Columbia Students Dancing With Pictures Of Candy Crowley: Funny, Or Just Awkward?

CNN’s Candy Crowley moderated last night’s presidential debate, and because she was, like, so totally sweet to President Obama, his alma mater wants to throw her a party (or something like that). Bonus points if you make it through the whole video:

Are Obama’s College Transcripts the Latest Birther Obsession?

In early May, a conservative blogger placed a $10,000 bounty on copies of Obama’s college transcripts from his years at Occidental, Columbia, and Harvard Law School. Ten thousand dollars! On Monday, the reward grew to $20,000:

We therefore offer in reward $10,000 $20,000 to anyone who provides the college transcripts of President Barack Obama. Occidental, Harvard, Columbia…any would represent more intellectual curiosity about the leader of the free world than the media has demonstrated since Obama won the Democrat primary.

This just a new form of birtherism, right? Actually, no. Not entirely. Read the rest of this entry »

But Who Is Jim Yong Kim?: An IvyGate History

Jim Yong Kim is now super-famous, after Barack Obama nominated the Dartmouth president to head the World Bank. But did you know that IvyGate has always had, well, kind of…a thing for Kim? Yes: we were into Kim BEFORE HE WAS COOL. And we don’t care who knows it! So here’s a brief history of the Ivy League’s favorite rapping spaceman, from the beginning:

Jim Yong Kim named Dartmouth’s 17th College President

God, Jill Abramson Must Feel So Weird Right Now

I suppose all the Columbia girls who complain about Barnard stealing all the Columbia men won’t be surprised: Barnard College, the women’s college across the street from Columbia announced last week that it would be ditching their previously announced commencement speaker, Jill Abramson Harvard ’76, the first woman to be Executive Editor of The New York Times, for someone named Barack Obama. Obama, a little-known, media-shy ’83 Columbia grad will finally get some recognition—he’ll be receiving Barnard’s Medal of Distinction!

Looks like he’s finally catching up with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who received the award when she spoke at Barnard’s commencement in 2009. Better still, Obama is the first African-American man to receive the award! Way to make strides for African-Americans in this world.

Check the comments on the Bwog post for a sampling of student reactions. As always, there’s plenty of indignation to go around: Columbia students miffed that Obama is speaking at Barnard and not Columbia, Barnard students asking why a male Columbia graduate was preferred to such a trailblazing woman as Jill Abramson, Barnard students who would have preferred Michelle Obama Princeton ’85 (yes, Princeton has tried—she’s never coming), misplaced Ron Paul supporters who must be lost and confused wandering around Manhattan: Read the rest of this entry »

Obama Aides Depart from White House, Head to Harvard Law

For a long time, I thought that the only way you could possibly get into Harvard Law School was by being an attractive blonde female with an admissions video featuring yourself wearing a skimpy bikini in a hot tub. Well, apparently there is another way to get accepted: Being BFFs with the President of the United States.

A handful of aides to President Barack Obama are trading their White House credentials for a life of textbooks and exams at their boss’s alma mater, Harvard Law School.

… … …

“We’re all proud of these remarkable young people who’ve worked late nights and long weekends over the last several years on the campaign and in the administration,” White House deputy press secretary Jamie Smith said. “Of course, the president isn’t at all disappointed that so many of them have chosen to pursue a bright future at his alma mater, and he is grateful for their dedicated service.”

While White House aides would not specify whether the president steered his aides toward Harvard or provided references for them, they do say Obama — the first black president of the Harvard Law Review — encouraged his aides’ academic development, checking in with them periodically on the application and admissions process.

Hmm … Every one of them got into Harvard Law? Yeah, I’m going to go ahead and assume that The Prez was able to pull a few strings. Talk about a legit letter of recommendation.

Then again, maybe Barry’s influence was not as big as I’m making it out to be. As The Donald said a few months ago, Obama was a “terrible student” who never should have been accepted to Harvard and Columbia in the first place.

“The Ivy League Made Barack Obama Elitist”: Two Columns, Fat and Thin

Are “Ivy League” hauteur and speech-patterns “cool” or “biased” and phonily “magnanimous”? Says some weirdo tea-party website run by a guy who will be Secretary of the Interior in the Palin-Beck administration:

Of course, very few people openly say they are “upper class”-at least not in public! Beyond money, attitudes can place one in a particular class in the public mind. Speaking of which, a finely tuned ear can detect in Obama’s speeches an Ivy League ring or bias. Consider again his magnanimous announcement that he has arrived to “rebuild the middle class.”

And we just reread Maureen Dowd’s column. (We usually don’t have the time to devote to the ritual three parsings required to begin to understand her.) It’s almost as though Maureen Dowd doesn’t REALLY think Barack Obama–Columbia and Harvard Law grad–is as cool as Scott Brown!

Whereas Obama had to force himself to nibble French fries and drink beer (instead of his organic Black Forest Berry Honest Tea) during the Pennsylvania primary, Brown truly loves diners, Pepsi, Waffle Houses and the unwashed masses.

Ooh, burn! The “Ivy League cool” president is effete. Maybe Maureen Dowd can start writing for NewsBlaze?

Gates Sends Flowers to 911 Caller, Inadvertently Tells Her To Stay In The Kitchen Where She Belongs

beer-1Leave it to CNN to find a new and charming tidbit on the single piece of summer Ivy League news everyone is already sick of hearing about. Apparently, Henry Louis Gates sent a bouquet of roses to neighbor Lucia Whalen as an “expression of gratitude” for calling the police, albeit mistakenly. Perhaps Gates felt a little guilty for all the racial and political brouhaha he and the Cambridge Police stirred up. After the incident, Whalen was accused by the media of racism and received multiple threats to her personal safety. At the recent press conference she held on July 29 to clarify what had been written in the police report, she defended herself by saying that she did not assume the two men in front of Gates’ house were black before she dialed 911. Cambridge Police spokesman Frank Pasquarello lauded Whalen for her actions:

She did the right thing. I applaud her. She did what we tell people to do: call when you see something suspicious. She did her civic duty.

Obama himself felt a little remorseful about the entire stupid situation, so–as everyone on and below Earth is aware of by now–he invited Gates and his arresting officer James Crowley to a beer summit at the White House last Thursday to promote better race relations. But perhaps in another poor act of judgment, Whalen remained the only person in the controversy uninvited to the reconciliation picnic hosted by the Commander-in-Chief. After being asked about the gathering, which has the entire American beer industry questioning its legitimacy/promoting their products, Whalen’s lawyer Wendy Murphy responded that her client “doesn’t like beer anyways.”

Is a gender discrimination debate heating up to add to the racial profiling fire?

Skip Gates’ Friend Says Unapologetic Cambridge Police “Acted Stupidly”

In the news conference that preempted Wipeout last night, the Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times asked President Obama about Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s arrest and what it says about race relations in America. Here is his response (in text here):

Two minutes later, fat people were getting knocked around by giant bouncy balls. Read the rest of this entry »

Ivy League Domination of Supreme Court Continues Next Week

200px-SoniaSotomayor2009robe7cropIt’s not surprising that 70 percent of Supreme Court Justices seated since 1950 attended some Ivy League institution—Harvard and Yale have the best law schools in the country. When George W. Bush had to make up for the embarrassment that was Harriet Miers, he went with Samuel Alito, a graduate of Princeton and a Yale Law alumnus. President Obama continued the trend by nominating Sonia Sotomayor last May, betting she would have an easy time getting confirmed with alma maters identical to Alito’s. Except for the fact that Alito was a conservative student who hated the liberal Princeton administration and Sotomayor was a liberal student who hated the conservative Princeton administration.

The hearings start next Monday and with endorsements from the ABA, the Fraternal Order of Police, and former FBI director Louis Freeh, Sotomayor is likely to be confirmed as the first Hispanic Justice and the 1,000,000th Ivy League graduate on the Court. This is despite drawing fire for supposedly claiming a “wise Latina” would make better decisions than a white man. Analysis of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s sympathy for Princeton grads after the jump.

Cornell Law Prof Upset with Our Condiment-Elitist President

w_jacobson_story1Harvard Law graduate and Cornell professor William Jacobson is a member of an exclusive club, as he is one of the few arch-conservatives to make a home in Ithaca. Before this week, Jacobson was one of the lesser-known members of this group that also consists of Ann Coulter and the blind guy staunchly opposed to anal sex, even though his initials spell “A.S.S.” But this week, Jacobson catapulted himself through the ranks of the Big Red Staters, thanks to his shocking expose of liberal media bias in MSNBC’s coverage of President Obama’s trip to an Arlington burger joint on Tuesday.

Mitchell even noted that Obama left a $5 tip in the tip jar. But she didn’t mention one arugula-like fact, and you couldn’t hear it on the MSNBC video because Andrea and her correspondent Kelly O’Donnel (they needed two people to cover this story) were talking so much.

NBC’s regular news reported Obama’s order as follows: “”I’m going to have a basic cheddar cheese burger, medium well, with mustard,” Obama said. “Do you have spicy mustard? I’ll take that.”

Actually, the quote was “you got a spicy mustard or something like that, or a Dijon mustard, something like that” (at 0.55 of the unedited video below without Mitchell’s talkover).

Obama ordered his burger with DIJON MUSTARD! Bet he had to seek John Kerry’s counsel on that.

If anyone knows elitism, it’s a Harvard Law-educated Cornell professor who worked for many years as a lawyer in Rhode Island.
