Pro-Lifers Protect Papaya Seeds’ Right to Life

Pro-Lifers Protect Papaya Seeds' Right to LifeA brief discontinuity in the IvyGate continuum: Around 2PM yesterday our post on papayagina abortion went dead, following Yale Daily News’ removal of an online article about a pro-choice event where, among other things, students simulated abortions on papayas. YDN’s explanation:

Out of concern for Rasha Khoury, whose quoted comments were being dangerously misinterpreted throughout the blogosphere, we removed the story yesterday afternoon from YaleDailyNews.com

Leave it to pro-lifers to get all dangerous with misinterpretation. (Does Francisco Nava have a blog?) Of course, YDN’s removal of the story is slightly futile, since copies of the original are already circulating right-wing blogs. We also have a feeling the Eric Rudolphs of the world aren’t the type to check facts. Khoury (Med ‘08) writes in today’s YDN that the papayabortions were “to practice and demystify, not trivialize, the procedure.”

Oddly, the trivializing forces of L’Affair Papaya are mostly on the other side. Dawn Eden, author of Thrill of the Chaste, hosted a contest to rewrite Yale’s anthem “for all those liberal arts students … about to learn how to suction a live baby out of the womb,” a clear homage to conservative Clinton Taylor’s “Taliban Boolah Boolah” fight song.

An excerpt from the winning ditty:

Easy college credit; all I need’s a knife.
That little papaya yolk sac will see no years of life.

“No years of life”? Papaya begins at pollination.

But fear not, Yale pro-choicers. In their sing-songing haste, the pro-lifers provided incontrovertible evidence of intellectual inferiority:

Scrape, scrape on down the wall
‘borting for Eli
Break up that Crimson child
Its life to deny

Um, hello? Crimson is Harvard, not Yale.

wait maureen, isn’t it the point? that yalies would want to abort a crimson fetus?

  2. Comments Mangino Says:

The Yale Daily News is biased.

  3. Comments get with the program Says:

The lyric in the original is “Break through that Crimson line.” It’s a parody, get it? Ha. Ha. Seriously, Maureen, just because this is a blog doesn’t mean you can’t do basic fact-checking.

  4. Comments Y 97, 05 Says:

Well, those lines are a reworking of lyrics from “Down the Field,” Yale’s fight song, and “Crimson” is in the original (”Break through that Crimson line/Their strength to defy”). So I think the point is either that Yalies would WANT to abort a Crimson fetus (as LGB says), or just that the fetus, being bloody, is crimson in a different sense.

  5. Comments penn10 Says:

I see Maureen’s letting her pro-choice bias color her posts.

  6. Comments The King of Spain Says:

Penn 10 is right, this is just awful… IvyGate’s position as a paper of record is disgraced by Maureen’s utter lack of objectivity in her sense of humor. Why are conservative students always complaining of a lack of objectivity on blogs? It’s OK when Malkin drops snark-bombs about political issues, but not if you make jokes about the uproar over this info session?

What’s dangerous is the kind of censorship exhibited by removing the article from their website. What kind of response is that to take down something which isn’t being interpreted the way you want it to be? That makes me SICK!

  8. Comments MANGINO @?*% Says:

did he just remove something else that offended him?

  9. Comments penny Says:

What’s most disgusting is The King of Spain’s attempt to discourage penn10 from speaking his/her mind. Of course, I am repulsed at myself because my comments may discourage The King of Spain from voicing his/her opinions about penn10.

  10. Comments seriously Says:

there’s no way the comments were being “dangerously misinterpreted.” Here’s what Rasha Khoury had to say about abortion:

“It’s not as scary as it seems. It’s just blood and mucus,” Khoury said, referring to the fetus remains in the device. She added, “You’ll be able to see arms and stuff, but still just miniscule.”

And, also, about meeting fellow abortionists:
“It’s fun because you meet people from all over the country who do them,” Khoury said. “It’s pretty inspiring.”

I know I’m inspired. The YDN should be ashamed of itself for this spinelessness.

I totally agree. Did anyone notice that there are no pro-life opinions? What ever happened to being unbiased and educated?

I think it’s a step forward for the pro-choice movement to stop hiding the details of the procedure. Although I would wager they never got to partial birth abortion in the “demonstration.” As for the crying and wailing and anticipating going to hell, the pangs of conscience ARE hell for the sinner.

  14. Comments @pro-life crazies Says:

FACT: According to the Guttmacher Institute (the most trusted source on abortion statistics by both pro-choice and pro-life camps) the rate of abortions is completely unaffected by the legality of abortion. HOWEVER, the number of deaths due to unsafe, back-alley abortions is greatly higher in countries where abortion is illegal or highly restricted.
I know these are inconvenient truths for you pro-lifers… but the facts are the facts, guys.
So, you feel bad for embryos who can’t feel or understand anything? Where’s your compassion for live, breathing, thinking, feeling women, 30,000 of whom die annually because they didn’t have access to safe abortion services?
If you’re really pro-life, you’ll allow them legal access to abortion services.

They aren’t inconvenient truths because the statements aren’t true. When you read the actual reports (not press releases about the reports) you will find all of those numbers are estimates. In other words they made the numbers up. They guessed. If they can’t prove those numbers surely you can’t.
