Frances Martel Planning Fascist Overthrow of Harvard UC

Frances Martel, our favorite Ivy League Republican sorta anti-Semite who is not Ann Coulter, is running for Harvard UC President. On Harvard Time interviewed her, and it turns out that she's endearingly weird in person.

But what's not so endearing is her fascistic, single-issue platform. If elected, the first thing Frances promises to do is "abolish parliamentary procedures." This way she can rule Harvard by fiat and make the Jews accept her Lord.

No, really. Some choice excerpts from the interview: "People in power are quivering"; "we'll blacklist them"; "I think I have the average perspective on the Jewish faith, which is 'It's nice.' I don't consider myself Jewish...I think it's wrong that they're doing what they're doing, and when you write persuasive pieces -- when you write opinion editorials -- you use all the weapons in your arsenal you can to convince people that you're right."

Believe it or not, Martel's running mate - who has not made a single campaign appearance - is Jewish.

Watch the video. Watch Frances' awkward campaign manager nod and pretend to answer questions as Leo Zimmerman. Watch Frances in her pantsuit answer an entire question in Spanish.

After the jump: some other candidates field questions from On Harvard Time. They're more normal, though, and therefore more boring.

    That couch is pretty terrible.

  2. Frances Says:

Hey, nice putting together pieces of what I said in a string so that it looks like I said something totally different. And it really bothers me that you would say I’m an anti-Semite when one of my grandfathers- the only one I know- is ethnically Jewish. I think my parents would be extremely disappointed if they knew that you were libeling me in such a way. The Martels converted sometime when we were kicked out of France and into Spain.

Oh, and Leo is Jewish. As is my Chief of Staff. As is the interviewer in this video, who is a friend and Housemate.

Also, Ivygate, sense of humor much? I think you should talk to me in person sometime before you judge my character.

  3. uhhhh.... Says:

That whole interview was completely 100% unprofessional. The questions had nothing to do with her campaign, other than extremely general ones like “What are you going to do?” That guy sure did do his research in an effort to paint her as an anti-Semite though! Lord knows the Harvard UC will have a lot of sway over the Darfur conflict and Israel’s policy regarding refugees.

  4. Emanuel Says:

Guys come on now. It’s Hanukkah, why can’t we all just get along. Also, On Harvard Time rocks.

  5. Stephen Says:

These are really funny, but that girl is crazy.

  6. steve-o Says:

“No one should deny another the help they begged on their knees for not even a century ago. No one should deny life and safety to anyone else when they themselves live only through the magnanimity of another. But I guess the result is to be expected when one lives through “eye for an eye” rather than “turn the other cheek”.”

“begged on their knees,” frances? really? is that an appropriate way to talk about the holocaust? and then to suggest that a state is run based on its ancient judeo theological background?

  7. p 09 Says:

So using “you use all the weapons in your arsenal you can to convince people that you’re right” includes claiming moral superiority for your faith by misconstruing the tenets of another faith? Doesn’t sound like a valid or ethical argument tactic to me. Sounds rather anti-Semite.

  8. h '10 @ uhhhh Says:

Maybe the interview was “100% unprofessional” because On Harvard Time is a FAKE news show, like the Daily Show…Just a thought.

  9. surlygrad Says:

    wow, those chicks are fugly

  10. B-Mo '10 Says:

Was that seriously Frances herself who commented above? Why would you engage like that?

    But since you did…
Waving a Jewish grandparent does not prevent you from being an anti-Semite, that’d be like me saying I’m not racist because I had an Asian roommate freshman year. Furthermore, was it necessary to drop the “my parents will sue you for libel” hint… really?

I’m not saying you’re an anti-Semite, or even spoiled… but your self-defense, as it were, is somewhat less than convincing.

  11. h '09 Says:

Actually, the best quote is: “I am serious…I’m not a clown!”

  12. y10 Says:

I think it’s reasonable to sue IvyGate for libel if they continue to call Frances Martel an antisemite. She has very wrongheaded political views, but it doesn’t make her a racist or a self-hater.

  13. Deez Nuts Says:

Is it libelous for me to call her a beeeotch!

  14. @ y '10 Says:

why don’t you pick up a book. such a libel suit wouldn’t work at all. it would be a total waste of time.

    kthxbi!

  15. "Leo Zimmermann" Says:

    Frances: I’m actually not Jewish.

Ivygate: I’m actually not Jewish. My last name has two n’s. And I have made campaign appearances, not only in my multiple (female) incarnations, but in my original body (I was chanting “down with Frances,” but I did appear at the scene of the campaign.)

World: Frances really is plotting a fascist overthrow; there’s really no argument there. I can’t say I’m happy about that, myself, but, you know, there it is.

  17. so Says:

Seriously, would anyone at Harvard actually vote for Frances??

  18. Robert Says:

How racists can you guys be? Come on, it’s 2007. Accept the fact that a young Hispanic woman is a human being. The South lost the War.

  19. @Frances Says:

“The Martels converted sometime when we were kicked out of France and into Spain.”

So you’re of Spanish heritage but not “white?” Does the same go for, like, Italians too?

First of all, Frances is not an anti-Semite. Did it ever occur to you that, as a journalist, she made an inflammatory statement in order to stress her point, which was that Israel denied entrance to people who were (and are) being massacred? Her indignation overpowered tact, which is something that happens all the time in journalism, yet she was attacked because she made this statement as a Conservative Republican and not as a liberal. Somehow it’s ok to lambaste her, as long as others can deride the politics and morals of Middle Americans, Christians, Conservatives, and Republicans (who, surprise!, don’t all represent the same group, but you can lump them all together anyway if it suits your purpose). Double standard much? (And I am a liberal, so don’t bother accusing me of… whatever.) Ok, what I just wrote may have gotten out of hand, but I’m not erasing it. And Frances wasn’t threatening to sue anyone for libel. Don’t put words in her mouth.

Second of all, to the idiots who said “those chicks are fugly” and Frances is a “beeeeotch” — I know you’re not used to functioning in the adult world, but at some point most people like you learn that they a.) are not funny, b.) are not important, and c.) are annoying to pretty much everyone else. It’s for your own good.

And lastly, Frances’ platform is a parody of previous UC platforms, a serious campaign only in that she is trying to represent people who are sick of the retarded (yes, I wrote retarded) way in which student government functions at Harvard. You may mock her and capitalize on any information you can find to demonize her, but the truth is that you are ignorant (or in denial) of most of the facts and guilty of the same kind of bias that you accuse Frances of displaying. Here’s an idea: try interviewing her (or, I don’t know, maybe someone who knows her?) before making untrue statements about her character and the nature of her campaign.

  22. Camille Says:

Obviously I didn’t mean to post that twice, before someone makes a stupid comment about it.

  23. TopHat Says:

Good thing you posted three time then!
(Just kidding. People take this stuff too seriously.)

  24. Columbia 08 Says:

Frances is concerned that those on the UC who are unfamiliar with the protocols of parliamentary procedure will be exploited by those who are familiar? For God’s sake, you go to Harvard. If you can’t understand parliamentary procedure you have no business going to such a school, let alone governing it.

  25. Malimbo Says:

    Columbia,

please stop crying about yar Harvard rejection letter! It’s over, you didn’t make it!!!
