We Knew There Was Something We Forgot
We are so, so sorry. A reader informs us we’ve been ignoring the youngest Ivy, that great staple of the Ithacan skyline: Cornell. Somehow we’ve ended up posting more about Dartmouth lately. Dartmouth! From an AIM convo last night:
[redacted]: why is there nothing about cornell? are we just not newsworthy?
ivygateblog: we are so sorry.
ivygateblog: we know.
ivygateblog: tell us filthy gossip!
[redacted]: i guess that’s the sad thing.
[redacted]: there isn’t any filthy gossip. we live at the library. we study.
We do our best to give every Ivy equal love and attention, honest. But it would really help us out if something, you know, happened there.
So here’s our challenge: Prove to us that things occur at Cornell. Check out how broad that is: Things. That occur. For the next week, we’ll lower our standards from rock-bottom to subterranean; deluge us with tips here, and we’ll make it back to Ithaca, even if it takes us as long as this dude.

I mean, seriously. Things happen at Cornell. Mostly tragic suicides. And hotel-managing. Can there be a more deceitful Ivy league claim than a degree from Cornell in Hotel-Concierge studies?

But you should probably know there is a lot that goes into being a concierge from food and wine knowledge to an understanding of business practices. I don’t think knowing your merlots from your cabernets would qualify you.

HarvardGrad…one would think that you’d be better informed. It must be difficult to look past your own ego. For the record Cornell is 100% private.
To quote wikipedia:
The Ag School, Hum Ec, ILR, and the Vet school are contract colleges. In exchange for partial funding from the state of New York to support their research and service mission in niche fields, residents of New York enrolled in the contract colleges pay reduced tuition. Despite some similarities, Cornell’s contract colleges are not public or state schools – they are private institutions that Cornell operates by contract with the state government.
What does that mean?
It means that while Harvard has around 36 undegraduate degree granting programs and departments Cornell has 85 and contrary to Aggie’s above post, Farm Studies isn’t one of them. Good luck studying Aerospace Engineering, or Ergonomics, or Food Science at Harvard. Oh yeah, you can’t.

Those are technicalities, CornellGrad. Semantics aside, Cornell is a well-documented state school. And thats fine, the nation needs good public schools and Cornell does its best to set a strong example. But you need not flip out over it…

to survive at cornell is a mission. it is an incredibly difficult school where grade inflation isnt prominent, it does not run on a trimester, and you can’t take every class pass/fail. the people who come out of cornell are hard working machines (for the most part, there are some lazy guys) but overall, to me they are the most impressive ivy. i’ve recruited people for my firm from every ivy league school and the cornell grads are always the hardest working and most dedicated kids. i didn’t even graduate from the school, but it is the first school I go to when I am recruiting and i will be sure to send my kid there in 10 years.

americans, truly pathetic, I surf the internet looking for life and here I find corpses that talk. The elite dinosaur education system guaranteed to make america extinct in less than 10 years and these are the idiots leading the way. This has got to be the lamest dialogue on the net put together by the most hard up group of youths in the world. No wonder the world is in such dire jeopardy with you murderous lying satanic pukes at the helm. Just what the world needs, some more american fascists ala the hearsts, dupont’s and rockefelloffs. Though, even nicer one HarvardGrad. Way to sport your intelligence (harvard grad my ass) on both Cornell and the Ivy League. If Cornell is a state school, so is MIT. Please, do your ‘harvard’ degree some justice and get informed on a very easy topic!
Also, if Cornell is a fringe ivy, what do you call the other football teams that finished behind Cornell in the standings? The Ivy League is a sports league, are you aware of that?
The Bizmarkie - please post these ‘well documented’ stats you mention. For what it’s worth, I currently work for one of the contract colleges - the dean of the school has indicated on numerous occasion that ALL of Cornell is private. The only difference comes in free cash from the state. Many people do confuse this though, usually an ego blocks the view. MIT does get the same type of funding as well, only in a much smaller amount.
