In Doctoral Thesis, Rogue Yale T.A. Blames “Satanic Freemasonry” for Catholic Sex Abuse Scandals

Posted By J.K. Trotter On January 27, 2012 @ 4:30 pm In Uncategorized | 10 Comments

Soon after IvyGate published the extraordinary email exchange between Margherita Viggiano, a Yale graduate student and teaching fellow in Alexander Nemerov’s art history lecture, and Edward Barnaby, the Graduate School dean who dismissed her, Viggiano posted (on the same blog we found her correspondence with Barnaby) what appears to be her entire, 53,000-word doctoral thesis, entitled “Shakespeare and Dante: Demonic Agency as Literary Theory”.

Much like the conspiracy-laden handout she distributed to undergraduates on Tuesday, Viggiano’s thesis faults the Freemasons—the fraternal organization and subject of several airport thrillers—for various corruptions of power. This time is a little different, though. Viggiano, a dramatically devout Catholic, forcefully argues that something called “Satanic Freemasonry” has infiltrated the Roman Catholic Church and contrives to ruin its reputation by arranging for priests to sexually abuse children.

It’s unclear whether Yale has yet accepted Viggiano’s thesis; we’ve emailed Yale’s Department of Comparative Literature for comment, and will update if we hear back.

Referring to an Italian woman who had been “demonically possessed” and the Church’s efforts to save her, Viggiano writes:

Her case is so exceptional, and the reasons of her continuing sufferings so disturbing, that one wonders why the Church hierarchy in Rome did not publicly intervene to denounce the phenomenon of Satanism in the Catholic Church. The crime of her cursing happened in Italy, performed by Italian fallen priests: therefore, it would have been logical for the Vatican, in Rome, to start a formal investigation into Satanism, looking for the causes that drive ordained priests to renegade God, renounce eternal life, and embrace the cult of Satan instead. If the hierarchy had done so, other scandalous events such as the repeated cases of pedophilia would have been better understood – and perhaps avoided – in light of the infiltration of Freemasonic elements in the Church, with an aim to discrediting the Church in the eyes of the world. As we will see in the section Freemasonry and Satanism, the abuse of children is completely in line with the ‘requirements’ of the church of Satan for its adepts. The defilement and, possibly, the ultimate sacrifice of an innocent – and children of course represent The Innocent, par excellence – is Satan’s attempt to ape the Passion of Jesus, to repeat it for his own glory and the damnation of the priests performing it. [clxxiv]

The endnote to which “[clxxiv]” refers is, well, you’ll have to see for yourself, after the jump. (Warning: it’s disturbing.) Also: a PDF file of Viggiano’s thesis, in case she deletes it.

[clxxiv] As we will see, Satanic Freemasonry re-enacts the Passion of our Lord quite literally, with the skinning and crucifixion of innocent victims: preferably children, who are figurae Christi. This practice has been in use since the Passion itself, two thousand years ago – but we will especially focus on a famous artistic representation of this torture dating from the Renaissance.

As for Catholic priests themselves, on the other hand:

Far from being victim souls, many members of the Church hierarchy are often unfaithful and morally corrupted, and a number of them have betrayed God to be part of Freemasonry, which is defined by Jesus as the church of Satan on earth, active within God’s Church itself and covered by a mask of hypocritical respectability.

We’re don’t know what on earth she’s talking about. Unfortunately. At the same time, both the length and complexity of her thesis suggest that those florid emails to Edward Barnaby, her students, and her peers weren’t the result of a momentary lack of judgement, but honest and deep conviction. We’re not sure whether that makes her behavior and her beliefs less, or more, disturbing.

Anyway: here’s a PDF file in the extremely likely case she deletes her thesis. Let us know if you find anything else noteworthy (or amusing).

For the third time, no one cares.

This is wholly crap. I am sickened by the wretched, demeaning attacks upon this woman, and hope that she triumphs through her courage. She is far from mentally ill, crazy, or any and all other pejoratives that have been assigned her for entertainment purposes. If you actually open your mind and consider that just possibly Margherita Viggiano is expressing something valuable, you will stop laughing and contemplate that possibly you, or your people, or your faith is likely next. Why wouldn’t it be? That the Roman Catholic Church has been infiltrated is not news to some, nor is it the whimsical stretch of conspiracy theorists; Malachi Martin, S.J. was anything but a crackpot, and he too was ridiculed, maligned, and scandalized for speaking out.

To Miss Viggiano:  good for you! Your fearless voice to seek and express truth is to be only admired and emulated.  Fear not, for you shall ultimately be vindicated; Yale University, for all is reach, power and corruption, can squelch neither your voice nor your faith. Carry on, and God bless you!

Do you also believe in the Trilateral Commission, the Illuminati, and little green men?

It may sound strange to American ears but theories of masonic infiltration of the Catholic Church are very common in Latin Europe. The US itself is partly a creation of masonic ideals and elightenment values so we are less inclined to see freemasonry as suspect. However, in traditionally Catholic countries freemasons from their onset undermined the Church and her teachings and aligned themselves with anti-clericalist elements. Thus, the Catholic suspicion of masons is well grounded.

as a former graduate student in christian religion, the quotes from her paper really suck.

i mean, obviously it is super taboo to suggest that the church molestation scandal is some perverse reenactment of the crucifixion, but that doesn’t even make any real sense.reading this, i’m leading more towards the conclusion that this graduate student is insane. most likely the satan that seems to be her obsession is a manifestation of the voices that she’s hearing in her head. sad stuff.

ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO SOLID EVIDENCE OF LITTLE GREEN MEN, THERE IS HARD EVIDENCE OF THE TRILATERAL COMMISSION, THE ILLUMANATI, AND THEIR SATANIC BLUEPRINT. YOU CAN REMAIN WILLFULLY IGNORANT AND BE LEAD TO THE SLAUGHTER, OR ACT OUT OF TRULY GOOD FAITH AND PREPARE YOURSELF AND OTHERS FOR WHAT IS COMING… A NEW WORLD ORDER BASED ON THE PHILOSOPHY OF THOSE WHO WORSHIP MOLOCH!

It’s a paper about how Shakespeare is a secret Catholic who uses his plays as an allegory about Catholic demonology. Accepting for the sake of argument that that’s not preposterous, she then rants in a paper which becomes more frenetically unhinged toward the end about Freemasonic/”Satanic” influences in the Catholic Church in a way that is not connected with her Shakespeare topic. It’s like she started to write a dissertation and by the end just said “fuck it” and used it as an excuse to ramble on about her novel theories about Freemasons and their fault in causing the Catholic Church to cover up child rape.

There’s no attribution in her paper for the proposition that Freemasons are Satanic or infiltrate the Vatican. She accepts such “facts” as a given. Who would she cite? The Leo Taxil hoax? The Protocols of the Elders of Zion? The Lost Symbol?

As an undergraduate student at Yale, I have met Margherita and spoken to her on several occasions.  She is a little wacky, yeah, but she is also sweet, helpful, and charming in her own way. I guess she’s got some weird ideas, but it makes her interesting.  Yale is a place to cultivate academic thought, discussion, and discovery.  You don’t have to agree with her ideas; no one is forcing you to read her thesis.  I’m tired of everyone attacking and trying to humiliate her when they’re probably the same people who couldn’t come up with a single creative or original thought if their lives depended on it.  Just lay off.

Thank you for speaking out in defense of both academic freedom and Margherita. While I abhor seeing her tagged as “a little wacky” or in possession of “weird ideas” your acknowledgement that she is nonetheless entitled to her beliefs and her academic expression of the same  is both correct and noble given the tone of the overall commentary regarding her plight. Shame on Yale as an institution for its treatment of Margherita Viggiano, and shame on those that judge her, her beliefs, or, her right to express them within an academic forum.

You are also correct that the small-minded bigots should “lay off” Margherita, as they too will someday find themselves very much in the minority on an issue, cause, or belief that is inherent within — such as their religion and/or ethnicity, for example, and suffer persecution with far greater impacts than mere name calling. That’s life and human history, regrettably and eventually for us all, though I surmise Margherita is far better prepared to weather this storm through her faith and principled beliefs than either the anonymous pundits of IvyGate or the corrupt and cowardly academic hierarchy of Yale.

Professor Alan Kors of Penn– where are you? Margherita Viggiano needs you!

Stay strong Margherita; you remain in our prayers.
