Dartmouth Administrators Side with Moose Over Keggy in Battle of Unofficial Mascots

When I read this Dartblog post about administrators throwing their weight behind the “Dartmoose” instead of the greatest unofficial mascot of all time, Keggy the Keg, I immediately came away with a bad taste in my Dart-mouth. (I’ll take “Terrible Puns” for $200, Alex!)

Yes, it’s true, I’m afraid. In the program from the Class of 2013 Sophomore Family Weekend, Dartmouth encourages families to take photos with the “unofficial school mascot, the Dartmoose,” in front of Baker Tower. There is no mention of Keggy the Keg. What an outrage!

Okay, we get it. Keggy is not exactly the fun-for-the-whole-family mascot that you want in your photo albums. But a moose isn’t much better. (Seriously, how was the Dartmoose endorsed by the student assembly in the first place? Was it those goddamn moose lobbyists?)

This latest news is just another slap-in-the-face to Keggy the Keg, who was keg-napped in 2008 (no joke) and then was given a somewhat frightening makeover in 2009.

Really, though … a moose? Could you imagine if this classic video had been filmed with the Dartmoose instead of Keggy? I shudder at the thought.

This post is idiotic. Anyone who has ever been to Hanover knows that the only true Dartmouth symbol is the Indian! Wah Hoo Wah!

what else is there to do in Dartmouth but drink!

Wow…really? I hate that I go to school with people who still feel it is okay to turn other people into mascots…. Go back to the review offices and continue to be unrecognized by the college.

Idiot administration (and ____moose supporters everywhere). The only mascots, in order of acceptance, are:

    1. Keggy
    2. The Dartmouth Lumberjack
    3. The Indian

    Thank you.

I was the VP of Student Life back in ’07 and started the push to get the school to officially recognize a suitable mascot in order to take pressure off the usage of the native image. A act that is fundamentally racist. Unfortunately, D13 and KD4eva’s opinions are not unique. The alumni didn’t support it and the administration didn’t want to take a stance. Many of my close friends and fraternity brothers shared their opinion. The movement seemed to slow down to an idle but I’m glad the issue is still alive and there are people willing to speak up for what they believe in.

D13, KD4eva – I’m sorry you feel this way. I remember wearing tshirts and hats freshman year from The Review with the native image. Luckily a liberal arts education served me well. I hope it does too for you. Take a NAS class –  you can even hang out in the back with some Heorots – and get informed, please.

Anyone disagreeing with this is encouraged to email me @ kennybk .com. It’s a conversation I’d love to have.
