Cornell Drug “Queenpin” Sentenced to 2.5 Years

Keri Blakinger, the 26-year-old Cornell senior who was arrested for possession of $150,000 worth of heroin back in December, was sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison, followed by two years of post-release supervision. The six ounces of heroin that she possessed at the time amounted to about 500 doses of the drug, police said.

According to an article by the Ithaca Journal, the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office described Blakinger as the “queenpin” in distributing heroin in and around Collegetown.

Hmm, queenpins and drug rings … Not exactly the Collegetown that I remember living in. Although perhaps I was too busy drunkenly grinding with girls at Dino’s and grabbing late-night fro-yo at Jason’s to notice all of the drug trafficking that was taking place all around me.

“Queenpin” does sound like it would be a great title for a Hollywood thriller, though. Hey Hollywood, if you’re listening, we’re basically putting this on a tee for you. The Ivy League prestige, drug busts, the shady, crime-ridden streets of Ithaca, New York (okay, maybe I’m stretching a bit with that last one, but whatever). Just add a couple of guys from The Sopranos and you’re well on your way to an Oscar nomination. Please make this happen for me, movie producers.

Keri was definitely not a queenpin. If you ever meet her, you would realize she was incredibly self-conscious, nervous, fidgety, and paranoid – and this was exactly why she got caught standing outside a hotel, fidgeting everytime any car went by and acting weird. Any person “in-charge” (aka Queenpin) is not going to be standing outside like that, even on drugs. If anything, she was a student, who got into drugs, fell on hard times, and became a small time dealer to support herself (and her habit) – who was most likely forced to carry that stuff against her will. She wrote occasionally for the Cornell Daily Sun and spent most of her time trying to go back to school or write for the paper as she was interested in being a journalist. This is the problem, if the DA office thinks she was a “queenpin” they are f-ing morons. She will probably be in trouble when she is released with whomever gave her that crap to hold or handover. Anyway – it is great idea for a movie! If you look around Ithaca (although not as bad as New Haven) there are some interesting characters, some fun, some shady, some both. Cornell and all the IVY’s aren’t always easy (as evidenced by the new “fences” on all the bridges in Ithaca) – and how it might be easy for someone coming from a broken home, with no money, with physical distress (which led to her drug dependence) and no family support, (and not enough real friends to support her through an abusive boyfriend)… to put themselves through college at Cornell… Think of all the crap that happens here and at our schools… that gets brushed under the rug. Sometimes things get to extremes, obviously. Keri is different than most of us in IVY leagues (besides having no means, she is a bit odd), and that probably only compounded the stress.. and made it even more difficult for her to normalize to a life of a typical student. So for all you IVY leaguers who drink or take drugs, and came from an Ok home, or have some money, or have a bunch of good supportive “friends” – this person was trying to make it and fell, pretty hard – without any of that. I’m glad they caught her, I hope she makes it.

Incidentally, in a town where two summers ago I sat on a sorority annex porch on College ave playing beer pong, while across the street a sedan pulled up with three guys, who got out of the car and one guy loaded what looked like white bricks wrapped in saranwrap into a duffle bag and went in and out of the house three times while the other guys kept watch. then after the girls called the police, they came by, nobody answered the door, so the cops left. and a few days later all the dudes all left – seemingly with no other issues from the police – no reports from IPD anyway. certainly not in the paper or on their website – even Keri’s bust came from a call from the hotel manager – and then they didn’t even have to ask her anything because she just handed them the stuff. Thats not a queenpin. Ridiculous. Anyone else hear about anyone getting busted? Know a drug dealer? How weird does that seem in a small IVY town – I seem to know a few and am amazed they are not getting busted more often. Maybe IPD is waiting for something.
