Lose an Arm and a Leg with Meg

As summer is ending, the only thing most of us can do is put our hands in empty pockets and gripe about our lives as slaves interns. While most of us were forced to supplicate to depths Odysseus  could never fathom for petty stipends for travel, one lucky d-bag is being compensated pretty well for what I am sure must be very “challenging” work.  Ladies and Gentleman, meet Brandon P. Watson, nephew of Chevron’s CEO John S. Watson. While sporting his gelled hair at parties in Atherton, Woodside, or Menlo Park, California with hopes to become the Posh Spice of Jersey Shore (he is the one on the far right), Brandon spends the daylight hours of his gap year making bank with his work for Meg Whitman, the Republican candidate for California governor. According to Brandon’s linked-in account, his official title is Staff Assistant. What are the perplexing responsibilities to the ambiguous title of staff assistant?

According to this websiteStaff Assistant Brandon Watson mans the reception area of the campaign headquarters of Republican gubernatorial Meg Whitman, located in Cupertiono, California.  Just for answering the phone, Brandon received $8,478.20 as his salary and travel compensation for a period of four months.  All the recent expenditures, that are available to the public, for Brandon are listed below:

Meg Whitman, as we have watched you ever so-conveniently bequeath $ 30 million to Princeton before your son  applied, secure a job for Griff through the help of your contributors, and now pay a kid with only a high-school diploma $2,750 a month, what can we possibly expect from you as governor if you are elected? I hope throwing money at anything and everyone is not part of your plan for job creation; even you cannot afford to spoil the 12.2% of unemployed Californians as you did this kid.

Seems like he's getting paid something like $15 an hour. Sure, that's on the high side… but is it really worthy of an article?

I've enjoyed your bashing of Whitman's kids (who seem like giant brats) but this seems a bit pointless.

  • Anon

It's mainly not worth an article because he goes to U Chicago.

  • anon

yeah thats probably a little less than 15 bucks an hour considering weekend work as well?

  • Evan

What point is this article trying to make? This kid works over 80 hours a week every week, and I'm sure he should be paid more!

  • Slamminsamoccum

Very small beer indeed. Now, get back to business and give us more about the evil incarnations of Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Griff and his similarly douchebagish frere). That would be interesting.

  • Jacob Reitan

Strange article. Don't begrudge someone their $15 an hour. This is coming from a gay liberal who doesn't want Meg to win.

  • Patrick Hipps

I still think it is fair to call out considering his job responsibilities and role in the campaign. Based on this math, I'm gonna call Obama and ask for the 40k he owes me for organizing on his campaign for some 18 months. Not bitter, the kid looks a tool too, kind of not fitting for UofC…then again he is a gap year student so he got into college before his Uncle was the CEO of Chevron, someone didn't have enough pull to actually be considered worthy of this blog.

  • Vince

Why list the travel compensation? That's not wages.

  • Neo

If you truly believe this kid is working over 80 hours per week, then he isn't being compensated fairly, as his salary wouldn't meet the minimum wage requirements. Believe me, as a “Staff Assistant” this kid isn't even working 40 hours per week.

    • liachickadee

Clearly you, as well as this author, have never worked on a political campaign. How ignorant can you be? Try working on a campaign some time, it isn’t as easy as you may think. It is extremely stressful and this kid is putting in at least 30-40 hours a week to be in that position. And it requires a lot more than simply “answering phones”.

  • Phil

What kind of BS are you printing. Your facts arent even correct. maybe you should invesigate before printing. Its articles like these that make you liberals feel good about yourself.

  • dcgrrl

It's interesting that this seems so normal and uneventful to so many. There are people with college degrees who's skill level rise way above answering phones who can't get a job making this kind of money in this economy. It also matters very much how he got the job. I would like to know more about that.

  • Lee

He's 18…I have friends twice that age unable to make that much…perspective, folks…

  • WorkingClass

This kid is getting paid $15/hour to answer phones. Most political campaigns use volunteers for that. Meg isn't getting volunteers or donations to her campaign, so she has to pay people to work for her, with her own millions. This is probably Meg's idea of what poor people earn in entry level jobs. People like me, with a college education and 35 years of work experience, are barely making what this kid is getting. I agree, this is one of the most expensive places to live. But this kid can live at home rent free, get his meals handed to him, and have spending money to party with on top of it. If I didn't have any self respect, I'd sell myself to Meg for those kinds of privileges too!

  • Ivy Gate Reader

This is trash. It's mean. And it's not even funny.

  • Ian J Watson

Funniest part… he isn't related to John S. Watson. At all.

  • YosemiteSam1

Um campaigns don't pay that much so this is an issue….seems like we got a lot of Republicans here blindly defending stupidity….If you are not familiar with campaign work I can tell you that this pay grade is way out of the ball park…..Field Directors for the Presidential campaign barely made that

  • WillMC

Wow, weird! I've seen this guy at the SF Four Seasons with his uncle!

This guy is definitely a preppy, d-bag tool!

  • princetonbaby

I wonder how much money John Watson had to donate to the Meg Whitman campaign to score his nephew a spot on the red carpet….

  • priiinnnnce

I just called Meg Whitman's office, and the guy is really nice…LOL

I doubt Meg Whitman would put a douche bag, at the front answering her phones.

  • David Lee

    dayuummmm…whaddachamp!

  • giannntsssrule

I see this guy at the Menlo, Ca Safeway on a daily basis. LMAO!

    Poorly written article, btw.

  • Ritiqua

I take it back. I don't want you to fail. I don't want anyone I fail. I want bad journalism to fail.

  • Ian J Watson

does anyone even know who john s. watson btw?

  • jessica kim

i bet his uncle is how he got into the University of Chicago too.

    John Watson went there too.

  • anon

Democratic campaigns don't pay this much for people doing actual campaign work. Dems pay between minimum wage and around $12 an hour for grunts, and for people doing managerial work in excess of 40 a week it's not much more than twice that, with no bennies or OT.

  • anonymous

Tru knowledge brother. Jerry Brown's workers aren't going to make anything close to what this receptionist is making. Well, except the consultants. They will get more than $15 an hour.

  • Yadavyourself

the kid looks like a little midget or an oompa loompa

  • maddison

    he's cute + wealthy

  • Yadavyourself

    you sound his mom

  • sophie.yale

    hotttiee :]

  • williampatter

    This story is sad.

I mean I've met this dude at a party in Woodside before, definitely a good guy.

  • Talespin

who cares, he is john watson's nephew.
    he deserves the finest things.
even his entry into the University of Chicago.

  • khartman

University of Chicago douche, not many of those…

  • tobyRN

Meg plans on firing 40,000 employees while she pays an 18 year old 40,000 dollars a year, really?

  • Adam

You would have to be the nephew of a billionaire to get this post!

  • dwilliams

    spoiled white kid

  • jberk

why is this article so important? So what, he is related to john watson, I have seen the Watson family many times at alumni events at UChicago, but why does it matter if he is making 17 dollars an hour. That is average for practically anyone.

  • jenn lopez

Watson dynasty in the news again.

Hope Brandon isn't expecting to take over Chevron after this article.

  • Pb299

it isn't a permanent job, and any 36 year old unable to find a job paying 15 dollars an hour must have done nothing with their life. do you really think 15 dollars an hour is much? and take into account that this is 15 dollars an hour in that area, which is very expensive to live in

  • anonymous

another rich kid on the peninsula

  • crrryfish

Brandon could never do this on his own. His legacy is the only thing he has going for him

  • Timothy Wild

    I love this article.

    Meg Whitman you SUCK!

  • Daniel

    This article is entertaining

  • George L

    POSH SPICE OF JERSEY SHORES!!!!!!
    BEST LINE EVERRRR!

  • Angelo

Is this her idea of austerity????? Maybe for everyone else perhaps. She's not exactly right but I wouldn't call her a Ding Dong. Ding Dongs leave a pleasant taste in my mouth. She scares the hell out of me. Next she will be tring to buy a senator chair and then probably a money shot at the presidency. Shiver and shake

  • Henry

    touche

  • HenryCox

Yale made a big deal when this guy flew out to visit last year.
I saw President Levin eating with him in the dining hall at Berkeley College.

Guess legacies at the University of Chicago are too good to pass up, but a free pass to yale….

  • anonymous

This pay is normal for anyone attending an ivy league type school.

  • WWJD

    Oil companies control the world.

  • Kristie Dang
