BREAKING: Kappa Sigma @ Cornell Losing its Charter this Year

LOL, ZOMG, ROFLMAO, et al! We frat-hating, irony-worshipping hipsters here at IvyGate HQ totez hate Greek Life SO much: even more than fun, hazing, and sincerity! OBVI we’re only reporting this def-insignificant news because of our wicked personal vendettaz and insecuritiez.

That said, humor us, because we have a slight inkling that quite a few normal, down-to-earth, fun-loving Cornellians are going to be sad to hear that not one, but two of their frats may soon be shut down. In the wake of our recent announcement of embattled Pike’s closure, we now have exclusive news from a source close to the situation that the Alpha-Kappa chapter of Kappa Sigma (that’s more of a mouthful than dogfood and tabasco!) will be losing its charter this year. According to our tipster,

The national organization has decided to revoke the chapter’s charter after hospitalization incidents during rush week, inappropriate pictures surfaced on Facebook, and a rogue fog machine set of a fire alarm at a pledge party.

This sort of sucks: especially since it’s not ADPhi. Jokes. In all seriousness, the besieged frats at Cornell, for all their foibles, have been on the receiving end of a disproportionate amount of administration crackdown, especially since — as a frat tipster notes — “on occasion, we do good things.”

Ithaca is cold and gloomy; frats are warm and, at their best, booze and camaraderie filled. When they do crazy things, we here at IvyGate write about them; but when they get shut down, we take no joy in Cornell’s loss. Godspeed noble bros; godspeed.

As someone in the Greek system at Cornell, I’m actually kind of sad to see this chapter go. Kappa Sig has never done any wrong to anyone as far as I’m concerned, nor has the reputation or bad blood to warrant any kind of retribution against them. To know that they will be kicked off campus for those offenses as opposed to Alpha Delt which will continue to stay on campus despite their hardcore hazing and humiliation towards new members (proven) and continued illegal drug use (unproven) sickens me, as I’m sure sickens other members of the Cornell community, both Greek and non-Greek. There is clearly inequality in the Greek system here, and while I am happy to leave it after graduation, something must be done.

Just for clarification, the description that the ‘tipster’ left is a little vague and makes the offenses seem worse than they were. From what I’ve heard, someone drank to much while on medication at a party there last year during rush week, so the brothers took them to the hospital (which was in accordance with Cornell’s policies, so there were no repercussions from the university). The pictures they are referring to were just of people holding drinks at their formal, which isn’t far from any other underage drinking that goes on at every ivy and isn’t anything crazy. I guess the fog machine part speaks for itself. Anyway, it’s sad to see these guys go, like thatcornellguy said, their infractions make them seem like a pretty harmless house compared to a lot of others that are getting into almost no trouble at all.

Speaking of frat de-chartering, two of Brown’s are rumored to be losing their charters: Thete (ΘΔΧ, football) and DPhi (old-money, lacrosse).

It’s one of those rumors that’s unconfirmed but commonly accepted to be true. Perhaps you intrepid muckrakers could rake it up.

This isn’t cornell pulling them though, its their nationals, who are a lot stricter than IFC ever is. Sorry to see you go Kappa Sig, you really did nothing to deserve it.

What bad PR. Looks like Cornell can’t keep their greek system under control. If there are 3 houses all in one year that are doing things they shouldn’t be (hazing, sending kids to the hospital, and having parties that piss off their nationals), then that should say something about Cornell’s ability to maintain a greek system. I wouldn’t be surprised if other nationals started to pull chapters out of Cornell just to avoid the liability.

Actually, Cornell has a very well regulated Greek system. The fact that frats have been facing serious repercussions by the IFC is evidence of this. I’m not in a frat, I don’t go to them, and to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of them, but the justifications for shutting down Kappa Sigma seem like a bit of a stretch. Then again, I’m not sure in what respects national and IFC policy differ.

Also, if you think Cornell is alone in this, you’re sorely mistaken. The latest account of Princeton fraternities seems far worse than anything I’ve heard of here, Dartmouth has a notoriously deregulated system, and I’m sure that plenty of organizations at Harvard commit similar offenses.

At least, they would… if they could throw a decent party =p

Excuse me Harvard 12′, but maybe if you’d actually taken the time to read the article before starting a long life of looking down your nose at everyone that hasn’t graced your halls, you’d know that this chapter did nothing to deserve what’s happened to it. Hazing was never mentioned, the person who was sent to the hospital did NOT go during rush week, it was well after (I know this much better than you, trust me.) and it was because they were on medication. The frat took them to the hospital right away. These “inappropriate pictures” (check your sources, Ivygate, seriously) were nothing more than a beer bottle or two. Maybe if you people actually take frats one at a time rather than making the same generalizing stereotypes you blame them for, you could form legitimate opinions.

The person who went to the hospital was a girl with anemia, NOT A PLEDGE. She was forced to drink nothing and was taking care of immediately.

Kappa sigma truly does not deserve this they have done nothing in the scope of what other frats do every weekend. And as said before it is truly sad to see this chapter go. As a participant in the freshman 14 (an athletic competition and fundraiser run by kappa sigma involving all 3500 freshmen) at the start of the year, I feel for the class of 2014 that will not get to experience this great event. It is also important that we note how exaggerated these stories get, rly from what i have heard they have done nothing that gets close to constituting this.

rly Kappa sig was not a stereotypical frat and did not have a bad reputation or known for outrageous partying or hazing. it is sad to see a truly get brotherhood go, from my point of view they were the frat that every college would want. They should not even be compaired to frats like ADphi or pike. I feel for the brothers and hope the refound asap

First of all maybe you should research what you’re talking about. ADPhi? Try Alpha Delt. But most importantly, you revel in the misfortunes of others beyond belief, and then wonder why nobody respects your writing. Maybe if you weren’t so biased against greek life and actually saw what it has to offer, you would get more respect.

Their nationals is so strict that they do not even allow drinking (by anyone) in the Chapter house. Obviously this means that every time they throw a party, they’re at risk, which makes it a little unreasonable. Every party I went to while I was there, there was paid security at the doors and sober monitors keeping an eye on things. This was a good frat, it’s a shame to see it go.

This sucks! Kappa Sig rocked that campus. They were one of the truly diverse organizations at Cornell and did a lot of philanthropy on campus (all you can eat pizza buffet to raise money for Michael J. Fox foundation was the best). They’ll be back, better than ever, in a couple years.

Read the Daily Sun Article. The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs effed them over when they turned themselves in after the fire alarm. The OFSA apparently promised them they wouldn’t be reported to nationals unless there was a judicial hearing, and then turned around and reported them behind their backs. Poor form.

Honestly, it’s kind of ridiculous that whenever there’s so much hazing, drug dealing, and discrimination going in most other fraternities, this house gets booted off campus for having a few beers when they weren’t supposed to. Seriously Cornell?

    in reply to CU:

I read the Sun article, but you can’t just do something so blatantly wrong and expect to be able to negotiate a promise with someone at the OFSA office that none of the deans will tell your nationals about your infraction, especially when you’re already in trouble. They were promised by one person in the office, who’s an assistant dean, and were told on by the actual dean of students. It doesn’t come as a shocker to me at all that this could happen. The fact is, they apparently had been reprimanded twice before, and should have known better.

    @Cornell ’11:

True, it was the assistant dean that promised them amnesty and the head dean that tattled on them. So I guess the lessons for all other frats is never trust anything anyone but the head dean says?

Also, it’s true they were breaking the rules. But then again, every frat party that serves to underage students is doing something “blatantly wrong.” The bottom line is they were apparently being responsible by having a closed party, keeping it under control, and then reporting themselves after the fire alarm got set off by the smoke alarm. I think the house deserved more sanctions from Cornell maybe, but definitely not to get reported to their nationals, which the dean surely knew would be a death blow to the chapter considering how strict the national organization is.

It wasn’t because a dean or anyone tattled to Kappa Sig HQ. Kappa Sig cracks down hard on anything and everything. Kappa Sig isn’t interested in being at Ivy League and top colleges like some fraternities. They haven’t made any significant attempt to get back D’mouth or Harvard, and the only remaining Ivy is Penn. I doubt they are really big on academically competitive schools or schools at all, particularly in the North and Midwest.

They cut chapters and then have an expensive process to return. They bring in tons of colonies (more than any fraternity) and they push for numbers really hard. If they don’t get the mega numbers they want, they kick chapters out or kill colonies. (That happens more than any fraternity.) There is a lot of internal discord because of this. They came down on the mother chapter at University of Virginia just last week but backed down when they threatened to cut off access to the 46 East Lawn at UVA (the place where the fraternity was founded). Kappa Sig left the NIFC because they didn’t want to go by the basic standards and they were stealing colonies. Realistically every national office has to be concerned with with growth, money and insurance costs but they are pretty ruthless.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kappa Sig at Cornell and other chapters nationwide just break off and re-affiliate which is not an option for NIFC but Kappa Sig isn’t a NIFC fraternity. Or maybe Cornell Alpha Kappa goes indy and sees who else want to join up. Somebody has to take the lead in doing . The boys in Alpha Kappa have always been a smart, responsible and ambitious bunch, so it may be time to move on. No one needs to pay some money grubbing idiots just to be screwed at the first opportunity.
