HuffPost: Harvard is Not Fun

Well, that’s settled... Our friends over at HuffPost College just released a list of America’s Top Ten “Anti-Party” Schools. Harvard took the number four spot, the only Ivy to grace the list. Their reasoning:

Harvard students must clear proposed parties with school administrators. The school does not recognize fraternities and sororities, and party rules are strictly enforced by Cambridge police — the fun must end by 2 a.m, and once that happens, there’s always homework to be done.

How surprising, given Harvard’s phenomenal history of successful parties! The anti-fun designation probably won’t do much to hurt Harvard’s matriculation rate; only its general coolness and community well-being. So no problem!

  • Ivy League Blog?

Won’t do much to hurt it’s general coolness? IT’S? Really?

Princeton and Brown are on it as well- Brown taking number one.

And I thought IvyGate was bad. That Huffington Post article is completely false and uses absolutely no measurable criteria to make those rankings. It is completely arbitrary and misinformed. I guess it makes sense that Alex Klein would link to an poorly written, nonsensical article in one of his posts.

The article is misinformed about Harvard because:
    1. Harvard students having to clear parties with administrators means they just have to register it with their house, but the admins never say no. And this means any dorm room can have a party as long as they register, which is better than all the schools that never allow parties in dorm rooms. And these parties can’t get shut down by tutors/RAs. So actually, this policy is extremely liberal.

    2. Harvard doesn’t recognize frats, but there are several fraternities and sororities and final clubs anyway and it makes no difference that they aren’t recognized. They still have a lot of parties.

    3. NOTHING is ever enforced by Cambridge Police. They aren’t allowed to come on campus. Everything on campus is HUPD’s jurisdiction and HUPD doesn’t enforce anything.

    4. Parties are technically supposed to end by 2 am, but unless you have a really strict tutor, they never do.

So pretty much everything the article said about Harvard is a complete joke. NOTE TO THE WORLD: Stop trying to bring Harvard down just because it’s on the top. Harvard is a great place to party, as evidenced by the people who come from schools all over Boston to party here.

    So what you’re saying is:
    1. Harvard students DO have to register parties.
    2. Harvard DOESN’T recognize frats.
    3. When the HuffPo said Cambridge police, they meant HUPD.
    4. There IS a rule that ends all parties at 2am.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

“Harvard is a great place to party, as evidenced by the people who come from schools all over Boston to party here.”

If you count MIT as “all over Boston” then you’re right. I’m sure people from awesome party schools like BC totally head right to Harvard for the ragers there. Hell, Tufts has more fun things to do on a weekend.

You could at least play the same (semi-viable) card that Columbia students do: You don’t have huge on-campus parties because there is a lot going on in that huge metropolis you’re next-to/in.

I don’t think going out to bars rather than frat houses is a bad thing. It’s a relief to go places not packed with students from the same school, especially when most Ivy Leaguers are insufferable, myself included.

Yes, except that *none of it matters at all*. Maybe you missed that part of his post.

    1. No we do not have to register parties with our houses. You only register if you want to be immune to noise complaints during the weekday and that only truly matters for freshman housing anyways.
    2. People from all over do come to Harvard.MIt people don’t because they have their own party scene. Girls from all over Boston seriously come here looking for sugar daddies/rich boyfriends
    3. HUPD is so chill. You have no idea
    4. Harvard has no frats(besides the minor 3). Who cares, we have finals clubs which are the same thing without regulation by the university, hence no recognition.
    5. Registered parties end at 2 a.m. but by 2 a.m you’ve probably taken a girl home.

Know the school before you talk about it.
