UPDATE: Dartmouthians Meet With Town Selectmen, Prepare to Hanoverize Themselves
More on the great Dartmouth alcohol crackdown front… As we write, pissed off and incredibly sober undergrads are flocking to the Hanover Municipal Building, petitioning town leaders to keep the pesky police in check, and out of their frat-houses. To plan the uprising, The GLC, Coed Council, IFC, and Panhell blitzed the entire campus, while the Class of 2013 President targeted freshmen directly. Their trump card? Have the student body register as Hanover residents, in order to apply political pressure. This little town may soon find itself taken over from within; a coup de’booze, as it were. Read both emails–and plot your very own town takeover–after the jump. The revolution will not be televised.
To the Undergraduate Student Body,
We would like to update you on the Greek response to Hanover Police’s new alcohol policy.
We will be holding a **CAMPUS MEETING** at **6:45 TOMORROW, TOP OF THE HOP.**During this pre-meeting we will discuss our plan for the Select Board meeting and update you on Greek organizations’ new policies. The Hanover Select Board is the only town organization that has jurisdiction over Hanover Police, and we will make the case for modifying or reversing Hanover Police’s new policy. We will go to the Select Board meeting directly from this event.
If you plan to attend the Select Board meeting, we ask that you please *be respectful.* The Select Board was unaware of Hanover Police’s new policy before it was announced, but they do have the authority to change it. We have no reason to be angry at them and want them to be our ally as we move forward.
Greek organizations will continue to follow the guidelines outlined in our blitz to campus from Friday.
Thank you,
GLC, Coed Council, IFC, and Panhell
Dear fellow members of the Class of 2013,
Hopefully you are aware by now of Hanover Police’s new alcohol policy, targeted at Dartmouth’s Greek houses. If successfully implemented, this policy will unfortunately hurt our class the most over the next few months. You should know that the 2013 Class Council is working with Greek organizations on campus to voice the interest of the freshmen class and develop an appropriate response to the problem.
The first way for you to get involved is through the local political system. Tomorrow, the Hanover Board of Selectmen is meeting at 7:30 PM in the Municipal Building on Main Street. I encourage all of you to attend this public meeting and respectfully voice your concerns. The first part of every open board meeting is dedicated to public comment, as seen on their agenda (http://www.hanovernh.org/stories/storyReader$703). Furthermore, Greek leaders are holding a meeting before the Board of Selectmen meeting at 6:45 PM in the Top of the Hop. I ask that you try your best to attend so that you are fully informed before the board meeting.
In addition to attending these meetings, I encourage you to register in the next few days as a Hanover resident. You can visit the Municipal Building to do this. If a large number of Dartmouth students register and gain voting power, students’ voices will not be ignored by the elected Hanover Selectmen, who have the ability to change the new alcohol policy.
Do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions.
Sincerely,
Suril Kantaria
2013 Class President

Would love to see Keggy, Esq. sit in the front row at this meeting.

Suril needs to get off his high horse, noone gives a shit what he has to say.
February 9th, 2010 at 12:26 am
Well said, suril.

Vincent you have nothing to support your comment. Suril has been doing a phenomenal job leading our class at Dartmouth. I’ve never seen such a great leader who really gets things done and communicates so well with his constituents. So if you make a comment like that you should have something to back it. Do you even go to Dartmouth? If you did, you’d know that 13s are worried about their future and it is Suril’s job to support their interests in this whole fiasco. I doubt you can do a better job than Suril is doing.
February 9th, 2010 at 12:44 am
Vincent you are an ass. Suril is a great class prez and has been working really hard for the class. If you are going to say something like that at least have evidence. I had no idea what was going on before reading Suril’s blitz. And I’m glad I got it because now I’m going to register as a Hanover register and join the movement. No one gives a shit about what you have to say.

I agree with both REVincent and Sam

I agree with both Reilly and Suril above

I’m Suril Kantaria and I approve the messages by REVincent, Sam, and Suril #3.

Doubt any of these are the real Suril given I was just with him and he didn’t even know about this IvyGate post until I showed it to him. I’m sure people enjoy claiming to be him though! But he is a great kid and an awesome leader and I don’t think he deserves Vincent’s comment. Keep up the good work, bro.

Good morning. In less than an hour, [ALCOHOLICS] from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest [BLACKOUT TRAIN] in the history of mankind. “Mankind.” That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it’s fate that today is the Fourth of [FEBRUARY], and you will once again be fighting for our freedom… Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of [FEBRUARY] will no longer be known as an [GREEK] holiday, but as the day [DARTMOUTH] declared in one voice: “We will not go quietly into the night!” We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

There’s no ‘u’ in Dartmothian.
February 9th, 2010 at 7:32 pm
Hm, blackmailing the locals? That will go over well!
Remember Class of 2013, your only defense here is, “but we REALLY want to drink!” Best of luck!
February 10th, 2010 at 12:42 am
’13s…shut up, you’re still the (second) worst class ever (behind the ’11s)
February 10th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
Get over yourself, 12s.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:29 pm
“But we really want to drink” is not the core issue here.
First, the kind of tactics that the police are proposing to use (to squelch drinking) are the types of tactics typically used to break up drug rings and gangs. It’s preposterous to adapt those tactics for the ends that the police seek.
Second, at issue is the social fabric of campus. As the Dartmouth President noted in the fall, the Dartmouth Greek system differs from most other Greek systems by holding open parties that are free to everyone. Nearly every party is an open party and the doors are open to all students, from freshmen to unaffiliated seniors. The police chief’s plan would do nothing less than destroy that system. It would tear apart the open and welcoming social life that has been in place at Dartmouth for more than 100 years.
Third, this is a sharp reversal of police policy. In May 2009, the police chief gave an interview the Dartmouth’s Rockefeller Center for Public Policy in which he described the relationship between town police and the private campus security. Then , the Police Chief emphasized that except in cases when they are aware/reasonably believe of a crime “actually occurring” or when invited by campus security, they will stay out of
Fourth, this has a destructive impact on privacy rights. People expect that so long as they are engaging in lawful behavior, the police will not try to infiltrate into their private parties to spy on their conduct. Why aren’t the police targeting Hanover High School parties? If they’re truly interested in preventing violence and sexual assault, why aren’t they infiltrating parties of +21s? They’ve targeted undergrads.

D08: “People expect that so long as they are engaging in lawful behavior, the police will not try to infiltrate into their private parties to spy on their conduct.”
They are engaging in UNLAWFUL behavior! How hard is this to understand? They are serving alcohol to minors. That is against the law. That is why the police are interesting in stopping it.
