Yale Tabloid Releases Secret Society Rosters, No One Cares

Yale's Rumpus magazine recently published the full list of secret society inductees for 2009. These future-leaders-of-the-world hopefuls join a league of will-never-really-be-leaders-of-the-world Yale alums plus George W. Bush. Meanwhile, nobody outside of New Haven gives a shit after that Joshua Jackson movie showed how whack secret societies are anyways.

The lists may or may not be correct, but Google doesn't care. The only name we actually recognized immediately was Andrew Mangino, former Yale Daily News editor-in-chief who is now a Scroll and Key member, again. (Wonder if he applied...and too bad he's not a Boner...) Since he was on last year's list, this  seems confusing. Smells like journalistic integrity, nevertheless.

After the jump, the absurdly long list of tap-ees and the trailer to aforementioned Joshua Jackson movie. The list is really effing long. Do the Elis really need 32 secret societies? Do we have a little complex, Yale?

Correction: Kind commenters have let me know that Rumpus publishes the list of graduating members, so obvious that Mangino is on both. We still don't care.

  1. Y11 Says:

Seriously, Estes? Not that is hugely important to me, but Rumpus publishes the outgoing seniors, i.e. the kids that got tapped LAST year. That’s why Mangino’s “repeat” is so confounding to you. An ounce of research/checking your own archives could have helped.

  2. Y11 Says:

    *Not that this

  3. Harvard Says:

    where is st. a’s?
and is skull and bones as exclusive as it used to be? I thought it was supposed to be attractive wasps? why is it intrnational now?
Can someone explain to the non yalies

  4. y'10 Says:

@Harvard: rumpus only publishes the list for senior societies, st. a’s is a 3-year society that admits sophomores, so they (along with the other sophomore and junior societies) aren’t published. Also, bones split when they started admitting women. the all-male waspy line is now called Nine Ball. Skull & Bones decided to go for the ACTUAL future leaders of the world.

  5. senior yalie Says:

wow, this post is awful on a number of levels.

first, the picture is of the whiffenpoofs, a senior a capella group, not a society. it is true that they are tapped, but there is nothing secret about them.

secondly, you really shouldn’t mock mangino for being in scroll in key. it is every bit as prestigious as skull and bones, has way more money, and a way nicer tomb (a simple wikipedia search would have revealed this).

@Harvard: St. A’s is on the corner of college and wall streets. a casual passerby might mistake it for a corner of silliman college, but it is in fact a distinct building. as for skull and bones, it is not waspy at all. it’s pretty much for people who are the best at something and they draw from a diverse group of seniors. they actually put all their gala photos online so you can see that they are a nerdy group, not a bunch of stereotypical wasps.

  6. Y11 Says:

Nine Ball? Ha. Nine Ball, along with most of the other “societies” on that list, are invented and unlanded so Mike McLeod and Co. can feel important off the football field. WASPy? Hardly.

  7. 1Y2 Says:

I don’t have anything new to say, but to reiterate:

    WTFuck, check yo’ shit.

  8. y07 Says:

I would say that Keys is probably more respected on campus, since they get a more cohesive mix of smart people than Bones do.

  9. Harvard Says:

So, you join a senior club when you are a junior? (I’m assuming the leadership/tradition-teachers have to be older somehow, right?)

  10. LakeHMM Says:

Hah, I love how I’m only ever directed to this website when people point out how terribly done your articles are.

  11. y09 Says:

y07’s definitely correct. There’s a reason the Pundits pranked most of the junior class into thinking they were going to get tapped for Keys this year, rather than Bones. Keys has all the prestige without the icky Bush-y aftertaste.

  12. Anonymous Says:

the real list is out, fyi.

  13. y11 Says:

    this IS the real list.
the new list is of this year’s taps for bones, scroll, wolf’s and leviathan.

what the hell is so hard to understand about “societies ‘08-’09″?
it’s at the top of the damn Rumpus article.

  14. Lobster-Crab Says:

New Flash, Yale: The title is right. No one gives a shit. Stop freaking out about the article.

  15. @senior yalie Says:

yeah, it’s a picture of the whiffenpoofs, but that seems entirely appropriate, as most of those guys appear on the secret society list.

  16. y09 Says:

Scroll & Key = prestige? Sure. Four or five Keysmen a year are legitimate virtuosos and geniuses. The rest are insufferable, self-important douchebags.

  17. @ y09 Says:

truth. s&k seems to be increasingly filled with hipsters as does the pundits. this year’s list looks even more insufferable.

  18. yale-er Says:

each society has its own flavor. keys tends to be a bit more white, academic, and centered around finance, for example (i.e. lots of future investment bankers and consultants). you won’t understand societies and their taps unless you know that.

  19. ev Says:

oh right, keys tends to be “centered around finance,” except that it includes a football player, journalists, a field hockey player, actors, a cappella singers, poets, etc. etc.
and hey, guess what, the other societies seem to be quite diverse too!

  20. @lobster crab Says:

They will when they’re working for us! Ba-DUM SHHHHHH. Now go home to your school, whichever one it is (obviously without Finals Clubs, Eating Clubs or Societies)

  21. @ev Says:

“oh right, keys tends to be “centered around finance,” except that it includes a football player, journalists, a field hockey player, actors, a cappella singers, poets, etc. etc.
and hey, guess what, the other societies seem to be quite diverse too!”

What’s your point? Most of these people will end up as consultants, bankers, or lawyers. Ivy League FTW(???).

  22. P09 Says:

Jesus Christ how many of these societies are there? What do they do exactly, besides jack each other off?

  23. Honest Question Says:

Are these like Eating Clubs where almost every single person is in one? I’m not quite sure of the size of a Yale class, and I’m too lazy to look it up, but this list seems pretty comprehensive.

  24. 0909 Says:

the list is pretty accurate, although it missed one bonesman – francisco vierya (sp?) – mixed up a couple people in other societies, and missed a few of the smaller societies altogether. still, not bad.

  25. h10 Says:

A list of Harvard punches would mostly read like a Mayors of Massachusetts circa 1700 list…
agreed with previous Harvard post, shockingly international sounding

  26. 40% of the student body? Says:

Uh… so nearly 40% of the student body belongs to a society? Maybe they should disband every group that does not own a building (is that every group below St. Elmo?) – then a membership might mean something. Better yet, they should just get rid of the whole ridiculous society system.

  27. Verny Says:

Nice post. All very good details. There are a few sites that I’ve referenced at in order to input, but they are hardly a and far between. Interesting statistics ) I was actually considering about comments last night.

  28. Doghacks Says:
