That Whole Yale Thing is Still Making Pretty Decent Videos

Matt Bakal, the Eli director of the moderately popular and pretty funny 95 Theses video, has just released a music video by Great Caesar. Ok, I admit that I was pretty effing annoyed that I saw neither Caesar nor Brutus nor Cleopatra nor Marc Antony. The band was fine. (They sound a little too much like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones if you ask me, but that might just be the horns.)

The new video called “Everyone’s a VIP to Someone” stars some dude in a variety of lumberjack shirts and a couple foxy girls in the rain. What’s potentially more interesting is Yale’s Bulldog Production company. As we’re seeing more from them, it’s pretty clear that they’re over-funded and under-talented. Soft focus, fast cuts of various objects, narrow depth of field? Please. Darren Aronofsky did that shit years ago, and we all know where he went to school. Could this be the film iteration of Veritas Records, the Ivy League kings of the Battle of Terrible Bands?

Listen, I know I can be an asshole. But I will admit that Bakal’s music video knocks Acuña’s recent clip out of the park solely based on the scant mention of penis and the fact that he didn’t steal the song from SNL.

In conclusion, we’re chilling out on video for a while. Also, we promise to write about Penn some day. Aaaannnnnddddd, you ladies in the rain can contact me at adam@ivygateblog.com.

Because the song sounds eerily similar to this:

    Except that’s a lovable story about a cat and a rabbit…

  2. 2010 Says:

Xander Dominitz was the director of 95 Theses, and Matt Bakal was his AD. They’re all the Bulldog Productions gang though.

@Couldn’t Stop: In so far as both songs have drums and horns, they sound alike… they really stole the song from here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu_moia-oVI

    I second the over-funded, under-talented comment.

i kinda dig the song though, minus the cheesy piano in the beginning. i’m a sucker for ska, what can I say?

As the former President of Bulldog Productions I can DEFINITELY tell you that we’re not over funded…in the least.

BP is great for a lot of reasons including the fact that it has given us the infrastructure to put together relatively large semi-professional film shoots to work on. We hope you enjoy what we make but when it comes down to it we do it for ourselves. We’re selfish that way.

Clearly I don’t know how to use tags in the least. The website is:

Matt Bakal did NOT direct ‘95 Theses.’ Xander Dominitz did. And I second what JoeB says. BP is a really young organization, so that have almost no funds to their name. They don’t own any equipment either. But their shoots are the most organized, most thorough shoots on campus. They know where to get the best deals on rental items, and they can utilize Yale’s insurance policy. Non-BP shoots at Yale operate under the radar, and they often ignore industry-standard rules (like keeping a 10-hour day and getting location permits). That’s an important distinction; when they graduate, BP kids will be more prepared to work on real Hollywood sets.

I think the fact that we appear to make expensive films on our budget is a testament to our quality organization. And I don’t think quick cuts and narrow depth of field are exclusive to Darren Aronofsky…
