Daily Prince Reports on Gay Internet Sex, Bigots Attack

Siegfried Roy TigerYesterday, the Daily Princetonian ran a story on the proportionally high use of Craigslist among LGBT students on campus to solicit sex. Published on the first day of Pride Week, the article included a discussion of how being gay and getting laid at Princeton is difficult, especially compared to Harvard and Yale. How is it so difficult to be gay at an Ivy League school that one must hustle to the darkest corners of t'Internet, you ask?

The privacy provided by online sites like Craigslist is one of their primary appeals, Peter said, noting that it can be “dangerous” for male students to make out with other guys on the Street.

“I’ve been kicked out of both Cottage and TI (by student ‘officers’ or at least people claiming to be officers) for dancing/making out with another male,” he explained. “The problem is, the Street (excepting Ivy and Terrace) provides a poor environment for meeting other guys. So you have to turn to other outlets.”

So Princeton students use Craigslist for their afternoon delights. That seemed cool. Until kids started commenting on the story. If comments on the Spec Giant Inflatable Penis-gate story were thoughtful, the banter from readers on the Prince's website is, well, passionate. Here's a mild example from "P10":

Gays will not rest until they've converted us all. Campus isn't welcoming of you guys??? Are you kidding me??? Half of my tuition goes to your moronic "support groups" that are listed every two days on Point. What else do you want me to do to make you feel "comfortable"? French kiss my roommates?

Leave us the crap alone. Do what you want in bed, but it's OKAY for us to be against overt gaydom.

More after the jump. Also the results of my personal Craigslist Manhunt.

I knew a guy that talked like this in my history class. His name was Adolf.

There should be a new rule where if a Prince staff member wants to censor a comment, it has to be approved by a non-Jew as well. This way, the comments forum can reflect a wider range of views and not just those of flaming liberal psychos.

But really. How did Jewish people get involved in this conversation? I mean we were talking about the relative safety of Craigslist and how the Prince has been writing some pretty good articles and stuff and now this? Oh wait, it was the same guy:

I mean this with all respect, but Gays and Jews need to pass an extra test before being admitted to Pton. We should put them in a room with someone who disagrees with them and see if they can go 3 minutes without calling that person "homophobic" or "antisemitic," their two favorite words.

You guys toss those words around like women toss lettuce.

Good. Now we're including a solid range of bigoted views. If only the trolls could toss in some good slurs or at least poke fun at a lesser Ivy and a lesser lesser non-Ivy. Like the (seemingly well-intentioned) "Craig":

you guys should have gone to Columbia or NYU. I'd say sbout 20% of the guys in CC and NYU ex-Stern are gay.

More interesting than the comments, actually, is this idea of soliciting sex on Craigslist.  (Newbies or kids who grew up in the country should probably check out the "Missed Connections" section, btw.) The Prince includes an interesting statistic in their investigatory piece about how the term "Princeton" and "19-30" in the "men-seeking-men" personals section of the site yields 176 results over the past month, while "Harvard" and "Yale" only pull up 9 and 22, respectively.

Does that mean that gay Princeton students are literally going after Craigslist sex 19-times more often than Harvard students? No, it doesn't. I looked. While you definitely get some "Princeton Undergrad" results, most are visiting businessmen looking for company in their hotel room. (Princeton is also a town, gumshoes.)

Running the same complex algorithm as the Prince yielded 36 matches for m4m hookups around "Harvard" in the past week. There's also seems to be some funny legacy fetish happening too.

Just to be thorough and not leave out that safety school in New Haven, "Yale" brought up 23 matches in the past week. And the trend of older men preying on Ivy boys continues. I'm starting to think people are right about this Craigslist being shady thing.

Maybe it’s a consequence of attending gay ol’ Columbia, but this leaves me flabbergasted. No wonder the Harvard and Princeton guys I’ve dated have been sexually stunted/retarded. They quite surely spent their undergraduate years in the closet. Keep it classy, Princeton.

Ah, I should say, as a gay kid who grew up in BFE: The internet’s a fantastic resource for meeting other gay teenagers and young adults. There’s little recourse when you’re sixteen and in the south or midwest. This has led to the bulk of my gay friendships in new places, and even some relationships. I think given the norm of heterosexuality in most places, this then transfers over to seeming creepy. In the context of CL ads seeking anonymous sex or in maladjusted matchdotcommers looking for love, this can be. But it’s not always.

Please, I beg you. Enough of your gay little thingies.
    Have yous guys no shame?

I have to agree with ‘09. This is really sort of laughable. If you’re this bothered by what someone else does in their bed then you’ve got your own sexual issues to deal with.

    |you guys should have gone to Columbia or NYU. I’d say sbout 20% of the guys in CC and NYU ex-Stern are gay.|

The thing is…he’s not wrong. I mean the Stern thing is clearly bull from a closeted Stern student (ibankers are some of the highest concentrations of closet cases as you learn here).

I’d say 20% of the male population here is indeed gay (or at least metro enough in appearance to be perceived as such by homophobes). It’s just that no one cares- and they shouldn’t! God I love Columbia. I couldn’t be dealing with this ***** at another college. Grow up.

Florida U frat members have more sense than this, Princeton. I know from experience (best ragers). Homophobia is something you should get over about the time you start algebra.

PS. The hell are “gay little thingies”?

  4. C'11 Says:

PS. I still don’t necessarily approve of the craigslist thing. That’s just gnarly any way you swing but hey, their beds.

Shame to see that every Princeton stereotype is at least partially true. Can’t even imagine what they think about Black students.

    hey adam
there are eight schools in the ivy league, not three
perhaps you should find a blog to edit where every post you write will not alienate over half of your readership.
    also, you’re a dick.

    no one cares.

  7. KEGGY Says:

Are theses the lengths you have to go to at boring-ass schools like Harvard, Yale and the like?

Hmm…here it’s pretty easy to find a nice horny match within 20 minutes on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday night.

  8. P'08 Says:

In Princeton’s defense, that comment from P’10 was the most incendiary and idiotic item posted. Most responses condemned P’10 or expressed legitimate surprise at the role of Craigslist.

Further, this blog makes the situation at Princeton seem a bit more dire than the original article or the reality reflected therein. This is the first time that I’ve ever seen IvyGate coverage worse than Prince coverage, which would be shameful for both parties if IvyGate had any shame and if the Prince hadn’t lost all vestiges of self-respect after the sorority membership/bicker coverage last year.

  9. Matty Says:

Hmm, well craiglist only works for hookups, not for anything longterm. Maybe I should take P10’s advice and go to NYU or Columbia? Hopefully I can find a boyfriend there, not a craigslist hookup but someone I can hug and watch The Office with.
