Dartmouth Students Jump to Racist Conclusions About New President

Yesterday morning, Generic Good Morning Message (GGMM), a popular email update at Dartmouth commented on the selection of President Jim Yong Kim. The comments were racist as hell, and consequently made a lot of people very angry.  GGMM managed to pull out just about every Asian-directed xenophobic comment in the book.  Including saying of Dr. Kim’s election:

It was a complete supplies.

Oh yeah you can totally tell from Dr. Kim’s resume and his mission trips to Uganda that he definitely a super villain. Let’s not leave out the part where everyone in Asia—except the kids from Slumdog Millionaire, they will always live in the slums if the press have any say—works in a Chinese restaurant and steals jobs from white people with hands:

Unless “Jim Yong Kim” means “I love Freedom” in Chinese, I don’t want anything to do with him. Dartmouth is America, not Panda Garden Rice Village Restaurant.

Y’all get ready for an Asianification under the guise of diversity under the actual Malaysian-invasion leadership instituted under the guise of diversity. It’s a slippery slope we are on. I for one want Democracy and apple pie, not Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen.

Read the email’s full text along with an “explanation” offered by Dartmouth’s Office of Pluralism and Leadership—cough, sucks at their jobs, cough—after the jump.

Good one:

This is the Generic Good Morning Message for March 3, 2009.

Yesterday came the announcement that President of the College James Wright will be replaced by Chinaman Kim Jim Yong. And a little bit of me died inside.

It was a complete supplies.

On July 1, yet another hard-working American’s job will be taken by an immigrant willing to work in substandard conditions at near-subsistent wage, saving half his money and sending the rest home to his village in the form of traveler’s checks.

I know I sure as shit won’t ever be eating my Hop dubs bubs with chopsticks. I like to use my own two American hands.

According to a response late last night by The Interns, the GGMM’s message was initially intended to be “humorous and satirical” but instead “was executed in poor
taste and offended many people in our community, as well as in the entire campus.” Thanks Interns. Evidently, the authors of the blitz will be issuing a public apology, shoegazing (like the music but more forlorn) at a number of focus groups, and organizing some sort of masquerade ball for President Kim.

Meanwhile at IvyGate, we caught onto this whole drama yesterday and really wanted to write something sooner. But honestly, being racist is soooo 20th century, and they didn’t have blogs that long ago.

Here’s the full response from The Interns, courtesy of Dartlog:

From: Pan Asian Council
Subject: Update on GGMM incident

Hello everyone,

Tonight the PAC interns and Elaine met with Sylvia Spears, Molly Bode, and representatives from the Inter-Community Council, Diversity Peer Advisor interns, and a member of General Good Morning Message (not the writer) to discuss the blitz that was sent out this morning.

As you now know, a blitz intended to be satirical and humorous was executed in poor taste and offended many people in our community, as well as in the entire campus. It has been made clear that no one on any level thinks what happened this morning was in any way acceptable, GGMM writers included. All 7 writers of the GGMM realize the gravity of the statements made in the blitz, regardless of intent, and are taking internal measures towards a resolution. The blitz from this morning will no longer be circulated.

Immediate updates:
- Tomorrow, the author and the members of GGMM will send out a campus-wide blitz apologizing to the Asian & Asian-American community, as well as Dartmouth as a whole, acknowledging not only the lack of oversight on GGMM’s part, but also the deeply offensive nature of the blitz’s contents.

-The author will be utilizing OPAL’s resources to address underlying and perhaps subconscious biases that led to the blitz being composed and sent out.

-Upper level members of the Administration will be meeting tomorrow morning to assess the situation. This issue is being taken very serious. More information to come after President Wright and administrators meet.

In the near future:
-Students will collaborate to organize a reception for President-Elect Kim. We hope to demonstrate to Dr. Kim that all of campus is very excited for his arrival.

-The author will compose a formal apology to President-Elect Kim. [sic]

Additionally, the PAC Interns will be working with Nora and Elaine to address the impact of this blitz within our community. Please feel free to contact any of the PAC interns, Elaine, Nora, or any other OPAL staff if you are upset and/or have any concern. The Diversity Peer Advisors are also a great resource. They’re student peers who are trained to talk about diversity issues like this. Blitz DPA if you’d
like to set up a meeting with a peer advisor.

Please pass this information on to your membership and let us know of any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your concern and patience during this time. It’s been a long day for many of us and all of us at PAC appreciate how students have risen to address this situation.

Have a good night. We will keep you posted.

The PAC Interns
Aimee, Ava & Erin
Office of Pluralism and Leadership

Correction: An earlier version of this post falsely stated the name of the author who wrote the GGMM message in question. Apparently, Dartmouth’s blitz system only allows these group messages to run through certain email addresses, and he forwarded this one from their intern, Lozar Theofilactidis, without reading its contents. Lozar’s signature was left off of the original quote:

************************************************************
Lozar Theofilactidis comes unto you with this gift and begs your approval.
Accept him as you would accept your own and together we will live in harmony.

the email was offensive, but OPAL is a joke. looking for his “underlying and perhaps subconscious biases that led to the blitz being composed and sent out” is pretty worthless. his biases were that the writer immaturely didnt realize the gravity of his words or the extent of his audience. his jokes were racist, but anyone can come up with infinite racist jokes about any group if you try hard enough–that is what culture does. done, no dartmouth administrative funds wasted!

no, a small group of people who don’t understand humor (not that the joke was particularly funny) have made a mountain from a mole hill and made dartmouth look ridiculous.

everyone else at dartmouth is wishing that group would try to do something productive with their time.

I visited every ivy and for some reason, and this is no way meant to be a reflection of the entire Dartmouth student body of course, but it was without a doubt the only one where I felt outright racism. I wasn’t kicked out of the gates or treated poorly but just a certain…resting vibe all around. From jokes overheard, to student groups to passing comments.

(From the rumors I expected this from Princeton but that couldn’t have been further from the truth).

I just read the blitz. The “Generic Good Morning Message” was a JOKE. It’s absolutely NOT a “popular email update” because it’s never been sent before.

And can someone tell me why we have “AfriCaSo” AND the “African-American Society”? Clearly more redundancies…

When did members of student groups like GGMM or PAC or DPA become “interns”? What happened to hierarchy? You can’t “intern” for a college kid no matter how much smarter he is than you. Why aren’t these people “members” or “officers”? Is this just resume-boosting?

43% of Dartmouth students are people of color; 49% of Columbia students are. The difference is minimal; for a “racist” campus, it sure is inclusive.

    But wait, there’s more.

Average financial aid grant at Columbia: $20,000 (for 50% of students).

Average financial aid grant at Dartmouth: $30,000 (for 50% of students).

Dartmouth is not only nearly as ethnically diverse as Columbia; it’s far more economically diverse. So — if you’ll pardon the heteronormativity — suck it.

But then again, what kind of person would put out a commentary like this and not be willing to own up to writing it and recognizing the damage he’s done to a good portion of the community. I just love how everyone who’s all for moving on and forgetting that this happened is quick to dismiss the author as stupid or “retarded”… Could it be that maybe he actually is racist?! (groundbreaking, I know!)

It’s disgusting that racist ideology is so often dismissed as idiocy. No, ladies and gentlemen, there is actually a difference and it’s when we treat such occurrences so lightly by dismissing them as products of stupidity (because we’re hesitant to actually call that “nice young man” racist) that no one is ever called out on their bigotry. That’s despicable.

… and the idea that he was being “post-racial” and that that makes it all okay is just disappointing. you can’t be post-racial in a society that is not post-racial. you can’t just throw around the n-word because YOU’RE not racist. there are people that actually believe non-whites are inferior to whites (and if you disagree with that.. well then you’re beyond help). so when you say something that has racist roots (even if ur not racist), its JUST as offensive because MOST LIKELY the people on the receiving end of those comments (in this case, Asian-Americans) have had experiences in which these comments were actually used against them in a serious manner… so why would you expect them NOT to be offended?

Honestly, people defending this as just being satire are way off base. If Dartmouth’s new president were Black, Hispanic, Native American, or gay and there were similar “satirical” comments directed at him / her, this would be all over the national news, there would be demonstrations and riots big time, and the author’s name would be plastered everywhere. Just because it’s more PC to make fun of Asians with racial stereotypes doesn’t mean it’s right or should be any more defensible.

For all the overreaching that University speech codes do, maybe Dartmouth should use theirs intelligently and go after the author of the e-mail — I’d suggest “giving him a semester off” to think about his conduct.

Yeah it could be interpreted as bigoted and all that but how dare you suggest punishment for exercising speech? No matter how far Hanover is from civilization, it’s not Communist China. What’s next? The administration expels anyone who exposes an element of its incompetence? And Dartmouth used to have a speech code? I hope it doesn’t anymore. Here at Yale, we have a code that explicitly says that people can’t get in trouble for speaking whatever they wish because restricting this right inevitably has a chilling effect on campus intellectual discourse.

Satire? Really? Dartmouth allows racist comments like these under the cover of “satire” to be mass distributed on a regular basis through students’ emails? So if they published a satire on African-Americans, would they use the term “Nigger” in it and call it humorous? And I’m the “fucking idiot” and “dumbass.” If anything, GGMM should not have access to a database of students’ emails. That kid got off easy.

“Dartmouth allows racist comments like these under the cover of “satire” to be mass distributed on a regular basis through students’ emails? … If anything, GGMM should not have access to a database of students’ emails.”

Anyone can send anything to the whole campus if they want to. About a week ago someone impersonated The Sphinx, a secret senior society and emailed the whole campus claiming the society was opening to the public. The Council on Student Organizations routinely makes email lists available to any campus organization registered with them, and from there it’s just a hop and a skip to anyone having those email lists.

Having said that, GGMM appears to be sent through a Dartmouth listserv (instead of using a simple email list), so it is subjecting itself to the campus authorities in a sense.

The problem with satire is that no matter how it’s done it pisses people off. But it is very bad when it’s done wrong. The GGMM mail was very poorly-written satire; whether they should be punished for that is a subjective question, but the general Dartmouth policy on offensive statements — at least in the classroom — seems to disregard intent and focus on whether anyone found the statement offensive. The moral of the story: if you’re going to satirize a controversial issue, you’d better do it right, because getting it wrong is no ordinary mistake.

It’s not just about the individual, because those remarks just show that somehow this person thought those things were acceptable to utter in that environment. Either the school is not making enough effort to raise awareness and respect for diversity, or it’s not making enough of an effort to raise awareness and respect for diversity. There are no two ways about that. Oh, and I’m not an English major or anything… err, but there are tons of typos and some glaring grammar issues on that “official” apology… geeze people.

    Nope, he’s ours now.

Also, this is hardly comparable to the use of the N-word. The N-word is associated with centuries of brutality and crimes against humanity. The GGMM blitz was an obvious (if failed attempt) at lampooning ignorant xenophobes through satire. In any case, whenever something like this happens, the Dartmouth community as a whole tends to rally around those who felt offended.

It’s absolutely moronic and indicative of Harvard’s institutional constipation for Harvard students to suggest that their walled-in Cambridge campus is somehow exempt from racism. And while I appreciate that a Yale student has stepped up and defended free speech, I will say that New Haven is the only place I’ve ever witnessed a rich white girl ask a beggar if he accepted credit cards.

  • D ’07

I can’t speak for Harvard as a whole, Dartmouth, but if you guys don’t want Jim Kim (though I’m not saying that’s what you said), we’d take him back, gladly, in a heartbeat.

  • rules of racism

but hell if any of the idiots at Harvard would go so far as Lozar “Mr. America” Theofilactidis (yeah that sounds like John Smith) to make people think he’s funny

but lets be real… we live in a country that created “Barack the Magic Negro,” are we really surprised that some people are just assholes?

  • Haha

Lol. Holy shit. What a fucking surprise. Several of the Harvard posters still turn this into something that makes their college sound even MORE elitist.

“So glad my school doesn’t have an inane newsletter like this.”
    Wow.

And Harvard ’12..keep it in your pants, it’s ok. I understand you’re new to this.

  • Dartmouth old alum

Speaking as a 70s-era Dartmouth alum, and alumni organization leader:

Jim Yong Kim is entirely welcome as Dartmouth’s new president. Outside of a few snide comments from a single writer on the Dartmouth Review blog, until this GGMM thing I’d heard only rave reviews of the search committee’s recommendation, and the Board’s acceptance of it. Those among you who say ‘Dartmouth doesn’t deserve Jim Kim’ are off the mark. ‘Way off the mark.

If your mind is so narrow or inexperienced, that you presume a matter such as this, spawned by a single undergraduate’s act, speaks for the nature of the entire institution… may I suggest instead that you consider Liberty University, or Bob Jones University, where your sensibility will never be threatened.

Having been raised in Iowa, and having attended Brown in the late 70s/early 80s, and having weathered the vicissitudes of academic politics at Harvard (which are absolutely racist and sexist), I have every expectation that this incident represents neither the first, nor the most juvenile, manifestation of ‘racism’ which Dr. Kim has encountered.

For those of you who support these types of racist & inconsiderate messages, I have news for all of you.

In the real world, supporting these types of issues may mean that you are cutting your once promising academic careers short, on your way to graduate school of any kind and in any future employment you seek.

White supremacy, white racism, and white affirmative action has no place in this country.

Be wise to keep your comments, even private and anonymous ones to yourself.

Especially in this difficult economy, where our country is no longer what it once was, you can ill afford to be labeled as ignorant and/or racist of the Rush Laimbaugh/Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly variety.

Today, you need not only a great education, professional degree, license, etc., but you also need broad personal skills, tolerance, and diversity.

You, as a white man or woman, will ALWAYS be suspect in the minds of a growing number of elite non-whites who are serving in leadership roles in this country.

The growing economic influence of the Pacific Rim and beyond in many non-white countries, means that your academics, careers, livelihoods, etc. depend on cooperation and understanding of different cultures.

Failure to understand this means that you will FAIL.

Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, and many other idiots, both liberal and conservative clinging to racist and/or ignorant beliefs are going to FAIL.

    Do you know why?

Think with your intelligent brains you fools. THINK…..

May I also remind you of one of your once greatly worshiped heroes back in 2000 and 2004:

    George Dubya Bush

He is a primary example of the arrogance, selfishness, and ignorance of what is wrong with this country.

As an affirmative action beneficiary, using his parent’s connections to get into Yale and later Harvard Business School, he has been the model of the excesses and hypocrisy of this country, whether it’s liberal, conservative, or independent, democrat or republican.

I need not type down his list of crimes, whether real or imagined.

None of you folks posting racist remarks on university websites and craiglists can say anything regarding this screw-up.

Do you want a repeat of this greatest failure in the 20th Century to repeat itself in your lives?

do you have down syndrome? or are you just illiterate? it’s an issue about people mocking racism. if you say “the simple fact that they repeated racial stereotypes makes them racist,” then you’re saying everyone should just pretend racism doesn’t exist. i would rather live in a world where people at least try to deride xenophobes instead of just burying their heads in sand and pretending they don’t exist, but i guess maybe that’s just “the real world” to you.

    Ma’am or Sir:

It appears that you live in an air bubble you seem to have concocted for yourself.

It’s up to a person’s interpretation. If let’s say you send an e-mail list like this through a worklist serv., individuals are going to interpret this supposed satirical message as either a good satire or joke, a satire or joke written in bad taste, or just garden variety racism. People think differently and you will have to understand that because they think differently, they are going to interpret things differently.

Failure to realize this, you young air bubble, means out the door for YOU to contribute to the already high unemployment out in the working world.

Just understand that there are many of us who can be offended by this even if it’s meant as a joke or a satire. I read what was written and it was very offensive. If you happen to have written it and your name gets out in public, well I will feel sorry for you because this can end your career or graduate/license aspirations before it even got off the ground.

This is reality. Get with the program. The game has changed. No more affirmative action for you to get yourself a job.

Just because you come out of Dartmouth does not mean that you are any more important than someone coming out of Cornell.

You appear racist, intolerant, and/or ignorant, and you can join those people in the unemployment line for a long time.

And I’d prefer using those chopsticks to stick food into my mouth and not into other people.

Like Rush Limbaugh, violent desires and responses means no answers. Just fear, just fear….

Since when did anyone get offended by the use of the word Englishman? Irishman? Frenchman? Scotsman?

Its about time people stopped being so sensitive, and if they dont happen to like it, see how well they like living in Japan as a Chinese person.

The USA isnt that bad and people should be allowed to express criticism.

As with any racial slur, the degrading ideas that have been historically associated with the term “Chinaman” are what make it offensive.

I don’t understand what is meant by “see how well they like living in Japan as a Chinese person.” But back to the original story, it’s so offensive I don’t know where to begin.

Dumbfuck Intern, I really hope you learn from this incident. You won’t get away with this kind of moronic ignorance outside of school.

  • Sorely Disappointed

I’m absolutely disappointed in the comments of some people. How can something like this be swept under the rug? How can we “just move on”? These are the same types of things that were said when african-americans were being persecuted. Some say that derogatory statements (the “N” word) are different than “Chinaman” (or any of the other racist comments made in the original post) because “The N-word is associated with centuries of brutality and crimes against humanity”. D ’07 (who posted the aforementioned reasoning behind the differences between the N-word and Chinaman) should go back and brush up on his history. For years, people of Chinese and Asian descent who lived in the US were subjected to brutality and crimes against humanity (who do you think built the railroad that connected the eastern US to the west? Who did the white man’s laundry? Who was tricked by the British during the Opium Wars? The list goes on and on…). The only reason you don’t know about it is because Asian people haven’t really made a big stink of it – they tend to try to change their circumstances through hardwork and education. This could be the reason why white people feel so threatened by Asians (thus, the comments by people about Asians taking jobs or admission spots at Ivy League Universities away from Caucasians). How can there be people of such narrow and limited minds? Don’t they see that what has made the US a great country has been our diversity? Can’t they see that the winds of change are here to stay – Obama being elected isn’t enough for them to see this? Last week, a post printed in a prominent NY newspaper made fun of Obama as a monkey. I’ll bet the post was created by a white person who probably made a similar “satirical” post when they were in college. People, open your eyes and your minds! Things like this just aren’t funny and are downright ridiculous in this age and time! Bad judgement is not an excuse! If you happen to be admitted to an Ivy League school, I would assume you should have enough brain power to understand and accept cultural diversity. Whoever wrote this post is a disgrace to himself, to his family, to the Dartmouth community, to the Ivy League community, to the US, and to the whole global society. He should do everyone a favor and just come forth with a sincere apology, and enroll himself in a cultural sensitivity class so that we can all TRULY move on from this. Racism has no room in today’s society.

  • Glad I didn’t go to Darmouth

Is it worth pointing out that Dr. Kim is Korean-American? I realize that the author was attempting humor through over-the-top stereotyping — was he also poking fun at how many white people are unable to distinguish between the distinct cultures, ethnic groups, and languages in Asia?

D ’07 says this is hardly comparable to using the N-word. Thanks, Sorely Disappointed and Harvard ’10 for making the comparison; I agree any racism is racism. And yes, institutionalized racism against Chinese immigrants has been part of the U.S. for more than 150 years. See http://www.cprr.org/Museum/Chinese_Syllabus.html if you need evidence:

“The [Chinese railroad] workers asked for a raise to forty dollars per month. They wanted the workday in the open to be limited to ten hours and that in the tunnels reduced to eight. They also objected to the right of the overseers of the company to either whip them or restrain them from leaving the road when they desired other employment. This strike so alarmed the railroad that they wired East for several thousand Negroes as replacements.”

To my fellow Asians and Asian Americans, all 14.4 million-plus STRONG living, working and contributing to the US society and economy, I am with you.

However you choose to respond to this outrageous, highly racist incident, I am with you. But, respond you must. Take action, whether by posting about this incident on your blogs, talking about it with your friends, spreading the word of white bigotry and denial, making sure that when you are in a position of power, to only hire and employ truly progressive individuals (not racists dressed in satire’s clothing), or, delivering a message through swift and brutal action – YOU MUST ACT NOW. Silence is complicity. Look, none of us want to think that we are targets of discrimination, but it happens all the time. Why? Because Asians/Asian Americans, Canadians, etc are more complacent, on the whole, as a group than other “minorities.” We still believe that this is a meritocracy, though it rarely is. Don’t forget all the Chinese Americans that were additionally taxed unfairly in the 1800′s for being Chinese, the railroad workers who were kidnapped by white traders to come to this country on slave ships reminiscent of the Middle Passage, the Chinese miners lynched and killed, the Japanese (many of whom were third or fourth generation Americans) put into concentration camps during WWI their property stolen and never returned, the Phillipino veterans who fought so bravely during all the wars and were never recognized by the US government, the Vincent-Chin type killings, the countless robberies and the rapes…. for every Miley Cyrus, Rose O Donnell, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and overprivileged, but so sadly ignorant Dartmouth undergrad: KNOW YOUR HISTORY, SPREAD THE WORD and for God’s sake and all that is just in the world, DO SOMETHING. Now is the time. WE have never held more power in the US and in the WORLD. History is coming back around and RIGHT WILL BEAT MIGHT.

I think it’s great the Dartmouth will finally get a chance to get out of the xenophobic cellar that they’ve cocooned themselves into and get involved with the rest of the world under Dr. Kim’s leadership. Isn’t it tiring to just sit idly by in your uppity, country club, secluded world and make a difference in this world like the rest of the other Ivy League schools? If you look at what Dartmouth has brought to the table that’s been publicly positive….can’t really recall anything earth-shattering. It’s very unfortunate that this is what they’ll be known for – racist students who’ve been brainwashed into thinking they’re better than everyone else just because of their random birth into the existence they now live in. Come on Dartmouth! You can be better than this.

Anonymous – that was uncalled for and totally unproductive. Dartmouth05 has every right to his own opinion, though depending on the way he wrote his post, it could be misconstrued. And that’s kind of the point of how this whole thing started: the person who posted the racial post against Dr. Kim (supposedly) meant it one way instead of how it’s commonly perceived by everyone who reads it. People – please be very clear when posting about a touchy subject such as this as you can see how quickly something of this nature can spiral out of control.

The Real Patriot – good call on the Japanese who were persecuted in WW1 and 2. (yes, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, but the fact remains that Japanese-Americans who were loyal to America were still punished and sent to internment camps for no good reason other than the fact that their parents or grandparents or great grandparents or great great grandparents were from Japan). What this country has done in times of war has been a travesty. If we all want to really debate about something worth debating about (because racism shouldn’t even be an issue anymore in these times), let’s talk about George W. Bush being held accountable for the war crimes he committed in Iraq. Now that’s something worth talking and debating about!

the funniest part of all this is the people who write things like “this is not humorous!” obviously you’re not the arbiter of humor and obviously a great deal of people thought this e-mail was funny, just like they thought it would be funny if it was an onion article (a la “black man given america’s worst job”). then a few people got up in arms and all the people who laughed about it before changed their minds and decided it was offensive.

just live with the fact, some people find humor in things other people find offensive. this will always be the case. if you find something someone says or writes offensive, you just tell them, and if they care about their relationship with you, they’ll try to learn from your perspective. trying to imagine a world in which every kind of humor is offensive to no one is just some fascist orwellian nightmare that thankfully will never come to life.

guy who wrote the email was obviously trying to make a certain group of people laugh, which he maybe did, but he failed to see that he would offend another group the way he did. now he knows, and the next time he thinks about making a joke like that he will know the consequences — that he’s going to have to sacrifice a whole lot of people liking him just to make that one group of people laugh…probably won’t be worth it. also, judging by the fact that reading that e-mail makes it immediately clear it’s some onion-style satire, if that guy is some kind of hate-filled racist, then the millions and millions of people who watch colbert, daily show, south park, etc. etc. are too (basically, all of america). let’s just deal with reality and try to get along in a free society where everyone is always going to be different.

All I know is, the “Modest Proposal” changed my life. Irish babies are delicious! Thank god there are still people out there writing such serious articles telling me what to think. I don’t know what I would do if I found out that these were clever political satire or anything. On another note, at least its good to see that the people of America can take a break from doing anything meaningful with their lives in order to get offended as all get-out at things that have questionable effects on their lives. Keep on rockin, I’ll keep eating babies, because I believe satire is a synonym for bigot.

I am a Chinese. I’ve been in the US for a couple of years now for a Ph.D. degree. There is a usual racism as reflected in that Tommy Brothers’ email and also another one as the black people are overusing it. I will go back to China eventually and so I am not afraid to say so. Every time they don’t get something, they will outcry saying it’s due to their skin color. Can’t they just get good education and be taught less violent by their parents? I was crossing roads the other day when the signal clearly shows pedestrians only, and the black driver was honking me and mocking at me. It’s like saying, what can you do, chink? I know a lot of black people who I admire and respect, including the current US President. However, as a whole race, they really need to work hard to improve their image. Protesting or outcrying does very little, you have to work hard and behave as an adult to earn respect. I hope I am not offending the black viewers on this blog and I hope I am among the first efforts to responde to the matter the Attorney General was hoping American people to openly discuss.

Can you stop it with saying that you are Asian then trying to make your point. You tried this tool on another thread. It’s really childish of you. If you can’t make your point without saying you are Asian than degrading another race, good luck to you in life. It’s probably Tommy Brothers realizing that he effed up badly and that he might not get a decent job because he has burned so many bridges. I hope my stereotype of him being a privileged WASP is right, because he will need all of his “privilege” to find a job in the future after he graduates.

Point #1: If this blitz was a mere satire, why doesn’t the author disclose his/her name and defend his/her writing? Why act like a coward… Come out and defend your freedom of speech.

Point #2: To those who say we should all move on because this is an act of “idiocy”, just a minor offense. I am sure many well-meaning Germans probably thought the same way when young overzealous Nazis terrorized the Jews in the 30s. It only took a few more years of silence by the majority (i.e. cowardice) before Hitler and a group of “idiots” killed millions of innocent people. Mere “moving-on” by the well-meaning, non-idiotic majority emboldens the perpetrators (the idiots) and marginalizes the victims.

By Godwin’s law, people like Harvard alum have just lost the debate. Seriously though, don’t you people think it’s actually pretty devaluing to the actual atrocities of genocide when you compare a poorly-written satirical email to Kristallnacht, Mein Kampf, or Pol Pot’s rhetoric? There is a slippery slope from racist rhetoric to genocide, but I don’t think this email is going to be the one that puts us on that slope.

I’m Asian, and I think the email was ridiculously stupid, but the kid doesn’t deserve to be crucified for it. I think it’s silly to just tell everyone to move on, that there’s nothing to complain about here, but at the same time, this notion that this email represents a serious attempt to denigrate Asians is just ridiculous. It’s plainly very poor satire, and that’s all there is to it. The author’s already emailed the entire campus with his real name to apologize, and having his real name associated with this is punishment enough. Let’s get back to real genocides, like the one in Darfur, and real racists like the idiots still claiming Barack Obama isn’t a real American.

to the people suggesting we just “move on”:

if you are white, i think you need to consider your own inherent position of unearned white privilege. What “we” are you referring to? It’s easy enough for you to “move on,” given that you can safely make the assumption that no e-mail will be distributed that makes fun of or belittles the racial group with which you identify based on race alone. Or that even if such an email were distrtibuted, ultimately, as a white person, you are still in the position of power. No “joke” like that can undermine your power–in a more “laymen’s terms” way of putting it, no one will take you less seriously because some intern made a joke about you being a dumb white guy. That’s quickly laughed off. Jokes about Asians, black people, etc., are also laughed off, but they feed into long-standing stereotypes that paint these people as something Other than everyday people, that define these people. I’d like to meet the person who can make a valid argument that white people actually suffer some legitimate kind of oppression based on the very few race-based anti-white slurs out there; whereas who is really going to argue that racial groups like Asians, blacks, and Hispanics have a hell of a hard time fighting against being stereotyped as (in no particular order) hypersexual, violent, studious, socially inadept, poor, job-stealers, etc. These stereotypes actually affect the way other people view and interact with people of color.

I don’t go to Dartmouth, but I have other connections with the College. I see it as pretty damn important that the Dartmouth students and administration send the message very strongly that what happened here was wrong and harmful. I’m not saying the people responsible should be expelled necessarily, or anything like that. Rather, I’m reacting to the “it’s not a big deal” attitude. Because it is. Racism is a very big issue still these days. Just because you’re white and don’t feel its full effects doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Just because you live on the more liberal east coast doesn’t mean racism doesn’t still exist. Just because you attend a liberal arts school doesn’t mean you are above implicating yourself in racism. Look around you. How do you think Dr. Kim actually feels? Do you think he feels safe expressing his real feelings? I cannot speak for Dr. Kim and I don’t know his real feelings on the matter. I’ve never met him and had never heard of him before reading this article. But to me at least, it hardly seems fair that because someone else made racist comments, Dr. Kim himself was put in the position of having to tread lightly in order to not be stereotyped in some other demeaning way, such as “angry Asian” or something else. And consider your own positions of privilege before you dismiss the issue.

That email was neither witty nor satirical, just plain racist. Sorry to say, my Dartmouth chums, but a person writing such drivel would be rusticated in a jiffy at a proper university like Oxford. He’d have the proctors come down on him like a sack of shit; if he didn’t apologise to the person concerned and the whole academic community, he would be sent down like a Messerschmitt.

I don’t suppose many of you fine Dartmouth minds know the meaning of rusticated or Messerschmitt. Come to think of it: haven’t met a single Dartmouth graduate at Oxford, let alone a Rhodes or Marshall scholar from the mountains of New Hampshire. Now, just why might that be the case?

I don’t suppose you know the meaning of Parkhursted or Arizona? Then again, I wouldn’t expect that of you. Whereas you’ve spent four years at a premier university and taken away nothing but institutional chauvinism and unfounded academic entitlement, Dartmouth encourages us to look outward, lest we look like fools.

(And if you didn’t catch any of that, I’m referring to the fact that “rustication” largely disappeared from the American lexicon during the 20th century, and is not widely used outside of British schools Wikipedia. Hence, I would not expect you to be familiar with the verb “Parkhurst,” the analogous jargon at our little school. Similarly, while the Battle of Britain may have firmly branded the image of a German Messerschmitt upon the brains of young, British school children, there is no reason for the planes to be so engrained within the American psyche.) So yeah. Don’t be a douche.

Similarly, while the Battle of Britain may have firmly branded the image of a German Messerschmitt upon the brains of young, British school children, there is no reason for the planes to be so engrained within the American psyche.) So yeah. Don’t be a douche.

Dartmouth 11 said that the author emailed the campus with his name to apologize for his racist satire. So what’s his/her full name and if known, his class status and hometown? Thanks.

The author’s name is Tommy Brothers, Dartmouth ’11. Someone wrote that he is actually Canadian.

I would urge the responsible members of the Dartmouth Community to petition the administration to adopt a speech code similar to those in place at many of the most enlightened institutions of higher learning in this country.

While I do thank them warmly, I am a tad surprised that neither douchenozzle nor fartmouth has cared to engage with the real issue. Monsieur Brothers had sent out a racist email, which likely offended several people, then proceeded to apologise to the Dartmouth community. Matter closed, or is it?
As I have had the pleasure of attending one of the finest boarding schools in North America, I do know that such acts are most certainly NOT tolerated in civilised quarters of the New World. Arrogance is acceptable, hazing goes ever on, but racism is a no-no. Perhaps Dr. Kim should have a word with Lord Patten about these matters.
Now, on to the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships. Having spent several years at this wretched establishment, I have not yet met a single soul from Dartmouth. Ye harken unto me, Dartmouth: “Get those applications in; Awksfurd’s cool!”

First of all, the overall atmosphere from the Dartmouth community when they announced Dr. Kim as our president elect was a positive one. Most people were really excited, and little was said about his race. Secondly, as an asian student at Dartmouth, I feel that the overall feeling that the campus has is not of racism–but the complete opposite. I have a pretty diverse group of friends at Dartmouth, most of whom aren’t asian even though I am. Although the email was a failed satirical attempt about our new president, I understand why it was written but am also proud at how the Dartmouth community responded to it and the way it was handled. As a campus, we’re by no means “racist.”

I am a Latino but I think that if people make stupid, failed attempts at satire about us, it is their right to do so. Being a fool is it’s own punishment. What scares me more than the occasional racist buffoon are all these fascist posters who want to impose speech codes like other “more enlightened” schools and “stick chopsticks in the eyes” of their fellow students who say something they don’t like. Or how about the poster that said that people who listen to and agree with Rush Limbaugh shouldn’t be able to get a job in this country. How about this for a suggestion — if someone says something that offends you try the following: a)ignore them; b) use your free speech to make a rational arguement in opposition, or c)offend them right back with witty satire.
People need to stop making a federal case out of everything and ruining peoples lives over tasteless jokes.

Have you ever think how many Americans are there in Korea? You’ll never figure it out. There are everywhere. They earn more than 2,000 – 3,000 dollars a month (this is the net income because the tax rate in Korea is very little) with a luxurious apartment offered for free. Many Americans who failed to find a job in their own country come to Korea for better opportunities.
I’m an Asian student, who will go back to my country after graduation. I will definitely get a job in my country, Korea because I know I will be paid much more than here and the tax much lower than here. The general level of salary is much higher than here in America.
I’m here to study English here. All I do here is spending money. I thought Americans will appreciate for that because I spend about U$30,000 for tuition, books, apartment rent a year here!
