It’s Still Around. As Indulgent As Ever.
The Paper Trail – an education blog for U.S. News & World Report – has once again listed IvyGate as a contender for the best alternative media outlet of the year. Other nominees for the poll, which closes on February 17, include Wesleying, Bwog, The Daily Clog, Mads Vassar, Onward State, Saxa Speak, Timothy Dwight, MiddBlog, and the Critical Badger. Presently we are in last place, with a mere 1.35% of all votes. By contrast, Timothy Dwight – a blog about a certain cult group residential hall at Yale – is leading the polls at 28.72%, and Bwog – the blog of Columbia’s Blue & White – is in second place with 24.9%.
The reasons why IvyGate is being trounced by the likes of a dorm blog at Yale and campus-specific new media rags are numerous. One explanation is that some sites, like Timothy Dwight and Bwog, have posted links to the poll below their mastheads and are urging readers to vote multiple times. Another reason may have to do with the fact that IvyGate content has been conspicuously spare since the beginning of the new semester. This is due to our own laxity – we’re lazy and underpaid (read: paid nothing) – and also because we’ve been sorting out, in a productive way, our various levels of commitment for 2009 and onward.
In short: the hibernation is over and we’re as eager to probe the bizarre depths of higher ed as we’ve ever been. If you’ve got a hot tip or want to write for us – we’re hiring! – email us at tips@ivygateblog.com.

Now I can complain in the comments about how specific IvyGate articles are bad rather than complain about how IvyGate articles are sparse!
Hooray Ivy cynicism!

You’d best not be playing with our hearts, IvyGate…

Bwog is getting too high and mighty. Kick the crap out of them!

That’s just a sneaky way of saying “we suck — but we’re uniquely busy and unpaid! and other sites suck for promoting themselves, but we won’t mind if you vote for us! we promise not to suck as much.”
In conclusion, have a nice weekend.

Even with the decline of IvyGate, I don’t see how a blog with a target audience of about 400 could be doing 20 times better than a blog with a target audience of 50,000. I say this poll is rigged.

I think onward state is either cheating or (gasp) is really popular.
Bastards.

Wait, why would anyone want to be hired by IvyGate if you’re being paid nothing?

As of a few hours ago, we were winning. And we were winning honestly and fairly – by voting as many times as possible, and encouraging our friends, families, and fellow Yalies to do the same.
Middlebury is now winning thanks to a clever programmer. But TD would never stoop that low.
(Anyways, yayylie, ivygate’s target audience is not 50,000 by any means. Very few ivy leaguers, besides the recklessly self-celebratory among us, frequent this blog.)

Can you make a post about anything soon please?
Just dig up some 3rd-rate magazine or newspaper’s college rankings or something. I crave a sense of superiority!

To be fair, while Ivy Gate might not reach all the alumni of the League, it is aimed at being the blog of anyone whose alma mater is of the Ancient Eight. The TD blog, while likely more popular (especially this semester, in which IvyGate seems to have been on extended vacation), is the blog of the TD freshman class. It’s not just about “one dorm” but only the freshman of that “one dorm” who purport to speak for their residential college at large.
I have nothing against the TD blog, but it seems a bit hypocritical for anyone who supports it to denounce the IvyGate audience as “recklessly self-celebratory”. I’d wager that plenty of unpretentious people find good reason to check out IvyGate from time to time (or they did when it still posted things).
