Election Candy for the Young and– HOLY SHIT OBAMA JUST WON

America's collective crush on Obama finally consummated last night. At 11PM EST, approximately 30 seconds after the polls closed in California, the television networks called the presidential election for Obama and effete intellectual young folks came streaming out of dormitories the nation around and—

Ohmigod. Question 2 passed! It's legal to smoke pot at Harvard!!! (sort of)

Now where was I? Oh, right. Orgiastically celebratory young people, pouring into the street at universities like Penn (and recorded by the Daily Pennsylvanian):

And at Columbia, as witnessed by Bwog...

Obama is exactly the kind of phony African-American beneficiary of affirmative action at Harvard, the kind who are either immigrants, outright foreigners (like Barack Sr.) or have a white parent or grandparent, of whom Harvard Law professor Lani Guinier has been complaining about for years:

Guinier, a Harvard law professor, was quoted in The Boston Globe at the time as saying that most minority students at elite colleges were “voluntary immigrants,” not descended from slaves. “If you look around Harvard College today, how many young people will you find who grew up in urban environments and went to public high schools and public junior high schools?” she said. “I don’t think, in the name of affirmative action, we should be admitting people because they look like us, but then they don’t identify with us.”

Obama likely has more black ancestors who sold slaves to the (Arab) white man than black ancestors who were slaves under the (European) white man. (He also has white slaveowning ancestors in his white family tree.)

Of course, if you look at the Obamas, the authentic African-American, Michelle Robinson Obama, whose all-American slave ancestry would put her near the top of Guinier’s list of most deserving of reparations due to ancestry, wasted her affirmative action sinecure at Guinier’s Harvard Law School, giving up practicing law way back in 1993. In contrast, Mr. Obama, the ultimate phony in terms of eligibility for affirmative action reserved for African-Americans, seems to have done pretty well for himself.

Guinier is, by her own standards, another phony African-American. Her mother is Jewish (that’s why she looks so much like the late Gilda Radner) and her father was a famous Jamaican immigrant union leader for the Communist Party USA. But she retains enough of her paternal Marxism to feel guilty about this abuse of class in the name of race.

Are you serious Harvard ‘09? Phony African American? Really? Just because past generations of his family did not share in the collective struggle of African Americans over the last 400 years in America does not mean he is any more or less African American.

I am pretty sure outside of ones self identity, another part of identity is how people view you. Prior to his rise to fame, he was another black person, with people not bother to differentiate between his being descended from slaves or from Africa. I am fairly certain that places like Virginia (my home), North Carolina, South Carolina etc, differentiated between him and other people who looked the same.

Affirmative action is not just about a correction for the sins of slavery, but the overall wrong of the categorization of a people based on the color of their skin, and the subsequent discrimination they experienced. Also affirmative action, particularly as done by private institutions is about (until recently when institutions decided this sounded a bit paternalistic) exposing the institutions students to various cultures and diversity, a diversity that perhaps even transcends race.

Now I am an African American from the south, who went to a pretty good undergraduate institution (Williams is at least better than Brown and Cornell), and have never experienced a day of outward discrimination. Nor did my mother before me. Nor did her parents, nor theirs. Does that make me less African American because they did not share directly “in the cultural experience”. Do I need to provide documentation to law schools when I apply proving that I am a direct descendant of slaves?

Also, the whole premise of your argument is flawed for it is quite possible and probably likely that Barack and his Wife got into HLS because of you know, of being qualified. I am pretty sure he was the president of the HLR, meaning he was not stupid.
