Yale’s Tallest Skinny Girl Pre-Tapped for… Something

America's Next Top Model alumnus Victoria Marshman will soon be joining the shadowy legions of secrecy, if her participation in secret society pre-tap night is any indicator. Unless, of course, she wanders campus with a rainbow-striped bedsheet wrapped around her derriere on a regular basis, in which we apologize for the spreading vile, false rumors. That's Tory in the back, with the bike helment on it.

What?! So these so-called “secret societies” have public “registration” events?! How lame. What happened to meeting in graveyards under the cover of darkness??

  2. anon Says:

keggy: there’s plenty of secrecy–far more than at any time in society history–to be found, have no fear. but many of the societies have their taps run around and do various things on campus as well. bear in mind also that just because you are running around on tap night (or pre-tap night, as the case may be) doesn’t signify which society you belong to. so it’s not as though anything is given away.

also, ivygate: given the sheer number of senior societies on campus at the present moment, the only shocker would have been if Marshman *didn’t* get tapped for one of them.

  10. y10 Says:

vile false rumors…you mean like that fake skull and bones tap list?

  11. Florida State '15 Says:

What are these secret societies and how can I become a member of one?

  12. y11 Says:

When you’re older. Tory is great, I hope she got into a good one.

  13. julia Says:

Tory is in DSG (Drunk Senior Girls). The girl next to her is Julia Galeota also of DSG

  14. y09 Says:

nah dsg taps didn’t have to dress up like idiots. get your story straight kids.

  15. secret society anonymous Says:

Most “good” societies – the ones with tombs and alumni support – don’t turn tap night into a public spectacle. Most of their activities are confined in private space, as “secret” society activities ought to be. BZ does have its bikini fest, etc. but generally if you see people “dressed up like idiots,” they are members of underground societies. I’m sure Tory was sought after by some good ones, but perhaps she is one of those Yalies who are too cool to join a prestigious society. Little does she realize that societies, prestigious or not, are all drinking groups (except bones I guess although they bend the rules once in a while), and at least in good ones, you don’t have to drink PBR all the time.

  16. anon Says:

note, ’secret society anonymous,’ that pre-tap is *not* tap night.

  17. anon Says:

also, now that I mention it: come off it. like ’secret society activities ought to be?’ your societies’ vaunted ’secrecy’ is only 25 or so years old. and kind of asinine.

  18. secret society anonymous Says:

    @anon
    Whoa! Chill out dude!
First off, I would argue that the “vaunted secrecy” was much more real before the 70s. Back then, everything was kept secret except the roster. Nowadays, people have a very good idea what senior societies do, most tombs are open to visitors, and as I said earlier, many of them have devolved into drinking groups anyway. I had a lot of fun, but the experience wasn’t exactly what I expected from one of the oldest groups on campus.

I always thought the most “asinine” aspect of the current system was the pre-tap/tap antics. Even as an underclassman, I always thought that interrupting classes, dressing up in costumes and screaming (literally and figuratively) “Look at me! I just got tapped!” was annoying and insensitive. In my opinion, this hypocritical (and ostentatious) smugness is far worse than living up to the term “secret society” and keeping tap-related affairs private.

  20. Uncle Toby Says:

The actual secrecy of the societies has been in flux for years. They weren’t very secret at all during their height in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Tap night was a regular who’s-who of campus leaders and very, very public. The activities were still fairly secret, but that’s it. The current vaunted secrecy of the landed societies is the only respectable remnant of that time period; the “asinine” antics of the unlanded groups puts them on par with frats and other clubs. That said, it was the birth of the residential colleges that sparked the society decay. They provided new social hubs and student headquarters (not necessarily a bad thing). A warning to Princeton: As the system grows on your campus, kiss the eating clubs goodbye in a similar fashion.

  21. chris Says:

OK, Victoria, you can stop the “anonymous” posts calling yourself “sweet” and “insanely smart”.

  22. y10 Says:

There was a group of ridiculously dressed people all chanting/yelling “Tory!” last night at like 10 on Old Campus by the entryway to Durfee’s.

  23. what a joke Says:

who the fuck cares if a group of dorks were “chanting” anything?

  24. y11 Says:

Depending on the nature of the ridiculous dress, they could have been members of the Tory Party. Just a thought.

  25. y09 Says:

obviously that wasn’t dsg. dsg would never take someone lame like tory marshman… julia galeota on the other hand is sweet.

  26. will Says:

tory is really smart, she plays it down though

  27. Jeb Says:

She’s in a landed society. It’s not DSG. I’m surprised no one has figured out what it is yet! It’s full of great people and she’s going to have a blast. Tory rocks!

  28. vox Says:

    Hell yeah I’d tap that!

  29. @y09 Says:

I think it would be more accurate to say that tory marshman would never accept something as lame as dsg.

  30. y09 Says:

    shes in elmo’s

  31. secret society anonymous Says:

BZ or Elmo? Are there other landed groups that do ridiculous things?

  32. y09 Says:

    shes in elmo’s

  33. yale 08 Says:

If shes in elmo shes a lucky girl. definitely one of the best societies on campus especially in terms of the people.

  34. Otto Says:

It should be alumna because she’s not male (alumnus) not because she’s not plural (alumni or alumnae).

  35. yale09 Says:

    sweet, elmo’s is great.

sidenote: does anyone else notice how weird her eyes are? they are completely black.

  36. psss Says:

    she’s pretty but too pale

  37. Ivy League '07 Says:

I don’t know why her intelligence is in question…isn’t this Yale?

  38. ral Says:
