Toon In, Drop Out: Where’s The Shirt?
When the weather gets warm, two thoughts above all others linger in the Ivy League student's mind: Spring Fling (or whatever variation thereof your particular school may have) and the general desire to leave responsibility behind. Or so one might gather from the frequency with which Ivy League cartoons to voice these sentiments. This week, Brown, Harvard, and Penn obliged the former, while Penn and Princeton did the latter. There were some headscratchers, too; the Prince's Mariah Min continues to baffle with her too-nerdy, too-wordy (albeit well-drawn) cartoons (complete with recurring characters). And we had some pretty decent political cartoons this week, too, about the pope and George Bush. But in keeping with the week's warm weather theme, we have some hilarious stuff for you, just after the jump.
First I'd like to revisit one from last week. I'm not sure we provided a close enough look at our interesting flower-friend... so here ya go:

Daily Princetonian (Wednesday 4/16): Shirtless in Princeton

Various interpretations of this cartoon have been proposed. Some have suggested that, since the weather has shifted rather recently, these poor lost souls must be freshman who haven't yet experienced the sunbather sanctuary that is Princeton in the spring. Others have suggested that these are prospective students whose expecations about Princeton are in the process of being radically overthrown. I was unconvinced as to how this display could anyway defy anyone's expecations; and so I set out with my camera to prove this cartoonist wrong. Here's what I found:

This dude had his legs up mere instants before I took this picture.

Five awesome bros.

This guy is the winner... by far the most hilarious thing I saw today.
Anyway, piecing together these images, I was able discover what must be the source of the characters' incredulity: shirts. But of course! A place full of people laying out in the sun with their shirts on wouldn't be Princeton at all. Well said, Yvon Wang!
Daily Pennsylvanian (Friday 4/11): Some Actual Creativity

Okay, here is a cartoon I can appreciate. Like I've said before, Campus Issues! cartoons are all too often fall backs for tired/lazy/uncreative editors/cartoonists who know they can get a quick laugh from people who don't think too hard about what they read. But here we have some real thought and a real product: a functional (if makeshift) shotglass! I actually used this about 15 seconds ago, and I'm impressed with how well it works. In fact, here's a link to a larger version of the cartoon for those of you who want to print it out and give it a try.
Brown Daily Herald (Thursday 4/17): M.C. Escher Meets Family Circus

This cartoon is boldly Brown in the way it presses the limits of perspective and synesthesia as only something drawn by someone who has repeatedly ingested hallucinogins can do. Now, I feel sort of silly relying on such a lame stereotype, but seriously, this lake looks like the sky. In fact, my roommate is now high and staring "cosmically" (his own words) at this cartoon. Perhaps that is how it was intended to be viewed.

Oh I thought that it was suppose to be a commentary on Brown’s summer camp/hippy nature….

You guys should publish the names of the cartoonists above their cartoons. Many of them are remarkably talented (especially Avery Lawrence, who drew the shot glass cartoon) and, like opinion columnists, they deserve credit for their work.

Seriously IvyGate, where was the coverage of Penn’s Fling? Ludacris, Gym Class Heroes, and OK GO. It was an awesome concert.

noparentswoo deserves recognition.
the girl is hilarious almost always.

So you seriously think Ludacris is something to get excited about? Oh, Penn kids. OK Go is bar far the second most RETARDED name for a band. The first is the “yeah yeah yeahs”.

haha, I thought that the Brown cartoon was supposed to be a comment on how much it rains in Providence and campus just totally floods…
