Hey YDN, Give Barry a Break!
Is the Yale Daily News as pro-Hillary as it is pro-Chinese politburo? A January 14 staff editorial pokes a little too much fun at a recent Obama gaffe, implying that his message of "change" is meaningless:
While campaigning in New Hampshire, Obama's sleepless mind was drifting when he accidentally told a crowd that "the time for come has change." Let's make sure we're a little bit more careful - and, above all, alert to the direction we take in 2008."
A concerned Obama supporter writes in:
YDN editor in chief Andrew Mangino, who writes most of the editorials, has worked for Hillary Clinton. He fails to mention this during his shameless and unjustified Obama-bashing. The spin machine keeps turning."
Way to go on full disclosure, YDN. What do you think, readers? Is YDN editor-in-chief Andrew Mangino in fact a Clinton stooge? Does anyone actually care?
UPDATE: Though Mangino worked for Clinton's Senate re-election campaign, he is reportedly pro-Obama, and the YDN "spin machine" ultimately endorsed Obama. Staff editorials are written by a group of people, not, as our tipster suggests, Mangino alone. We apologize with the force of a thousand sunsets to the good Mr. Mangino, who is neither shameless nor "Obama-bashing." Read more here.

Pretty much every single news outlet has made fun of Obama’s speechwriters’ overuse of “change”. If anything, YDN is just lazy about story ideas.
January 16th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
that’s just a cheap shot. obama is such a smart guy and it is probably one of the few slips he has made. hillary was on good morning america the other morning and said “you know” about fifty times in 2 minutes. she also bashed dr. king-show some respect, hillary! lbj may have signed the paper, but dr. king was the real agent for change. in high school, he went by andrew man-gina.
January 16th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
he’s in the grand strategy class and is kissing everyone’s ass to get into skull and bones. makes sense he would do the same for hillary.
January 16th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
obama is the greatest orator in the race. that’s not to say that we should vote for him for that reason alone. but one slip-up does not make him a bad speaker… if anything it just means he’s been working his ass off, and i appreciate that.
i also gotta say that slick willy clinton has been a huge disappointment, calling obama a “kid”–very disrespectful and very out-of-touch with the young voters the clintons seem so eager to steal away from obama.

Andrew Mangina, for all the YD”N”’s unrivaled self-importance, has again shown himself to be nothing more than a hack journalist with an eye for his resume above all else.
January 16th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
sometimes ivygate and its comments are so idiotic. andrew’s great.
January 16th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Oh, give it a rest, all of you. Andrew Mangino is a far better writer, journalist and all-round human being than those of you who take the opportunity to make juvenile jabs at him on a blog. Also, “Mangina?” Are you two years old?
ALSO, Ivygate, I am fairly certain that he’s an Obama supporter, and that your information is wrong.

Mangino has nice things to say about obama in this interview.
January 16th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Andrew supports Obama, but he tries to be objective. He had a terrible experience working for Hillary, and if the writer of this post did any research, he or she would know that.

this video of ANDREW MAN-GINA will explain the name-

January 16th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
that’s funny-his words are slurred and has trouble remembering what state he’s in. maybe he was drunk when he recorded it
January 16th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
I have a sneaking suspicion that our infantile “HI MY NAME IS ANDREW MAN-GINA” is also the submitter of the erroneous tip that spawned this story.
Good work, Ivygate! You are complicit in character association NOT BASED IN REALITY! Not that it would be the first time…
January 16th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
…and by character association, I mean character assassination. sorry about that.
January 16th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
I’d rather hear a sleep-deprived Obama mispronounce a phrase than Clinton say just about anything no matter how much sleep she’s had because it’s real and not fine-tuned for pollsters, like her choreographed crying.
January 16th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
for the slip-up in the course of your sneaking suspicion, you will incur the wrath of ANDREW MAN-GINA.
After all, he’s the one who advises “let’s make sure we’re a little bit more careful — and, above all, alert to the direction we take in 2008.”
January 16th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
everyone is going at obama because he is that much better than hillary. hillary summary-her husband was a disgrace and she was part of a failed presidency. obama ‘08!
January 16th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
the video of MAN-GINA was taken down by the user. too bad-it was truly riveting.
January 17th, 2008 at 1:23 am
Who cares if he worked for Clinton? I’m tired of the Obama hype by all the left wing news outlets, it’s about time someone gives Hills a little love in the media. How about the NBC reporter who said, “It’s hard to stay objective when covering Obama…” Unbelievable.
I love OBama supporters… “I’m so hip… I’M WHITE AND I’M VOTING FOR A BLACK PERSON!” In reality you’re voting for an inexperienced, empty suit who talks a good game and has become a product of media hype.
January 17th, 2008 at 9:16 am
I just want to emphasize one last time the true extent Ivygate’s folly here. Basically, dear bloggers, you gave an audience to a spurious ad hominem attack without bothering to investigate the matter. A simple discussion with Andrew would have probably sufficed, but instead you merely reprinted the tip. And, as we can see from the comments, given a podium to a truly puerile commenter who will defame him (wrongly) to all of Google etc. You basically allowed a single, incorrect anonymous commenter to set up a “I hate Andrew Mangino!” webpage with a good Pagerank.

Supporting Obama is fine. But why must Obama fanatics swarm the net like Zac Efron crazed teenage girls … its really pathetic guys.
Summary of a general Obama rant:
“Obama rules. Hillary sucks.” (see Obama08 and Obamarules) I know he’s an amazing speaker. At least make this a rational discussion and provide better and meatier rationale for your support than his passionate propensity for hope-laced demagoguery.
January 17th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
obama-head of law review at harvard law school, community organizer in chicago, multi-term state senator, us senator for several years, uniter at each point and consistently displaying sound judgment, not just an amazing speaker but also a leader with a proven record
clinton-failed health care policy in ’90’s, plans for health care policy that is socialized medicine and very expensive, biggest recipient (from either party) of money from drug companies and their lobbies despite claiming to be fighting them, 8 years of planning dinner parties at the white house, 35 years of being bill clinton’s wife, which just shows a profound lack of judgment apart from the iraq war vote and the immigrant id position
wow, that’s a really tough choice now that you mention it!
January 18th, 2008 at 3:55 am
in poly sci we talk about the candidates and i rave about how obama would be a great prez because you know it makes all of us feel tingly to support the black candidate even though i have no black friends. i also think supporting obama benefits my grade because the prof wears a “change.” button to class. but when it comes time to vote i could never vote for him because you know he’s like black.
January 18th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
what you just said is not funny. it’s disgusting that people still utter some bigoted, racist garbage. who cares if a person’s skin is white, brown, or green?
January 18th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
multi-term state senator, us senator for several years, uniter at each point and consistently displaying sound judgment, not just an amazing speaker but also a leader with a proven record
“Proven record”? Is that a joke? Obama has a well-known history of having skipped every even mildly controversial vote as a state legislator.
And isn’t voting someone for being on law review (which Hillary was, too) kinda like putting “middle school valedictorian” on a grad school application?
January 19th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
ur_a_racist: the people who really care what color a person’s skin is are the obama supporters. the vast majority of his supporters are only supporting him because he’s black – THAT is racist. all i’m doing is displaying faux support for an under qualified presidential candidate to gain acceptance from classmates and profs.
January 20th, 2008 at 7:56 am
That logic is horseshit. If Obama’s supporters were “only supporting him because he’s black,” don’t you think a lot of them would have backed Al Sharpton when he was running four years ago? (Anybody recall how many votes he got?) You can make a case that Obama is unqualified, or that his policies are wrong-headed, or that Clinton and Edwards would make better nominees, but it’s lunacy to say that most of his supporters back him purely on the basis of race.
January 20th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
I absolutely agree. Read Nicholas Kristof’s column in today’s NYT-”His [Obama's] seven years in the Illinois State Senate aren’t heavily scrutinized, but he scored significant achievements there: a law to videotape police interrogations in capital cases; an earned income tax credit to fight poverty; an expanision of early childhood education.”
All you Hillary supporters-get your facts straight! Obama is the real deal and you have nothing on him. Why don’t you look into Whitewater, Hillary’s affairs with a lawyer in Arkansas when she was there, and covering up for all of Bill’s indiscretions. You have nothing on Obama and you can’t stand it!
January 27th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Obama wins in South Carolina-take that Clinton stooges!

Can Bones say if Mangino is or will be a Boner?
January 29th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Who thinks Mangino should be an ‘08 Boner?
January 29th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
he’s pretty much obsessed with becoming a Boner, so I vote yes.
January 29th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
he’s got the censorship thing going for him
January 30th, 2008 at 9:30 am
if there are enough IvyGate votes, he gets in. He is and will always be a Boner.
February 7th, 2008 at 11:10 am
I can’t believe this blog’s main readership consists of Ivy League students. If you want to talk about our country’s intellectual decay, look no further than these comment boards.
Mangino is an Obama guy who happens to be fair and critical. He’s one of the most intelligent people you’ll ever meet, and for someone as successful as him at this age, he’s remarkably unpretentious and down-to-earth.
If you are going to insult him, at least be clever. I’ve heard 5-year-olds come up with better insults than this!
