The Anscombe Affair, Part IV: Conservatives Eat Crow
Poor Princeton conservatives! Looks like the leaders of the Anscombe Society, Princeton’s abstinence group, have a bit of apologizing to do to their liberal peers (as do some jerks in the national media). Let’s stroll down memory lane and see if we can recall some of their finer moments as they defended the Talented Mr. Nava:
Professor Robert George on receiving an email threat: “If I were betting, I’d bet next month’s salary that … this is someone who stupidly thinks that no one is entitled to disagree with him, and if they do, that they’ll be intimidated into silence by threatening.”
Okay, Robbie. Will you be making that check out to NARAL or Emily’s List?
Anscombe VP Jonathan Hwang:
This is the worst form of trying to silence opposing views: intimidation and fear. If they were to stop issuing threats and actually come to the table with rational arguments or any intent for civil discourse, we’ll be ready and waiting.”
Who are “they,” Jonathan? Liberals who simply can’t argue things rationally and beat the crap out of people instead? I mean, has that ever actually happened?
After the jump: more outrageous outrage!
Brandon McGinley, a Prince columnist, on the liberal conspiracy to beat the crap out of conservative dissidents:
It is tempting to believe that this is only an isolated incident. It is not. These tactics are part of a pattern designed to silence members of our community who speak out against the hookup culture and sexual liberationist ideology… it is open season on people who defend morally traditional views on our campus.”
What other tactics are you speaking of, Brandon? Concussing yourself so that the other side will look like brown-shirts? Brandon, however, hasn’t apologized for his questionable column – instead he’s talking about “forgive[ing]“ Nava. What about forgiving the liberals, Brandon? They know not their error!
Even the conservative journal First Things – which is now patting itself on the back for its (admittedly) solid investigation of Nava’s self-inflicted beating – couldn’t help but compare the liberal university to the politburos of old:
The incident appears on its face a horrible example of what can happen when anger at those who dissent from campus orthodoxies is permitted to get out of control. A desire to compel conformity caused people to resort to threats and even violence in an effort to silence critics.
There is one thing we have to admit: the Tory, Princeton’s ultra-right magazine, has been remarkably well-behaved. Well done, gentlemen.
UPDATE: Not so fast, Jacob, with the Tory-philia. They’ve since taken down the following blog entry, but I saved it because I’m that kind of person. -HP
No Intimidation
We conservative students need to stand togehter at this time. The assault on Francisco is the most heinous crime I have ever witnessed during my time at Princeton.
I love our school too much to ever believe that it could be a student who commited this act. however, if we as a student body allow this to pass without comment, then we will have given victory to those who seek to silence those who disagree with them. Silence makes us every bit as guilty as those who commited this heinous crime.
Let us please stand together with Francisco, a true martyr to the cause of standing up for what you believe in. To all members of the University community, I will remind you that such an assault on those who express their opinion hurts all of us who might want to express their views.
Long live the 1st Amendment,
Wyatt Yankus
P.s. if you have a problem with what i say, then come and get me.
