George H. W. Bush: One Last Bonesman Bash?
Posted By Maureen O'Connor On December 17, 2007 @ 12:42 pm In Uncategorized | Comments Disabled
An interesting coincidence: The same weekend that George H. W. Bush (Y’48, S&B’4life) dropped by New Haven to receive a Yale alumni award, witnesses saw a truck from the nearby Hamden Rental Center unloading an impressive quantity of tables and chairs at the Skull & Bones tomb. Famously absent from Boner bashes in recent years (last appearance we can confirm was in 1998), all signs point to the 83-year-old Bush Sr. as guest of honor at the Bones’ latest homoerotic leather-daddy Satan-worship, or ritualized flag-burning, or whatever strange and magical things they do in those windowless buildings on High Street.
Obviously, the Bonesmen declined to comment on this story. Also obviously, there are no photos of Bush strolling into the tomb. So instead, at right, Bush frolicking in the streets of New Haven. He appears to be packing a snowball, but actually he is signing a baseball. Because that’s what you do when you’re old, famous, and powerful: sign sports paraphernalia that has absolutely nothing to do with the reason you are famous.
As for that blatant O-face beneath the words “Toad’s Funk,” I think we just got a new sexual euphemism.

uh…not that I’m a huge fan of HW, but do your homework, Ivygate. He was captain of the baseball team as an undergrad.

not only is there a connecting passageway between the so-called Skull and Bones Crypt and Beinecke Rare Books library, but there is also rumored to be an underground pathway between the Skull and Bones Crypt on High St. and the ironically-titled, nearby club “Geronimo.” Supposedly BONESMEN drink there on evenings when they meet because they are not allowed to drink inside. And supposedly a third connection links the crypt to New Haven Water & Sewage Management. Some students hinted that this was for a large aquarium, possibly holding a whale or collection of octopi, but that can’t honestly be true. Though there is an oddly large number of ink suppliers run out of the greater New Haven area. Strange…

it’s true about the aquarium and the water bill. my friend’s roommate is in bones and they apparently have a small whale (called “belly”, so i’m guessing a beluga) in a gigantic tank in the largest room of the tomb.
how else do you explain when the bonesmen all emerge from the tomb drenched from head to toe in water and smelling like fish?

Bill Clinton: George H.W. Bush will help President Hillary
Bill Clinton said former president George H.W. Bush will help fix damage done to America’s reputation by his son, George W. Bush.
ORANGEBURG, South Carolina (CNN) – Former President Bill Clinton said Monday that the first thing his wife Hillary will do when she reaches the White House is dispatch him and his predecessor, President George H.W. Bush, on an around-the-world mission to repair the damage done to America’s reputation by the current president — Bush’s son, George W. Bush.
“Well, the first thing she intends to do, because you can do this without passing a bill, the first thing she intends to do is to send me and former President Bush and a number of other people around the world to tell them that America is open for business and cooperation again,” Clinton said in response to a question from a supporter about what his wife’s “number one priority” would be as president.
A spokesman for the George H.W. Bush was not immediately available to comment on whether the former president would chip in some diplomatic help after his son leaves office next year.
Clinton and the elder Bush, rivals in the 1992 presidential election, have grown chummy in recent years, often traveling and appearing at public events together. In 2005, they started a charity to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Yale University had that ethos, and I did some extra-curricular kind of charitable stuff there, so it’s always been a part of my life, but I really believe it.
Is Skull and Bones considered “some extracurricular kind of charitable stuff?”

Earlier in the evening, Nader addressed several media crews and a small gathering of students in front of the tomb of Skull and Bones. Nader read a statement expressing concern about the “unprecedented situation” in which both major presidential candidates were sworn into the same secret society.
In his speech, Nader focused on the similarities between the two major candidates. For example, he said Kerry’s and Bush’s views had converged on the war on Iraq so that “a vote for Kerry is now a vote for war.”

Don’t be ridiculous. GWB (and probably GHWB as well) have done some patently unethical things, but that doesn’t mean they did them in the name of Skull and Bones, or any other organization. Heck, the post says that Bush Sr. doesn’t like Bones enough to come to most of its events–and Jr. just doesn’t like Yale much, period. Four years of C’s, drunkenness and branding DKE pledges with hangers don’t seem to have left him with many happy memories.

They may not come to the events on campus because people would find out about it and ask them why they still belong to this group.
Fact-GWB had one of his first gatherings in the White House upon taking office with his fellow Bonesmen and appointed several in his Bones ’68 class to positions in his administration (including Roy Austin, Victor Ashe, and Rob McCallum Jr.). He continues to be close to many of his class in the group and drew from earlier classes (Bill Donaldson ’53, John Negroponte ’60) for political appointments.

This group was founded as a WASP offshoot of a German organization for the perpetuation of the WASP elite. The societies of today seem to have become bastions of political correctness in the name of diversity. Why would minority groups even want to belong to this kind of group? Maybe it’s a feeling of prestige or having triumphed over “the Man” and making fun of the old white dudes, but don’t they realize that the founders and Establishment-type members such as Buckley would have looked down on all of them?

also. the over whelming majority of minorities in this secret organization is just another example of how AMERICA’s true citizenry has to give up our inheritance for the sake of diversity.
finally…
question. does the fact that this thing is coed mean that the “bones whore” would be a tranny? just asking. yuck yuck yuck!

Franklin Foer talks about the whole issue of secret societies and diversity in his article, “Tomb of their Own: What’s really wrong with Skull and Bones” in the New Republic in 2000-
“Skull and Bones has democratized-but not in a very productive way. Back when the societies were proudly, offensively elitist, they had a purpose and a paternalistic sense of duty. Bones bragged that it would shape the characters of those who would shape the world. Today, the students in Skull and Bones find that kind of noblesse oblige deeply embarrasing. And, in their efforts to innoculate themselves against charges of elitism, the new elites have directed their energy to less grandiose concerns: namely, themselves. Skull and Bones, once a group for public-minded eletes, has become the exact opposite-group therapy.”
“Beginning in the late ’70s, they swung open their doors to women, gays, and minorities-people anxious to join, if only to proclaim victory over the racist patriarchy. And, once the societies were filled with people of color, white liberals had fewer qualms about joining.”
“The societies, though, have diversified in a strange way. The logical path would have been simply to honor the old, rhetorical commitment to merit-and finally let in Yale’s highest-achieving students of all races and backgrounds. But the rush to diversify wasn’t an effort to finally live out the “best and brightest” creed. It was an escape from that creed, an effort to deny that groups like Skull and Bones represented an elite at all-because, if they did, then no one could rationalize joining.”
“As a result, the dominant criterion for membership has become identity: not what you have done but who you are. Tapping next year’s class often degenerates into an elaborate quota system in which students jostle to make sure they have successors who look like them…And because students are selected as representatives of their identity groups, they have to toe the group line.”
“In fact, the old Bones standbys-the president of the student council, the editor of the Yale Daily News, the head of the Political Union-are rarely tapped by the top societies anymore. They’re considered unseemly social climbers…Bones no longer tries to break down and remake its members for leadership; today it affirms them. Talk to society members and the boast you’ll most frequently hear is that, with their groups, they have created a “safe space,” a place to feel comfortable “sharing your experience.”
“AND, IF THE OLD BONESMEN HAD A RATHER HAUGHTY VIEW OF THEIR OBLIGATION TO THE REST OF THE WORLD, AT LEAST THEY THOUGHT ABOUT IT. FOR ALL THEIR IDEOLOGICAL TRENDINESS, TODAY’S SOCIETIES DON’T DO MUCH IN THE WAY OF COMMUNITY SERVICE OR POLITICAL ACTION. IN FACT, THEY RARELY LEAVE THEIR TOMBS. NOT SURPRISINGLY, OLDER ALUMNI ARE FURIOUS. EVER SINCE SKULL AND BONES WENT COED, MANY OF THE FUSTY OLD WHITE ALUMS HAVE STOPPED ATTENDING REUNIONS OR DONATING CASH. AT WOLF’S HEAD, ALUMNI ACTUALLY CONVENED A TASK FORCE THAT AIMED TO TONE DOWN THE SOCIETY’S FIXATION ON DIVERSITY AND QUASH THE COMPLAINTS ABOUT RACIAL PREFERENCES.”
“THOSE I TALKED WITH TURNED LOGICAL SOMERSAULTS TO JUSTIFY JOINING AN ORGANIZATION THAT THEY HAD PREVIOUSLY CONSIDERED OFFENSIVE. EVEN INSIDE THE TOMB, THEY APPROACH THE RITUALS WITH A DASH OF SELF-LOATHING. THEY MOCK THE SONGS THEY SING, CHANGING THE LYRICS. AND THEY CRACK ABOUT THE “OLD WHITE GUYS.” WHEN I ASKED A MEMBER OF THE CURRENT BONES CLASS IF HE CONSIDERED THE GROUP A COLLECTION OF YALE’S BEST AND BRIGHTEST, HE REPLIED, “I SURE HOPE NOT.”

from what i’m reading, i don’t think it’s really about these people. it’s about the idea of an organization that has a pretty awful history (founding russell family which made its money off drug-running, helping to fund the nazis, etc.) and that has put people in positions of enormous power. considering the history, this is something that people are concerned about. the fact that bush comes back to visit this kind of group, both bushes and kerry won’t talk about it, and everyone tries to let them operate in silence is WRONG.

Russell & Co. merged with the number one US trader, the J. & T.H. Perkins “Boston Concern” in 1829. By the mid-1830s the opium trade had become “the largest commerce of its time in any single commodity, anywhere in the world.”

It must be really disappointing for someone like you to have people examine the facts. Why do you feel the need to spread disinformation? The Nazi room/shrine/whatever you want to call it has been observed by people who have been inside the building and has been written about by reporters. There is a documented connection between Prescott Bush and Nazi financing, so this isn’t that far-fetched. If there is no agenda and everything they talk about is benign, why won’t Bush and Kerry just talk about it? That doesn’t make a lot of sense, now does it?
Alums of the organization, at least for the past 25 years or so, don’t seem to be rising political stars or future presidents-there’s probably are reasons for that-the group is not composed of people selected by merit anymore. What’s beyond me is that no one seems to care that the group has stolen human remains, Nazi connections, etc.
One thing you got right-the next president will not be a Bones alum, which is a great thing. If Obama is elected, there may be a genuine effort to find solutions to genocide in Darfur, global warming, and a slowing economy (even if he is an 11th cousin of Cheney or whatever). He may actually restore honor and dignity to the presidency again instead of someone who conceals their affiliations.

1. Are you fucking serious, guys? Skull and Bones involves a bunch of people sitting around one night a week and talking about their lives. It’s an awesome experience and the tomb rocks, but there’s nothing sinister at all.
2. Bonesmen get money – this is true.
3. It’s a dry society, which is why Bush’s daughter chose not to join.
4. It’s very tradition-conscious, so we don’t tap idiots or meatheads.
5. There are Jews in Skull and Bones. There is no Nazi iconography. Joe Lieberman was tapped, for heaven’s sake. He declined.
6. The whale… how would it have gotten there? How would everyone miss the huge trucks of food being delivered on a regular basis?

to yale08-no one has a beef with your society. many of them are fine organizations. bones is problematic because of its history, stolen possessions, and initiation rituals. would police tase someone if they asked a famous alumni member if they were a member of your society? i don’t think so. your other point is a good one-these might not be bad people, but their organization has a really bad history that is not something to be proud of and you should probably ask them why they are in a group like that.

Confirmation bias is not applicable here. It is not a conspiracy theory when Bush and Kerry deny being in this organization (which is in the public domain). What are they hiding if it’s no big deal? It’s so secret they can’t talk about it…please. What is the evidence to the contrary of this being an organization that employs satanic death cult imagery and rituals? It is documented that human skulls, many possibly stolen, are in the building, as well as reports of a Nazi room on the 2nd floor. Confirmation bias implies there is some counter-evidence-where is yours?

S+B is not a big enough deal at Yale for membership to be a real secret. They ‘re all pretty ostentatious about it anyway. If you ask them they’ll tell you who’s in it. I asked, you’re right, she declined. Some of them have never even met her. The first list on this thread seems right. They’re all facebook friends with each other which seems pretty coincidental considering the different circles they usually run in. That said, it sounds like those you’re trying to convince have already made up their minds.

You want evidence against the idea that Skull and Bones is a conspiracy? I’d like some better evidence in favor of it (besides rumor and word-of-mouth). That said, I can give you plenty of word-of-mouth evidence that S&B, like any society, is a just a group of college seniors who get together for discussion and (albeit weird/slightly silly) rituals (e.g. An old article from a student magazine that gives fairly realistic view of society life: http://www.yale.edu/lt/archives/v8n1/v8n1tombs.htm).
Maybe the reason S&B and the other societies are so secretive is that they enjoy generating the wild speculation and don’t want you to find out just how ordinary their “secrets” really are. I’ll bet that any Bonesmen and -women reading this thread are enjoying every minute of hearing people speculate wildly about Nazi conspiracies, world domination, and (apparently) live pet whales.
By the way, Bush and Kerry don’t “deny,” having been in Skull and Bones. They just don’t discuss what it entailed.

Above two posters are probably both members of Bones. That said, why do you feel the need to be an apologist for an organization that stands for nothing positive or American? Your group was called the Brotherhood of Death. It involves use of satanic imagery, fashions itself a death cult (because of your mortality), and visions of perpetuating its power. Your founder’s money (which probably helped pay for the Tomb) came from drug-running Russell & Co. Your Tomb is filled with stolen objects and human remains, which prove your or your alumni’s blatant disregard for the law. There are eyewitness testimonies of the iconography in your Tomb-not rumor or word-of-mouth-about stolen skulls, bones, and Nazi symbols. Your “evidence” is a three paragraph summary that says nothing to disprove everything else that was said. You should hang your head in shame for being associated with this organization. You’re right-at least for 4 or 8 years, a member of your group will not hold the White House, and America will be better for it. You may think we are all barbarians and you run 5 minutes ahead of us, but in truth you are just pathetic. Get over yourselves.

Hah! Me a Bonesman?
I’m a freshman. I don’t know any current or former Bonesmen. If you knew me, you’d know there’s little to no chance I’d ever be even be considered for secret society membership of any sort. See where your conspiracy-searching is leading you? By your logic, anyone who disagrees with you about the organization must be a Bonesman. You probably won’t even believe this denial.
And if you’ll re-read my post, you’ll see that I was arguing against empowering S&B by believing whispered rumors and silly conspiracy theories, not being a Skull and Bones apologist. Secret societies are created not with the aim of ruling the world but rather with the aim of making their members feel special. People like to be members of exclusive groups, and they like to keep secrets. But this works only if the outsiders CARE. If the outsiders couldn’t care less about your silly rituals, your “exclusive secret society” isn’t going to make you feel very special. That’s why I said that S&B members probably love these conspiracy theories. They make them feel special. Yes, some society rituals may well be meaningless and silly, but what prevents the members from having to confront this fact is hysteria on the part of outsiders. If you think S&B and its silly rituals matter, its members are spared from having to confront the fact that they do not.

ok let’s look at this. so you’re not in bones, but there have been bones members responding to this thread, so it wasn’t an unfair assumption. the truth is this-the other societies don’t have stolen human remains, nazi memorabilia, and a history of satanism, death worship, and funding nazi war effort under prescott bush, george hw bush’s father. that should bother america that the president for the past 7 years and 4 years before clinton was a member of this group and still holds loyalty to it. they ought to explain that to the country instead of saying “it’s so secret they can’t talk about it”-that’s bullshit. they hold/held the highest office in the land and can’t talk about a group they joined in college-the reason is that there is a bad history. to ignore their associations and history is to allow them to operate in the dark, which is what they want. their history should be exposed and held to public scrutiny.

I agree with the above post. While it is probably true that most of what goes on in these societies involves bongs and prostitutes, and therefore is really nothing special, a president should not be allowed grey areas for which (s)he does not have to answer to. Beginning at age 18 all decisions are your own and reflect upon your character. The public has a right to this information before electing a president.

It isn’t crap. At a time when Yale was overwhelmingly very rich, inbred, elitist WASPs (where did they all go?), from the same schools, families, etc. who were already going somewhere it was another thing. They tapped the achievers among a group already destined for great things. Obviously a lot has changed. Sure there will be some successful people but they are at Yale now so chances are… Anyway, no selectivity, no uniformity and no process that improves the individuals (starts senior year)- functionally it is a relic. Take your conspiracy searches to more fertile ground.
