Another catchy tune promoting something you don’t actually do, but maybe would, if life were more like a music video.

Apparently GoCrossCampus, that super complicated internet Ivy League war-game thingee, still exists and is thriving or something. We'd update you on how everyone is doing, but that'd require understanding how it works. Luckily, Kurt Hugo Schneider (the Yalie behind the genius known as "Watch YTV"), has an explanation, and it's in his usual catchy music video form, featuring songstress sweetheart Meg Martinez and yet another pidgin-speaking emasculated Asian male for cheap laughs.

v

I'd question the logic behind the Asian-bash-for-giggles thing (Anger regarding academic competitiveness? Redirected sexual anxieties from overeager college kids?), but that'd be even more complicated than the rules to GoCrossCampus, so, meh. If only GoCrossCampus actually had the power to inspire choreographed fight scenes with musically talented dweeb-chic boys in scenic locations all over campus -- then I'd take the time to figure it out. In the meantime, I'll just watch the movie.

I really think you’re seeing the asian-bashing thing where it really isn’t.

  2. y11 Says:

I was wondering when IvyGate would get this news…

Kurt, you are hilarious. Please keep making videos; they’re pretty much awesome.

  3. i love meg Says:

    meg is so hot

  4. i love i love meg Says:

i love meg is so hot

  5. sam the man Says:

Sam Tsui is so chic and talented! Wow.

  6. y'10 Says:

yalies own, and kurt is ridiculous … in an amazingly good way

  7. @yale'10 Says:

No… this is definitely asian-bashing. “Vely nice”?!?!
In a larger sense, it’s male-bashing, because every guy in the movie looks like a complete idiot at some point (sitting on the toilet with a computer?).
In an even larger sense, it’s woman-bashing too, because that chick is not that attractive and can’t sing well. Also, she doesn’t fight, perpetuating negative, antifeminist stereotypes. :(
In the largest sense of all, it is me-bashing to make it in the first place, and thus imply that it is worth even a little bit of my time.

  8. columbia aaa Says:

Actually, I’m glad Ivygate called out this shit. Yay for racial consciousness.

  9. the girl Says:

    is degrading herself.

  10. doox Says:

simply hilarious! for people who think this is racist you’re either jealous that kurt is way more talented than you or reading into this. btw sam is part asian too and he kicks ass in this video. not racist just amazing.

  11. the girl Says:

would be degrading herself if the video sucked, but this is actually really funny and now i’ve got the song stuck in my head

  12. Y07 Says:

I like how the video initially pretends that both the girl and the guy will be doing the solo hall-grinding, then quickly thinks better of it and sends the guy off to play with the Freestyle Dueling Association. The director knows what makes a good viral video.

Dumbest comment I’ve ever read in my entire life. Reading that was more “me-bashing” than watching this video would ever be. And whoever said meg isn’t attractive and can’t sing well clearly hasn’t gotten any in awhile.

  14. nontoolish 2010er Says:

hey @yale’10. chill the fuck out. it’s not that serious and you sound like a douchebag… just lettin ya know.

  15. yale gal Says:

ok yall need to chill wit that. firstly, the “very nice” is clearly channeling Borat not Asians. Also that is that guy’s real accent and he is a funny kid..why cant an Asian guy do comedy without it being a “bashing?”
Thirdly, Meg Martinez is the most talented, brilliant, gorgeous girl in the Ivy League and if you mess with her youre gonna be on your torso sucking my dick. (because ill have cut your knees off!) this is not women’s and gender study forum. so, let me reiterate, chill wit dat!

  16. @ yale gal Says:

    you have a dick?

  17. Yale Gal Says:

  18. Dobes Says:

Very nice dancing from my fav songstress sweetheart.

  19. y11 Says:

Sam is pretty darn awesome in the vid. Is he in a cappella?

  20. johnleemk Says:

To whoever “noticed” the “vely nice”, that’s not what I heard. The Asian dude’s accent is authentically either Malaysian or Singaporean – he sounds nothing like the Chinese (or any other East Asian) non-English-as-first-language-speakers I know, but his accent has a definite Malaysian or Singaporean flavor. The pronunciation of “masturbation” in the British way seals it (since Malaysian and Singaporean accents have been influenced by their British colonial heritage).

So, back on topic…I don’t think this is Asian-bashing. At the very least, it uses an authentic Asian.

  21. johnleemk Says:

And Facebook proves me right. Wen Yu Ho is a Yale ‘10 from Singapore.

  22. yale '09 Says:

i’m asian and i don’t think this asian bashing? that’s how the guy talks… just because there is an asian in it doesn’t make it asian bashing. but that aside, this is really an incredible video. mad props.

  23. d '10 Says:

impressive video, but a couple of notes:

    1. kurt hugo schneider? why do so many kids in the ivy league find it necessary to use their middle name?
    2. do all yale kids look this unimpressive or is this just a group of computer nerds?
    3. they definitely use some stereotypes here: the ugly dungeons and dragons kid (isnt it unrealistic that he can get laid?). I really can’t imagine that that asian kid legitimately talks like that.
    4. on the chalkboard, reason 4 for playing cross campus is that it gets you laid.
    5. how many homemade videos use the matrix-esque effect? pretty generic

  24. @ d'10 Says:

yes this video is massively impressive, just to respond to a few points
    1. because kurt is badass, if your middle name were hugo you would use it too
    2. i would do sam
    3. wenyu is in my residential college and yea, he talks like that
    4. yea, ur right, that’s pushing it
    5. true, but it’s so good… and this video is so far from generic
probably the best student video i’ve ever seen

  25. @@d'10 Says:

    responding to point #5:

If that’s the case, then I think you need to watch more videos. Get a good visual education. It’s free and on youtube!

  26. dmouth09 Says:

    Speaking of better videos:

    (I’m in it!)

  27. i don't know meg but i love meg Says:

Yowza. She’s awfully durn cute. Kudos to everyone involved.. despite the desire of some to whine endlessly, I thought that was ‘verrry niiice’.

  28. asdfas Says:

am i the only one that thinks this chick’s voice doesn’t match the music in the least bit? why does she keep agreeing to make lameass videos if she really is as cool as everyone says she is??

  29. y'11 Says:

She’s cool because she has a sense of humor. She’s willing to laugh at herself, obviously, or else she wouldn’t participate. Don’t forget that this isn’t, and never intended to be, a serious video.

  30. pierson '10 Says:

great, that’s great.. “this is better than masturbating” lol, i died laughing

  31. lovin it Says:

all you haters just pissed that you can’t make something better and that you haven’t gotten any in a while. sam’s my boy, this video rocks

  32. michael scott Says:

    dundler mifflin

  33. i cant believe this Says:

do any of you have a sense of humor? or did you lose it when you were rejected from yale?

  34. Steve-0 Says:

This is funny. I hope they’re available when it comes time for to produce my ivy league music video: Gamefish Two: Too Game To Fish

  35. wow Says:

did he write the song? and record it? the sound quality is very professional given that’s it’s been through youtube compression. and if kurt wrote this, he has a great feel for catchy melodies. in the credits it gives a guitar player and i guess the singers, did he do all the other instruments himself?

  36. Ivy10 Says:

Interesting video… not great, interesting. The way that all you yalies are all so damn self-congratulatory makes me sick. Calm down, it is not “the best student video.” not by a long shot. And furthermore, the way that the girl kept groping herself during her little singing/slouch-dance routine in the hallway was rather creepy.

  37. Cool-umbia '08 Says:

I agree with Ivy10, it’s gross how all the Yalies are stroking their already too big egos with this. I even liked the video, but I wouldn’t be crapping myself with pride if it were done at Columbia.

And before you all resort to your standard fall back, I sent Yale the rejection letter, not the other way around.

  38. pretty good Says:

agree, but the video wasn’t bad, music was surprisingly well done

  39. random student Says:

I thought that was pretty amusing.

  40. Some Guy Says:

Why do people take Kurt’s videos so seriously? It’s all in good fun. Catchy music, fun videos — I think the kid’s got talent, no matter how much people gripe about this and that. We could all bash each other in this crappy little comment system, but that’s what Go Cross Campus is for!

  41. yale cheats at GXC Says:

Whats with the OCD fruit eating during the sword montage?

  42. how's this for sexist Says:

no one commented on the guy dry humping the doorknob.

  43. Columbia '10 Says:

Sadly, GoCrossCampus isn’t even that great of a procrastination tool. It takes 5 minutes MAX, so if you were hoping to take your mind off of finals and term papers, you’d have been better off with Scrabulous.

  44. Pton 10 Says:

Scrabulous is the way to go. I just watched both of Kurt’s vids, and I like the style, catchiness and, especially, the girl (Meg) in each of them. Keep up the good work you two!

  45. Why the Hate? Says:

Great video! In fact, both of Kurt’s videos are very impressive. I don’t know why so many people feel the need to criticize everything on this blog but let me address a few points. First, there is clearly a lot of musical talent in this video. Second, if you don’t think Meg is attractive, you’re either not attracted to women or you have some sort of fetish she doesn’t fit into. Third, the reason all the Yalies are loving this so much is that Yale, unlike all the other Ivies (except possibly Dartmouth), has school spirit. As a Harvard guy, that’s hard for me to say but it’s true (the only time Harvard students show school pride is one weekend a year when we play Yale in football). Finally, as several others have already said, this is not asian-bashing. It’s a hilarious video in which one of the many actors who are able to laugh at themselves has a strong accent. Well done Kurt, Sam, Meg, and everyone else.

  46. Why the Hate? Says:

PS If you like this, you should check out Kurt’s other video, if only because Meg looks even hotter:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmanRXqfsxY

  47. yale 2010 Says:

meg may be hot, but her voice makes me cringe. hilarious video though, and brilliantly done.

  48. Ah so pc... Says:

Ok, Meg can get a dose whenever she wants, even if she has a sort of oddly operatic sort of singing voice. But why the PC policing? They are making fun of geeks (can you still say that?), science majors, Ivy students, glasses wearers, etc. Now we (or Asians) can’t make fun of Asian guys who may have accents who are science students? Next thing we’ll have to take down all the mock homeboy talk, the ultra yid accent send-ups, the over WASPY types, binge drinking Irish… And where will that get us. To a humorless society where we can only make fun of Mexicans and other people too poor for anyone to give a shizit when their feelings are hurt. My cold, inbred WASP heart needs the warmth that only racially tinged humor can bring.

  49. @ y11 Says:

yeah, sam’s in the duke’s men of yale. more sam magic:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=bEcFjha0ouI

  50. yale 09 Says:

what’s the big deal about kurt’s videos? they aren’t even that funny. and the music, while well-produced, is annoying. (yeah i know i’m not meant to take the video seriously, but that becomes an excuse for anything. .. you didn’t like it? you need to chill out. come on guys, how about calling crap crap?)

it’s blind school spirit that’s keeping up the hype.
