From the Big Red to the Big House: One Dog-Torturer’s Journey

From the Big Red to the Big House: One Dog-Torturer's Journey

Does anyone remember Alexander Atkind, the Cornell student ('06) who last March kicked the shit out of his roommate's dog and then poured bleach on the poor thing? Well, he's finally doing time. On Tuesday, Atkind pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and was sentenced  to 6 months in the Big House.

I know what you're thinking: beating the crap out of a dog named Princess is mad fucked up, but to throw an Ivy League student in jail?  Couldn't they just give him like a zillion years of probation and have his parents pay a fine like they usually do?  You're almost thinking, poor kid.

And then you're like, no.

After the jump: why they should throw away the key.

Exhibit A - The crazy shit he did to the dog.

From the Ithaca Journal:

Atkind admitted to beating Princess, a 30-pound, female Labrador-pit bull mix that belonged to his roommate, and spraying her with a homemade cleaning solution containing bleach on or about March 8. Atkind said he lost his temper because Princess had damaged speakers and wires, but he regretted not taking her to the vet after he injured her.

According to police reports, Princess had a laceration one-inch by two-inches wide, and some of her skull was showing through. A police officer took the dog to the Cornell University Veterinary Hospital for evaluation and was told by the attending veterinarian that the dog suffered chemical burns to her face, eyes, back, groin area and paws."

Exhibit B - Atkind's Andy Bernard-like statement to the police:

This is ridiculous, all because I hit a dog with a stick. I go to Cornell, and this guy's dog chewed my stuff. It doesn't matter, I'll do it again."

And then there's the fact - buried deep in the Cornell Sun article -   that Atkind is already serving time on a drug charge, i.e. another six months won't really make a difference.

Looks like Cornell has found itself a lifer.

thanks for the update! i hope this serves as a lesson to animal haters and all who think they are above the law only because they go to an ivy league school. ridiculous.

  3. @ h '09 Says:

wait? we’re not above the law? Nietzsche was wrong??!?!

  4. ViolentQuaker Says:

Too bad he couldn’t deal with his rage the way most Cornell students do and jump off the gorges.

    …too soon?

didn’t you ever see the movie rope? or hear about leopold and loeb? oh wait, i think those fuckers went to university of chicago. that was probably why they were caught.

I think I remember he was f-ed up on shrooms at the time of the beating. He is truly a disgrace, but there is a little Michael Vick syndrome going on here too, no? I mean, both Vick and Atkind were lambasted by the media and their respective communities and, though they deserved it, perhaps the amount of attention they received != to their crimes, when you keep in mind that there were probably dozens of violent crimes with human victims, in each of their communities, which were committed contemporaneously with their crimes against animals. So though crimes against animals are certainly atrocious, does this not reveal that we have become ridiculously desensitized to crimes against humans? Just sayin’.

I hope the state keeps a good eye on this guy . . . he’s a sick fuck. Tons of people have used mushrooms and narcotics and never lost their temper on a mammal 170 lbs lighter than them. Violence is engrained in his brain and I would be worried for his future nephews/nieces/neighborhood children/etc.

  13. Lynah Faithful Says:

Send him away — and Cornell should never let him back on campus. What if the object of his rage had been a person? His lack of empathy is sociopathic; coupled with his sense of entitlement, the whole matter is disgusting.

Great. A modern-day Raskolnikov. Just what Ithaca was missing since… who? Ruloff?

    Bredweiner….

I’m pretty sure that if a Cornell student beat the fuck out of someone, lacerated her skull, and gave her chemical burns on her paws, er, hands, we’d be hearing about it. Actually, I bet he’d even get kicked out. Even if he didn’t go to Cornell, I think he’d probably go to jail. At least I hope so. I’m just saying. And a labrador mix?! Does this guy hate cuddles and rainbows too? What a cocksucker. Is the dog ok?
