Is Spelman the Black Princeton?

Is Spelman the Black Princeton?

So apparently U.S. News & World Report has thrown in the towel when it comes to reporting news items that AREN'T gimmicky lists of colleges generated from statistical trivia. Following the lead of such pioneers of capitalism as Blackula and Black Caesar, U.S. News & World Report is proud to present America with another overhyped, arbitrary list: "America's Best Black Colleges."

According to the press release, this list "closely resembles that of of U.S.News & World Report's annual "America's Best Colleges" rankings." No shit -- you could almost say it's the exact same thing, just tailored to a specific minority in order to make more money.

Here are the top five colleges:

1.  Spelman College (Atlanta, GA)

2.  Howard University (Washington, DC)

3.  Hampton University (Hampton, VA)

4.  Morehouse College (Atlanta, GA)

5.  Fisk University (Nashville, TN)

I guess Howard University, 1st in prestige but 2nd in thist list, really is the "black Harvard." We are eagerly awaiting the list of America's best Jewish colleges.

After the jump -- IvyGate selflessly, courageously violates yet another USN&WR "embargo" (you guys might want to stop sending us these, btw).

How about the best Asian colleges? Er… I guess that would the same as the best Jewish colleges. My bad.

  2. Columbia '09er Says:

Well, since Spelman is a women’s college I guess it would be more appropriate to call it the black Wellesley ( or black Radcliffe).

As for the best Jewish college, my vote goes to the University of Pennsylvania.

  3. Don't you mean Says:

    the Jewniversity of Pennsylasia?

  4. Columbia 08 Says:

Why have I always believed that Morehouse more prestigious than Howard? Why do I even care?

  5. Columbia '09er Says:

@ Columbia ‘08: probably because MLK Jr. went to Morehouse College, that’s why.

US News sucks, they got it all wrong. Sadly, Spelman, Fisk, Miles and Claflin are the only schools out of the 37 where people actually graduate.

Liked the ranking’s, but can’t understand why Spelman College is number 1.
Howard University hands down has way more prestige. Just take a look at there alumni list on Wikipedia. Than compare it to Spelman’s, Morehouse’s and Hampton’s alumni list. No comparison !!!

Who cares jsut go to school where you like, no one calls Harvard or Princeton America’s top white schools or majority schools do they? They’re all just schools despite the ratings so go to a majority school (mostly white) or a minority school (mostly minority) thats your decision

I believe this list is just an answer to critics who believe that USNWR is biased against black colleges because of the criteria used to rate the colleges. Black colleges usually rate poorly in the areas that USNWR uses for its rankings. So instead of revising the criteria, they just created a separate list. Whoopdeedoo. This is why you won’t see a list of best Jewish colleges, Asian, colleges, or even women’s colleges.

HBCU’s Historically black colleges & universities were created because other institutions( ex.U penn, Harvard, NYU) would not allow blacks entrance for education. This is not to say other minorities or should I say disenfranchised Americans were not allowed to attend HBCU’s but their primary focus was on educating a group of people that were not allowed to learn how to read and write for 400 years.

This is why they are/were called Black schools.

Jews didn’t need to have their own school because they were considered white by American standards and not oppressed in the US(Jews actually owned plantations in the south). So contrary to what some may believe Jews are not an ethnic minority in the US, they are white and have had all the benefits of being white in America.

Asians were allowed to attend colleges as the did not suffer under the same type of oppression. This is not to say they were not oppressed, but they were not under the trappings of slavery, and thus assimilated into White America more easily(this changed after the pearl harbor)

HBCU’s still have relevance today. The provide an opportunity to be educated in a surrounding where your race is not an issue, and receive a top notch education. Which is what most white institutions tend to offer for it’s white students but it’s just not put on the brochure.

    just the facts!
