Apparently Third Eye Blind Still Exists, Is Popular

Spring concerts might be the best investments colleges make. The year’s almost over, students are sick of school, and, in the heat of studying for exams, it’s easy to think the administration just doesn’t give a damn. But then they drop a thick wad on a sweet concert and, as you sway gently to Ben Folds’ lilting piano, you realize you had it all wrong-someone really does care.
Usually, that is. In some cases, however, the student selection committee botches it so bad that the concert can actually ruin an otherwise great spring.
We did a quick survey to see which schools booked which bands to perform at their spring concerts. The results are, frankly, stunning:
Brown – The Flaming Lips, Soulive, The Roots, Stardeath and White Dwarfs, Misson of Burma, Yo La Tengo
Cornell – T.I., TV on the Radio
Columbia – Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Blackalicious
Dartmouth – Third Eye Blind
Harvard – Third Eye Blind
Penn – Ben Folds, Third Eye Blind
Princeton – Third Eye Blind
Yale – T.I., Sister Hazel
Seriously?! How has Third Eye Blind suddenly become the hottest ticket on the Ivy circuit? Did Chumbawumba, the New Radicals, and Deep Blue Something all have bar mitzvahs booked up?
Brown clearly takes the prize for best lineup. (It’s hard to compete with an entire college of future East Village concert promoters.) Columbia, which has a history of booking outstanding rap artists (and Naughty By Nature), puts up a good showing, too. (Although Del, whose best song opens with the line “It’s important to practice good hygiene,” might have been a better fit for Brown.) We’re also impressed Yale and Cornell both have T.I. lined up, even after The King walked off stage during a recent concert at Duke. Watch some dweebish Yalie try to correct his grammar: “Excuse me, Mr. I., it’s who I am.”

I was going to say something about not all Yalies being dweebs, but there’s actually a movement for everybody to bring their TI-83s and wave them in the air as T.I. comes on stage, so I think I just countered my own point.

I used to critique what bands Cornell booked for Slope Day … till I left the loving embrace of the ivy leagues for grad school … and Univ. of Texas booked Little Richard for our spring concert. Though, god bless them, it’s an improvement over when they booked Ryan Cabrerra last year. Though for the difference in tuition, T.I. would have to wash my sweaty jock to make all things equal.

Third Eye Blind played at Princeton in 2003, also. And they didn’t even play “Semi-Charmed Life,” despite it being one of the few songs anybody knew.

The sad thing is, the students actually voted at Dartmouth to bring 3EB. It was when the result was announced that I realized the majority of Dartmouth students are actually 13 year old girls.

One main reason Cornell didn’t get Third Eye Blind AGAIN — there would probably be a riot. 3EB played here in September ’05 and that was lame enough… It’s too bad more schools didn’t book Yo La Tengo.

hey can we get credit for having the roots last term, and talib kweli and robert randolph last year? and can we pretend that jackass who actually likes g.love isn’t my fellow student? he is apparently ignoring the fact that the 08s voted for robin thicke over 3eb…

3eb really was the best choice on the list that the Programming Board sent out. It was really sad. I ended up voting for them, but I knew right then that I probably wouldn’t go. Especially now that tickets are 20 bucks. Yeah, right.
For me, the Programming Board peaked in the fall of my freshman year, when they got Lewis Black to perform. He was fucking awesome.

Midterm Depression really sets in when your school is judged by the skeezy geezer wannabe alt rockers who are playing at your big termly concert.
But it seems that you’ve over looked Dartmouth’s wee lil’ org FNR. Friday Night Rock brings in some kickass bands into smaller campus venues. Girl Talk and Professor Murder will be here next month. FNR has booked Of Montreal, Sunset Rubdown, Chromeo, Ted Leo, Holy Fuck, Japanther, and a shitton of more awesome (and sometimes obscure) bands in the past and continues to bring in amazing talent with an itsy bitsy budget and a very small campus following.
…so PB can’t complain about audience size or funding. They just straight up suck. Speaking of which, anybody ever notice that ‘semi charmed kind of life’ is about blow jobs and the like? no?
“Her own motivation
She comes round and she goes down on me
And I make her smile”
at least it’s consensual.

“an entire college of future East Village concert promoters”
It’s true, we’re all out here stoking the star-making machinery behind the popular song. I don’t assign any real significance to the fact that I’ve never heard of a single one of the bands in the entire list.
For MY Spring Weekend, we had the Young Rascals, Shangri-Las, and Peter, Paul, and Mary. Two years later Ira Magaziner pulled in Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Gordon lightfoot, Janis Joplin, Carlos Montoya, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. His health-care system would have taken care of Third Eye Blind.

Yeah, Columbia does have an affinity for rappers. But the concerts they put on were definitely hot. And they left out Wyclef, Kanye, and Common.
On a smaller note, Columbia had Ben Folds sophomore year.

On the Dartmouth shows being discussed:
1) The Roots show a couple years ago was awful. The gym has shitty acoustics, and the bad seemed bored of playing yet another show before rich white kids. Total disappointment.
2) The Lewis Black show put me to sleep. For realsies. The same shtick as he does on the daily Show, with a couple of curses thrown in to let us know he’s sweeeeter than the Boom-Boom logs.
3) The best shows I’ve seen have been the cover bands that the frats pull in (The Beatles one at AD, the Stones one that played a Green key at Phi Delt, and the Aerosmith one at Psi U). Everyone can drink in peace and party to the live music as they want to, without the hassle of tickets or the gym or S&S. More intimate venue has allowed for a better, cooler atmosphere…while I bet Third Eye Blind will be OK in the gigantic gymnasium, it would be amazing to get that band in a frat living room.

it’s amusing that Friday Nite Rock pulls such infinitely better bands than Programming board for literally .00001x the money. Bishop Allen, bang camaro, filligar, the dirty projectors, +/-, enon, this term ALONE, were all awesome, all for free with complimentary beer and snacks. and what about ted leo, of montreal, the mountain goats, etc. the last few years? i mean. jesus.
it seriously doesn’t even compare to, say, the roots concert in the GYMNASIUM with shitty acoustics or $20/ticket 3EB for those people who never graduated from middle school or, dear god, vanessa carlton.

Where’d you find out that Third Eye Blind is doing the Princeton concert? According to the Prince, our Lawnparties is being headed by Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish (although it’s the same time warp to 1998). And according to their website, TEB probably won’t be doing the Dean’s Date concert because they’ll be in “Wantaugh, NY.”

The USG lawnparties band is different than the USG Spring Concert. Last year, Guster was the Spring Concert and Ghostface Killah was the lawnparties band. The lawnparties band is always partly funded by Alcohol Initiative.
I wish we hadn’t gotten TEB again. I hear they were terrible the last time they were here, and I’d much rather see Brown or Cornell’s bands.

Incidentally, I don’t understand the whole concert on Dean’s Date thing. I’m always exhausted from writing papers and badly in need of a nap before (sometimes) going out and getting shitfaced. For the last few semesters I’ve had an exam the day after Dean’s Date. Fucking USG.

Penn’s SPECTRUM got Juelz Santana for their show this spring, tho it is not on campus.
I’ve seen Flaming Lips a ton and it’s a great visual show, but Wayne Coyne’s voice suffers live.
I saw Third Eye Blind last year at Villanova and it was one of the most energetic shows I’ve ever seen. I’m not even a huge fan of “Semi-Charmed Life”, but I bet most of the people trashing them have not listened to their third album, Out of the Vein.
There is discussion that Penn is getting Jimi Hendrix for next year . . .

I love how D07 keeps ripping on Third Eye Blind despite the fact the tickets are selling like crazy. Who the hell cares about noisy, unheard-of garage bands like “Camaro” and “flaming lips” (what a fucking stupid name).

Seems like Dartmouth’s Friday Night Rock is similar to Princeton’s Terrace F. Club, a good alternative to what the school itself is bringing. This semester we’ve gotten Girl Talk, Menomena, Battles, Land of Talk, Matt and Kim, Oakley Hall, O’Death, and more, and will be having They Might Be Giants this Sunday.
Anyway, I am also wondering where you heard that 3EB is playing Princeton. I actually think their first cd is pretty great, so I wouldn’t mind seeing them, but I have heard from a reliable source that we are having a female one-hit wonder from the 80′s…

Note that living in NYC means we don’t have to buy anyone to come play at our school for free (but we do anyways). EVERYONE has concerts at madison square, hammerstein ballroom, webster hall, brooklyn clubs, the village, etc.

3eb show was surprisingly good last night. they played most of their old songs. guitarist was beat though.
phi delt had motet last week, that was the best performance i’ve seen in a long time.
and the roots kick ass.

bottom line here people:
brown put together the show you all wish you were at. the line up was stellar, the venues were tight, and the people from providence didn’t use the same name that was common currency for the rest of the ivy league this spring.
while you argue if third eye blinds still got cred, consider how tepid and hackneyed their music has become. for people who want to live in the “here and now” music world not the music of “now that’s what I call music” head to providence.
next year, skip your local springfest and hit up brown’s.

For all you haters, cornell has undoubtedly the best music scene in the ivys. whether you are a rock snob, emo whiner, pseudo gangsta hip-hopper, 90s throw-backer, or pretentious hipster, cornell has brought at least one artist you like.
in my 3 years so far at cornell, the cornell concert commission, slope day programming board, and the fan club collective have brought the following bands: T.I, TV on the Radio, Catch 22, Arcade Fire, All American Rejects, Ok Go, The Whigs, Lupe Fiasco, Twista, Trey Anastsasio, the Strokes, Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, Third Eye Blind, Lifehouse, Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday, Ben Folds, Talib Kwelli, Motion City Soundtrack, Girl Talk, Professor Murder, Art Brut, Tokyo Police Club, Brightback Morninglight, Pedro the Lion, The Fiery Furnaces, Asobi Seksu, Dashboard Confessional, Reel Big Fish, Mos Def, Common, Snoop Dogg, The Game, They Might Be Giants, Ben Lee, Akron/Family, Tilly and the Wall, The Mountain Goats, Wolf Eyes, The Boy Least Likely To, the Hold Steady Steady, The Walkmen, of Montreal, the French Kicks, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Matt Pond PA, the Secret Machines, Hidden Cameras, Chin Up Chin Up.
Please, someone try to top this. or else, enuff said.
hail all hail cornell.

redacted — I’m not sure about the other schools, but at Cornell our big spring concert, Slope Day, is funded by the University/the student activity fee which is bundled with tuition, so there isn’t actually any charge to students to go; students can purchase extra tickets and can pay for food/beer on the Slope… Cornell also has a ton of other concerts throughout the year, through the Concert Commission (usually almost $20) and Fanclub Collective (usually about $5).
wow — Cornell does not fucking suck, if you’re a Cornell student and you think that, please find some new friends or change majors or something
cornellfuckingrox — holla!! I’m from a big city and the music scene is actually much better, and much cheaper, above Cayuga. Except for that one creepy older man that stands right in front at all the Fanclub shows….
