Matt Sanchez: Don’t Ask, Don’t Ask
U.S. Marine Cpl. Matt Sanchez has been something of a celebrity at Columbia for over a year now. The 36-year-old junior first drew attention when he filed a harassment complaint against three students from the International Socialist Organization, who he said were taunting him for being a minority in the military. When the administration didn't take any action, Sanchez turned to the embrace of FOX News and the New York Post. And since then, he's been the darling of O'Reilly, Hannity & Colmes, and even Ann Coulter -- whose recent use of the word "faggot" came at a conference at which Sanchez was honored. Basically, Sanchez has been the conservative commentators' great right hope, a pillar of martial strength on Columbia's pinko campus. (Pics of him with Newt Gingrich and Hannity after the jump.)
In the past 24 hours, though, the Iraq War vet marine has hit every corner of the internets, ever since news emerged that he is also a veteran of something else: gay porn. (Yes, we know what you're thinking: he has most likely tested both kinds of Arabian goggles.)
But while the schadenstorm revs up, ready to lump Sanchez in with Jeff Gannon and Ted Haggard, it seems like the only person taking more pleasure than liberals in Sanchez's "outing" is Sanchez himself. "Thanks for some of the feedback people," he wrote the guy at Joe.My.God., the blog that appears to have broken this thing wide open. "I'll actually be doing a book on how my life changed (for the better)." That's real equanimity for someone whose schlong has gotten so much attention it could start its own MySpace page. (Obligatory caption to the photo above: "I'm telling you, it's this long.") He even indulged a little e-mail banter with us:
IvyGate: So we're wondering how you're weathering this whole thing. Do you think you'll be sticking around Columbia?
Sanchez: Oh hey. I'm weathering and of course I'll continue to go to Columbia. Geez, you're a bit dramatic. I have an op-ed scheduled for Salon.com tomorrow and I'm negotiating with a couple of newspapers. Also, there's going to be a big announcement on Columbia's policy toward the military. Stay tuned.
IvyGate: Well, you seem to be handling this mighty well. We'll certainly read up in Salon. Meantime, do you know who identified the photos in the first place, or how word got out?
Sanchez: I've been getting fun mail for quite some time. Death threats and that sort of crap. I'm not an attention monger (really!!!) but I'm not going to back down and let these people "tell the story" So, I'm working on [an] Op-Ed piece for Salon and they said they'd post it by tomorrow. Good luck on your finals.
IvyGate: Last indulgent question, I promise (and I ask it because I have to): Did you have anything to do with the pictures getting out? I'm not saying this is necessarily convenient for you, but it certainly won't be hurting your book prospects. Thanks, and best of luck on your exams, too.
Sanchez: LOL, no I didn't have anything to do with the pics getting out. This whole issue is silly. What exactly are people accusing me of? I'm not sure. I am fairly straight forward and direct. Most who know me, know that. :)
So the guy's playing it straight, so to speak. And Lord knows turning this revelation from a sad triumph in the partisan gotcha game into a tale of struggle and redemption will make the book and movie (if he hasn't made that already) inevitable.

Is this going to be another ex-gay story? The email from Austin B. on the Malkin website seems to hint that it may be another one of those scenarios–I’m referring to the part where he says something to the effect of, “his past in no way reflects who he is today”.
In any case, I hope the Marines do not discharge him. He seems to love the Marines, and frankly the military needs to take whoever it can get these days. They’re lucky to have had an intelligent guy like Sanchez.

A week and a half after Matt Sanchez made his (false) public accusation that members of the International Socialist Organization had used attacked and used racial slurs against him, a member of the ISO received an anonymously mailed packet with personal information about him – the same that’s just been revealed, including pictures. An accompanying letter included some anti-gay language. She told no one – not even me, a fellow member, at the time. In her view, mine also, it would have been a violation of privacy, and pandering to homophobia.
We have no evidence who sent the packet. It could have been some deluded wannabe-ally, or it could have been a right-winger trying to trap us into giving a boost to Sanchez’ (ridiculous) self-presentation as a victim.
Now that the info has become public anyway, we want to let people know this happened. This piece of extreme shadiness is better exposed to the light of day…

Lol. You guys must be joking. This is a sad story all the way around. The whole “this guy wants this” bit is more than a little tired. Just because he is showing strength, and not letting you define him that does not mean he “asked for it”. There is an element of penis envy in all of this that is also rather odd.
I happen to believe that the guys from ISO made insensitive racial comments demeaning to him. Not a doubt in my mind. You guys created this monster. The idea that he had this planned is laughable. Maybe if you stop calling Veterans names, and end the policy of sanctioned discrimination against our armed forces on your campus, this kind of thing will not happen again?
If the Veterans at Columbia do not feel discriminated against and harassed on the campus, then why have so many of them come together to say so? Why have they formed a non political organization to cope with the hatred they receive? Let me guess, guys who have had their legs blown off in combat are just over sensitive. You guys are just plain mean spirited and confused.

End the war- He is not out of the military. And he is a Marine, not a soldier. He may not have broken any orders or regulations with his past activity. Not a sure thing that they will throw him out.
He still denies he is gay to the press. Not only that, legally, none of his superiors can ask him if he is gay. Reality addled liberals… ah, so much fun and confusion.

calm down little children….this isn’t a debate over the war and you do not need to be a war veteran to express your opinion, PTC. No matter which series of events is the real one, this story is undeniably entertaining.I wonder if Ann Coulter and Newt (we’re on a fist name only basis) will be so eager to cozy up with him again. Who knows…I obviously don’t have enough of a grasp on reality to judge for myself.

Reality- It is an interesting story. I agree. So many angles to it. I never said you needed to be a Veteran to express your opinion about the war…but if you are going to declare “I’d hate to fight next to this guy”… then you should be able to back it up with some service and experience. This is the absolute worst insult you could throw at a person in the military, and if you cannot back it up with some service,you have no credo to throw it out there. None.
And reality, if you are going to infer that the members of our armed forces rapists and murderers, expect to be called on it.

Not all liberals are reality addled. I am a liberal. I do not consider myself to be reality addled. The opinion expressed (Veterans are muderers, rapists) led me to use that term. If you do not agree that those who go for the whole “baby killer” label are reality addled, and worthy of an honest debate… your opinion. That has nothing to do with the gay conservative element of this case.

this is a criminal act he is flaunting. Not only was he committing a crime working as a male prostitute,but i would think it would interesting to know how he reports all this prostitution money on his income tax returns while being in the military as well. should the US tax payers be paying him a military pension if he was working as a male hooker at the same time…….i don’t think so.
