BDH: Brown Lacrosse Wooing Duke Rape Defendant
Whoa, today's Brown Daily Herald has a major scoop: Brown is actively recruiting Reade Seligmann, one of the three Duke rape case defendants, to transfer and play for its lacrosse team. That's it, basically -- no other details, besides Coach Lars Tiffany saying Seligmann likes Brown, and Brown likes him likes him back. We'll hold the editorial comments as we get ready to visit Durham this weekend, but obvs, this is a huge vote of confidence in Seligmann's innocence. Anyone at Duke or Brown have more info?

You’re gonna get shit for that “obvs”. I personally don’t care either way, but you know how vicious blog-commenters can get.

this news has been floating around Brown for a couple of weeks now (or at least amongst athletes). And Seligmann has always had the most concrete defense/alibi, for what it’s worth

yeah… specifically the fact that he is a privileged white male, and she was a poor black stripper, and therefore he couldn’t have done it, right? RIGHT?

No, you twit. It’s not that he couldn’t have done it. It’s that if he *had* done it, it wouldn’t be rape.

Perhaps the problem is with the accusers story. When the accuser ID’d Reade she said he forced her to have oral sex and spit out the results on the floor. When there was no DNA to back up her story she changed the story to Reade just watched. Kind of a pretty big change in recollection. Also, she just couldn’t be sure she was technically raped any more which is why the rape charges were dropped. She also changed her timeline so that the rape happened earlier to not fit Reade’s alibi. Course that story also has problems with fitting the other evidence. So, who knows what the next version of the tale will be.

by concrete defense I mean that his defense has provided both cell phone and ATM records showing that he wasn’t even at the party during the accuser’s original time frame

Classy, Brown. Even if this guy did not commit assault, he is hardly a model citizen – drinking underage, hiring strippers, shouting racial slurs. There may not be enough evidence to find him guilty of assault, but the guy is still an asshole.

This is an embarrassment. Innocent or not, this guy is a racist asshole as D 06 said. Brown should be ashamed. I am ashamed. Brown doesn’t give a shit about its reputation and values crap like sports over decency. They shouldn’t touch anything from Duke/the lax scandal.

“drinking underage, hiring strippers, shouting racial slurs… the guy is still an asshole”
Do you guys have any friends on a sports team? I agree that Brown probably shouldn’t touch this guy just on the basis of bad publicity, but please don’t try and kid yourself that our jocks are somehow better than their jocks.

Y’03 knows all about the bad publicity/fall-out at Yale when they admitted Hashemi (the Taliban guy). Only Brown would do something this idiotic w/an alleged rapist and absolute racist, stripper-hiring, drunk like Seligmann.

So getting drunk and hiring a stripper is grounds for not being allowed to attend a college? Nobody has accused him specifically of yelling racial slurs…is being at a party where a racial slur was shouted grounds to not let somebody into college? These admissions officers better start getting better intel of these are the criteria. Bottom line is that within a month all of these charges will be dropped as the accusers story has been disproven with concrete evidence 3 times already and once that occurs he should be allowed to attend any college for which he would otherwise have been qualified to attend.

Seligmann has not been accused of drinking underage, hiring strippers, or shouting racial slurs. The second stripper admits having use a racial slur to initiate the verbal exchange that took place after the dancer’s performance. A neighbor alleges one of the the Duke players reacted to the racial slurs by saying the stripper’s ancestors picked the cotton theat went into making his shirt. By that time, Seligmann had already left the party.

I actually met Reade when he came here about a week ago. He was very nice, mature, and handled himself very well. He said that the two schools he is looking at are Brown (obviously) and Harvard, where apparently he would play football but not lacrosse.
