I’m not making a judgment on the validity of her case, but I’m just wondering why she’s suing Yale and not Schlessinger.

If he cures cancer, the pharmacologist industries of the world will lose $trillions and they will give him the “Fuck You” in no uncertain terms.

A friend of mine was in his lab as a phd student, and she left. She told me that Schlessinger regularly harrassed the women in his department, and the women had to take it because this is the kind of guy who could AND WOULD break your career if you filed a complaint against him. Schlessinger is a really big name professor (that’s why he was brought to Yale), and I’d be really surprised if any of the women students/post-docs/professors would say anything agaist him…. sure a secratary, or a lab tech would, but that’s differnt.

if you’re a big name prof at yale you can do whatever the fuck you want and no one can/will do anything.

You mention the Dan David Prize which he got for his (claimed) cancer drug development. This is not supported by the literature. The critical work that led to SUTENT was done by others – he has hijacked the credit for this work. This behaviour is consistent with that reported in this issue of Ivygate. He thinks he can get away with everything!

Stand strong Mary Beth Garceau! This is definitely Schlessinger’s MO. He actually refers to himself as God and definitely feels that he is so powerful that he can do whatever he wants. He also stole more than just the credit for SUTENT. A district court judge recently ruled that Schlessinger hijacked the idea for Erbitux from his former colleagues at Weizmann and ImClone has now lost the patent as a result. Seriously, you guys act like this has never happened before. The woman was just brave enough to sue the bastard. For some reason(probably the vast grant money these guys bring in) the science departments here are just notorious for sweeping male, chauvinistic behaviors under the rug. A friend of mine told me a story of another big-named prof harrassing a female postdoc to the point where she actually got a restraining order against him so he can’t come on her floor when she was in the vicinity.

There are plenty of other people working on curing cancer who aren’t overtly sexually harassing their assistants and stealing patent ideas from their colleauges. I’m guessing the only reason he came crawling to Yale from the pharmaceutical industry was because ImClone / Sanofi-aventis probably booted him out when they lost the lawsuit and found out that he stole the idea of an antibidy/chemotherapy combuination. Did Yale University not care about this when they did their background check?
