A Comment on Comments

yeah, this post was a great ideaHey kiddos,

It's about time we sat down and had a talk. About commenting.

We want to hear from you. That's why we have a comments section. Call us dreamers, but at launch we pictured it as a place for Ivy smartasses to shine. But lately ... well, maybe it's best to point to this recent Churchillian battle of wits, from an item about a rap song:

Brown kid says:
Cornell sucks, I say we purge them from the ivy league

Harvard2007 says:
Yale sucks, Whatev...

Bravo, really. Do you guys intern at Aaron Sorkin's dialogue shop?

Yeah, okay, this is the Internet, and that's par for the anonymous course. And yeah, we ain't writing Shakespeare ourselves, neither. (Please never visit our ghastly July archives.) But it kills us that a lot of people are posting awesome comments, and getting lost in a sea of "ahahha says: Cornell is the worst ivy hahaha, better than brown and dartmouth, hahahahahhaha."

So: By all means, be tasteless, be destructive, be vitriolic. Tear our ill-argued screeds to shreds. Just don't be Fred.

For the record, we reserve the right to remove any comment that's derogatory or patently offensive. (If you're that uninspired, go here.) And we're gonna try to comment more frequently ourselves, so it's not just one-way yelling.

In conclusion, we're not angry. Just disappointed. We're die-hard behaviorists around here; we believe in positive reinforcement. That's why we want to start giving brilliance its due with a new comments round-up at the end of every week. So go -- sharpen your skewers, and prove those acceptance letters were deserved.

Fred’s comments was pretty ridic, but did you see GSAM Assoc’s comment further down? What a douche bag. Tell you what I would do if I interviewed GSAM Assoc (sweet blog name by the way, was Douchy McFuckstick taken?) for a job, I would pull out his resume and deuce deuce on it. Maths is for losers, and douche bag brits.

It is sad to see that there are pathetic posters out there who have nothing better to do but belittle or harp on the poster above them or to simple reply with small comments versus actually taking it a set further and showing exactly what education can do for you. The saddest being that the most colorful comments had to be on Aleksy Vayner.

  4. 09yalie Says:

acting like a sixth grade english teacher to your readers is a sure-fire way to alienate them. don’t write posts like this again.

  5. Christopher Says:

Commenting on commenters was neither interesting nor funny when the “New” Gawker started doing it a few months ago–which is where I’m assuming you Viswanathan’d this idea from. Why post about something that is readily available for viewing on your own blog? It’s pointless and this meta shit is getting out of control. Please, for our sake, do not further blur the line that separates you from your unresearched, not-even-worth-my-procrastination-time rival, IvyLeak. Stick to original material and news gathering.

  6. Anonymous Says:

Guys, give us a break. You are “disappointed”? You are “not angry”(thank goodness!!)? What kind of sanctimonious, egotistical crap is this? Just because you write the content of this blog, doesn’t mean you should be the ones deciding/dictating/even suggesting what the nature of the responses to that content should be. The comments section should be for READERS to decide how to respond to a given post, not for the bloggers to sanctimoniously dictate what the tone/nature of responses should be. Your childish desire to “control” how people respond to your posts — and your belief that it should be your right to do so — borders on the absurd. It relaly seems like the popularity of this blog has gone to your head and you guys have started taking yourselves way way too seriously.

  7. Anonymous Says:

Your slightly self-mocking graphic gets to the heart of the problem with your post — you *aren’t* our teachers/supervisors/mommies etc., and your presumption in telling us how to behave is ridiculous. We are consumers of your product, and we’ll react to it however we damn well please.

  8. A different anonymous Says:

    Anonymous has a point.

However, I think the issue may be even simpler than that. I think you lack truly juicy, controversial, scandalous topics to pique people’s interest.

Aleksey Vayner made you. His story was funny as hell on so many levels, it snugly fit its own niche, and you covered it better than all others – discovering new layer upon layer of entertainment. And people’s reaction to it where varied and forceful enough to make the comments section a great read.

But since then, I for one struggle to care much for the other posts. People drink at Brown? Good for them. Ivy basketball sucks? Anyone with a pulse knows that.

I actually think that given the dearth of real subjects, you have too many posts. Stop spamming and DIG UP SOME REAL DIRT.

  10. cornellrules Says:

people who comment on comments suck….kinda like your mom did last night!

ps what is the color of shit?….

  11. ... Says:

NO wonder you go to Cornell, that comment is pretty much the reason why kids like Brown kid should continue to comment.

ps. who goes to a safety school…

  12. columbia2010er Says:

Hahahahaha. I nearly died of boredom until I saw Brown and Cornell comment-fight. IvyGate, why would you discourage this? It’s entertaining to watch. Kind of like watching two Paralympic wheelchair fencers go at it.

  13. brown poo Says:

    please, brown person…

it’s actually “no WONDER” … you put the stress in the wrong place.

By the way, Cornell owns brown in pretty much every ranking out there – and everybody knows that!

  14. Columbia08 Says:

columbia2010er – shut the fuck up, freshman.

  15. Richter is a sieve Says:

I think it’s about time you guys posted something along these lines. As a long-time reader, I think the Aleksey Vayner coverage was awesome, but it brought in some dickwad commenters and it’s annoying to see every discussion turn into “Cornell is a safety school!!!!!!!!!!” or “Aleksey killed my first born”

  16. CU Says:

“As a long-time reader, I think the Aleksey Vayner coverage was awesome”

I agree, this site was clearly the best source for anything Vayner – though this can also be extended to most anything else going on around the ivy league (except for the ‘real’ news – hence newspapers). It’s a shame to see the ‘comments’ sections just turn into flame wars rather than a discussion on the topic.

  17. hangover, usa Says:

Anonymous, stop being a twat. You are everything that is wrong with the Ivy League. Grow a set and shut your fucking mouth.

  18. Hey there Says:

Since this a blog about the Ivys, the assumption is most people here go/went to an Ivy (as mentioned above, who else would be interested in Ivy League basketball?). So yeah, gotta side with the writers on this one – reading the comments section here makes me wish I had blown my $150 grand on hookers and a lifetime supply of Spaghetti O’s.

  19. haha Says:

Cornell isn’t even an ivy, the rest of the ivies don’t have to be so insecure.

  20. CU Says:

last time I checked, Cornell was an ivy. It even says so on the damn hompage of this site. Dolt!

  21. Anonymous Says:

    In response to “hangover, usa”:

TOTALLY, MAN!!! I could not agree with you more!! The Ivy League needs way more assholes making random ad hominem attacks, telling people to “shut [their] fucking mouth,” and constantly broadcasting to the entire world how hung over and too-cool-for-school they are!!! What the Ivy League definitely needs to get rid of are those idiots engaging in reasoned, articulate, substantive debate over issues, dood!!!!

  22. hangover, usa Says:

    Dear “Anonymous,”
Though your name could be thought cowardly at best, I will grant you the validation you seek by responding to your comment. You make a very valid point in stating that reasoned, articulate, substantive debates are essential to our beloved Ivy League, though you have overlooked one minor detail. This “reasoned, articulate, substantive debtate” is raging over the ability of a publication (i.e., IvyGateBlog) to write an article on the comments that are left on their own page. Wow, talk about a monumental debate. I suggest you get off your pedestal, take the stick out of your ass and grow up. Thanks.

  23. Jen Says:

lol I love how “hangover, usa” is criticizing “Anonymous” for not revealing his real name.
