INSANE TUG-OF-WAR DISRUPTS VIGILANTE’S SPEECH AT COLUMBIA; Fistfights, Head Kicks Spill Onto Stage; Party Like It’s 1968
Hey, are you hearing that busy signal right now? Cause things at Columbia is off the hook! Some troublemaker invited Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman border vigilante group, to give a talk at the famously protest-happy school and things escalated.
We could make some "I killed a man with a trident" jokes, but we just have to let Bwog take over here. Their reporter was live-blogging the speech, which was exciting even before this happened:
Update 9:00 pm: BWOG IS SHOCKED. STUDENTS WITH A BIG YELLOW SIGN JUST CAME ONTO THE STAGE. The sign says, "There are no illegals." Students rise en masse from the audience and rush the stage. The Minuteman and the students engaged in a tug of war with the banner. More people rush the stage, prompting a fist-fight. One female student is kicked in the head. A guy in a pony tail (definitely not a student) rushes the stage and fights with students (several witnesses saw him kick a student) and then banded together with the Minuteman to shout the pledge of allegiance as the rumble spun out of hand, "One nation! Under God! Indivisible!"
Seriously, just head over to Bwog.net now. There's more -- and more photos -- where that came from, and the comments section is out of control (70 162 417 508 and counting). Watch the video here.

this sort of behavior does not represent columbia today like it may have in 1968. I was out on the street before the actual speech, and most people at that protest were from CUNY, etc. moreover, it’s fairly easy for a tiny minority to capture plenty of media attention by staging a stunt at a high profile event like this, tarring the rest of us. I’m still surprised, at any rate, that columbia hasn’t graduated more warlords, considering these people can’t seem to understand how to properly deal with opinions they disagree with.

i beg to differ. while it is true that there were non-Columbia affiliated protestors outside (as the only people technically allowed inside the event where CU students), there were PLENTY of cu students among those outside.

most were members of the ISO, which is a very fringe organization. the democrats, the largest campus group, have repudiated all involvement.

…cos the democrats are spineless. I’ve never been prouder to associate with this fine crew of committed rabble-rousers, or to call myself a Columbia student.

if it wasn’t for us, Columbians, the Ivy League would be as dull as my @$$. The minutemen were the violent ones and the protestors were the stormers. Hopefully it will be all calmed again next week before the College Republicans bring their next controversial speaker.
